assigner to Beloit Iron Works, Beloit, Wis., a corporation of Wisconsin Application June 14, 1944, Serial No. 540,260
The present invention relates to the placing of a forming wire on a paper making machine, and specically deals with the draping of a forming wire in an open loop in the aisle adjacent the wet end of a Fourdrinier paper machine and the moving of this open loop into the line of the machine around the entire table thereof or around the couch roll only thereof.
It is one of the principal objects of the present invention to simplify the construction of a wire Stringing device for a paper making machine and to improve the emciency, operation and dependability of such wire Stringing device.
Another principal object of this invention is to provide apparatus whereby the Stringing of the wire in a paper making machine may be accomplished entirely from an overhead assembly, suspended from tracks, and adapted to be shifted from the aisle to the line of the machine where the Stringing operation is performed. This arrangement perrnits the wire bundle to be assembled on the suspension means and made ready for Stringing in the aisle before shutting down the machine. Also the aisle at the front side ofthe machine will be clear for access to the machine after the wire has been moved into the line of the machine.
A further object of the invention contemplates the provision of a wire Stringing device having means that will bodily. support or suspend the front end of a couch roll to provide a gap thereunder that is utilized during the Stringing operation for passing an open bight of the wire bundle therethrough to position the bight in encompassing relation to the couch roll. The devices for suspending the couch roll are above the roll at a desirable location between the adjacent edge of the wire loop and the front end of the couchy roll, and during the encompassing of the couchroll the wire loop is adapted to telescope the suspension' devices and pass beyond said devices to a position where the loop v.encompasses the couch roll.
yAnother object is to provide a wire Stringing `struempfethat is adapted to suspend the vtame of a paper machine when its front end supports are displaced to open a gap therebetween through which the wire is passed to its encompassing relation around the table.
Still another object is to provide a wire Stringer upon which the wire is assembled in an aisle, whereby the Stringing operation may be performed upon either of two paper machines having their front sides at opposite Vsides of the aisle.
It is also an object to provide a wire Stringer 23 Claims. (Cl. 592-44) whereon the wire bundle may be completely unwound and opened or extended in a manner that permits the encompassing of the entire table by the wire when the Stringer has been may be readily performed without removal of the forming table from its normally operating position.
It is another object of the invention to prov machine to a position within the confines ofv the main frame'thereof or in the line of the paper machine, and after a gap beneath the front couch roll bearing has been closed the roll is disconnected from its suspension means and the latter is removed from the bundle support.
The invention contemplates providing an overhead crane structure with a removable frame that will Support the table during transfer of the wirekfroman aisle position to a table encompassing position and is then adapted to be dismounted from the crane for removal bodily from the machine. This removable frame is provided with means that permit it to have rolling support upon the'table members after being dismounted.
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a removable beam for supporting a wire bundle with an end portion of the wire disposed in a pendent loop prior to and during the encompassing of the couch roll with the wire loop. This beam is Suspended in a removable manner that allows it to be readily removed longitudinally is preferably of the wheeled dolly type that is ridable on flanges of the bundle supporting device, during the movement of the supporting de vice to position the Wire loop around the table, or couch roll, or both. The dolly is adapted to remain in a xed relation to the table or couch roll to suspend it while the wire loop passes through agap beneath the front end of the table or roll.
moved into A the plane of the line of the paper machine. This Another object of this invention residesln providing an overhead crane structure of such dimensions that it extends at least the length of the table and has provision for unrolling the wire bundle in the aisle and, after a gap has been opened beneath the table, the wire may then be transferred from its aisle position to a position encompassing the table the full length of the latter.
A still further object is to provide a wire stringer that is adapted to suspend the wire in a large open loop supported upon a traveler or crane for readily Stringing the wire upon a cantilever type of Fourdrinier table.
The structure herein contemplated will conserve man power; it materially reduces the time that has heretofore been consumed in the operation of Stringing the forming wire upon the couch roll and table of a paper making machine; it eliminates some of the usual steps heretofore required; and it dispenses with some of the parts of the prior devices.
Additional objects, aims and advantages of the invention contemplated herein will be apparent to persons skilled in the art after the construction and operation of the wire Stringing or band stringing device is understood from the within description.
It is preferred to accomplish the numerous objects of this invention and to practice the same in substantially the manner hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being made to the accompanying drawings that form a part hereof.

The drawings are to be understood as being more or less of a schematic character for the purpose of disclosing a typical or preferred form of the improvements contemplated herein.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures l to 6, the wire Stringer is illustrated for draping the wire around a couch roll I0.
The couch roll I0 has its front end bearing II supported by a demountable block I2 that restslon a pedestal or the longitudinal side-sill I3 of the paper machine, the removal of said block being adapted to open up a gap I4 below the front end bearing of the couch roll that is utilized to pass the wire loop therethrough while Stringing the wire loop upon the couch roll. The opposite end or rear end of the couch roll is supported by a bearing I5 mounted on the other side-sill I3a of the machine, and connections are made with the interior of the roll for sucking the moisture or condensation therefrom that is effected through a pipe or conduit I6.
The support for the wire bundle and for the couch roll front end comprises a horizontal beam I1 that is suspended by bars I8 from a cross rod I9, said bars I8 having hooks 5I at their lower ends that are engaged in holes in the upstanding lugs I'la adjacent the ends of the beam Il. This cross rod I 9 has suitable connections at its end by means of links 20 with pulleys 2| around which the lower bights of cables 22 are reeved, the upper bights of said cables being reeved around pulleys 23 that are rotatably mounted at the ends of a traveling carriage or crane 24. For the purpose of operating the fall ends of cables 22, these ends are attached to and wound upon a rotatable drum 25 that is journaled in the central portion of the carriage or crane 24, and a motor 26 is provided driving said drum 25.
The carriage or crane 24 is provided with a plurality of rollers 21 that are engaged with the bottom flange of a horizontal beam 28 to support the crane in an overhead manner. 'Ihis arrangement permits the crane to travel in longi-l tudinal directions on the beam 28 to move the bundle supporting beam Il in directions that are parallel to the axis of the couch roll I0.
The ends of the horizontal beam 28 are provided with hangers 29 of substantially U-shape that have rollers 30 journaled in their spaced upper ends. Horizontal tracks 3| of I-beam shape are mounted upon the ceiling or other overhead support and the rollers 30 of the hangers 29 travel on the lower flanges of these tracks, thus permitting the crane structure that suspends the bundle support to travel longitudinally with respect to the line of the paper making machine and in a direction transverse to the axis of the couch roll I0. Thus the wire bundle may be conveniently assembled on its support with its pendent loop L in the aisle at therfront end of the couch roll in readiness to encompass the roll before the paper machine is shut down and the old forming wire removed therefrom.
The beam Il is adapted to support the front end of the couch roll in a suspended manner when the block I2 has been removed from beneath the front end bearing II to effect the gap I4 thereunder. The means for suspending the front end of the couch roll comprises a dolly 32 having rollers 33 that ride on the lower ilange of the I-beam I1. The lower portion of the dolly is provided with a shackle bolt 34 to carry a hook 35 that is engageable with an4 eye 36 on the upper segment of the couch roll end bearing II. When the beam I'I and the wire bundle support moves in a. direction axially of and above the couch roll to position the bundle and its open loop in encomanarco passing relation to the couch roll, the dolly 82 will remain in a ilxed or stationary position by riding upon the flange of the beam I1.
The ends of beam I1 are detachably connected by eye-bolts 84 to pole chucks 31 from which the apertured lugs Ila project. These chucks 31 rotatably carry spindles 31a with clamps 31h on their inner ends to clamp the ends of the two spool poles of the wire bundle. .A looped end portion oi the bundle depends upon opposite sides of the beam I1. The pole chucks 31 have laterally disposed horizontal arms 38 projecting from it adjacent the lugs I1a and the ends of these arms 88 have pocket-like seats 39 to receive the ends oi spreader poles 40. These spreader poles 40 are employed to distend the upper portion of the wire loop far enough away from the beam I1 so that the pendent sides of the loop will be in vertical planes far enough apart to escape the iront end bearing II of the couch roll when the wire loop passes through the gap I4 beneath said front bearing of the roll. Other spreader bars or poles di are positioned in the lower portion of the wire loop and are held in spaced relation to each other by horizontal bars 42 that are provided with concave seats 43 at their ends to receive said spreader poles 4I. In this manner a. wire loop is formed that has a rectangular shape such as shown in the diagram in Figure 4, the horizontal dimensions of which are large enough to accommodate the couch roll I and its front bearing Ii when the beam has been moved into the line of the machine and above the couch roll by passing the lower distended portion of the loop through the gap I4.
After encompassing of the couch roll It! with the loop L of the wire, the block I2 is replaced beneath the front end bearing II of the couch roll to close the gap I4, and the pole-chucks 31 and the beam I1 are lowered to permit the dolly .32 to be unhooked and released from the couch roll bearing II and then removed from the beam I1 by riding the dolly off the adjacent end of said beam at the aisle. y
With the couch roll now restored to its initial position, the forming wire is ready to be strung upon the remaining portion of the paper making machine table by moving the crane devices of the yoverhead structure longitudinally of the line of the machine. Prior to doing this, however, the beam I1 is dismantled from its suspension de'- vice`s by detaching the eye-bolts 60 to release the beam from the pole chucks 31 and then moving the beam forwardly in the loop of the wire to allow the beam to pass out of the loop in a direction axially of the couch roll I0. For the purpose of facilitating this removal, the beam I 1 has secured to its rear portion, an inverted V-shaped bracket, the diverging arms 44 of which straddle the beam I1 (Figure 4) and carry obliquely disposed rollers 45 at their lower ends. These rollers are adapted to ride upon the top of the couch 'roll to support the beam until its rear end arrives at the front end of the couch roll where the beam may be readily lifted out of the way.
The arms 38, which support the spreader poles 40 for the purpose of suspending the loop of the wire, are a part of the pole chucks 31 thatcarry the bundle of wire and are therefore not removed with the beam I1. The vertical suspension bars I8 and hooks 5I are replaced by rods I8a having rings Ia at their lower ends to carry diverging links 46 which are engaged in holes 41 in the pole arms 38, in the manner shown in Figure 5.
The wire bundle spool poles have their ends clamped in the chuck block carried spindles 81a and hand -wheels 48 are provided :or rotating the spindles and the' spools to unwind portions of the wire bundle wound on the spools. Small brake bands 48 'engage hub portions ot the hand wheel to prevent unauthorized rotation oi the spool poles and the wire bundle.
Preparatory to starting the wire Stringing operation the carrier is positioned as shown in Fl ure 1 above the aisle with the wire loop L distended and opposite the front end of the couch roll. The dolly is moved along the I-beam until its hook can be engaged with the eye on the front end bearing of the couch roll, and thereupon the hanger cables are operated to elevate the carrier until the end oi the roll is supported suiciently to permit displacement of the removable block. The carrier assembly together with the pendent opened wire loop is moved in a direction longitudinally of the couch roll until the position shown in Figure 2 is reached, thus encompassing the couch roll with the wire loop. The block is then replaced under the front bearing of the couch roll and the hanger cables are operated to lower the beam Il and restore the front bearing of the couch roll to its original or normal position so that the dolly may be unhooked from the bearing. The beam is then uncoupled from the chuck blocks so that it can be lowered until the rollers rest upon the top of the couch roll upon which the end is supported during the withdrawal oi the beam out of the loop. A pole basket 52 (shown in Figure 6) is attached to the bottoms of the chuck blocks 31 with a plurality of poles 53 therein and the spreader bars 4I with their 4brackets 4'2 are removed from the looped wire. The stringer device may then be moved longitudinally of the machine to string the wire as shown in Figure 6 while temporarily Stringing the upper bight of the wire upon poles 53 that have been removed from. the basket 52 and suspended on hangers 54.
The wire stringers shown in Figures 7 to 10 embody structures for supporting the wire in an elongated loop that is approximately the length of the forming table and, after the gap has been opened up beneath the front end of the table, this elongated wire loop is moved from an aisle position to a position in the line of the paper making machine to encompass the table. In these structures the front end of the forming table is supported during the Stringing operation in one instance by the wire Stringing assembly and in the other instance by a cantilever arrangement at the rear end support. In both types the wire is assembled in an elongated loop in the aisle at the front end of the forming table while the machine is in operation, thus eliminating a considerable loss of time in shutting down the' machine during the wire Stringing operation.
The forming table shown in Figures i and 8 comprises front and rear sills 6I and 62 respectively that extend longitudinally of the machine and support a plurality of table rolls 63 and the suction boxes 64. The breast roll 65 at the receiving end of the table is of the displaceable type that is fulcrumed upon a pivot 66 and has supporting arms 61 connecting it to the pivot to adapt the breast roll 65 for swing movement in a downward direction in the manner shown in dotted lines in Figure 8. The suction couch roll 68 at the other or delivery end of the table is mounted for rotation in fixed relation to the table sills 6I and 62, and it has a front end bearing support 89 that is displaced to open up a gap between the couch roll and its pedestal 10. The
` e. plurality of pedestals 1| that are bodily removable, as shown in Figure '7, to open up a gap beneath the table at its front end. The wire when operating upon this table is held taut by a tension roller 12 journaled. in bearings at the ends of a cross piece T3 that is connected by parallel links 14 having their ends pivotally connected to said cross piece and to brackets l5 depending from the under side of the table. This arrangement i permits the tension roller to be shifted from the full line position in Figure 8 to the dotted line position thereon during the Stringing operation.
The wire stringer assembly shown in Figures 7 and 8 comprises elongated side sills 16 that are spaced apart approximately the width of the forming table and are connected by a pair of converging bars 'l1 to eyes 18 at the lower ends of links 'i9 depending from an overhead crane structure such as shown in detail in Figures 1 and 2. The ends of the side sills T6 have oblique portions 80 and 8|, respectively, that incline downwardly in opposite directions away from each other toward the respective ends of the table. Extension that are secured to the inclined ends 80 ofthe side sills 1'6. Extension bars such as 83 are secured to the oblique ends 8| of the sills and have downwardly curved lower portions that extend around the ends of couch roll 68 and in spaced relation thereto. Clamps 84, 8l of U-shape are mounted on the bars 82 in the manner shown in Figure 8 to receive the loop-forming poles 85. Similar U-shaped clamps 86, 86 are secured to the curved bars 83 to support other loop-forming poles 8T, 81. The side sills 16, 16 are preferably of angular cross section, preferably of the channel type and between their ilanges these side sills have seats 88, 88 to receive poles 89, 89 that extend between the respective side sills 16.
The wire bundle has its spool poles clamped to spindles 90 rotatably carried by the intermediate portions of each of the side sills 16, 16. spindles 90 have hand wheels 9|, 9| to unwind the wire upon the carrier while the latter is above the aisle at the front end of the paper making machine forming table. The wire as shown in dotted lines in Figure 8 is trained upon the poles 89, 85 and 8l in the form of an open loop suiciently elongated to encompass the table g and couch roll when the breast roll is dropped to its foreshortened position. This elongated loop of the wire is maintained against slipping on the poles and its bights are kept taut in the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 8 by brake members 92 that operate upon the hubs of the hand Wheels 9|.
The means for supporting the front side of the table, to 'establish and maintain a gap beneath the table and couch roll,.comprises a demountable structure that is carried by the side sills 16. This demountable structure comprises spaced I- beams 93, 93 that are secured to the under portions of the lower flanges of the side sills in the manner shown in Figure 8 by means of eye- bolts 94, 94. The ends of these I-beams 98 are connected to transverse I- beams 95, 95, the lower anges of which provide tracks for traveling doilies 96, 96. The upper portions of these doilies 96 are of yoke shape for mounting confronting tapered rollers 91, and the lower ends of these doilies are provided with clevis hooks 98, 98 to engage in eyes 99, 99 on the upper surface of the front end members 6| of the forming table. When the hooks 98 have been engaged in the manner described` the front end of the table may be lifted bars 82, 82 have curved upper portions by operating the winding drum 26 on the crane The` structure to thereby lift the front end member 8| of the table for the removal of the pedestals 7| and the end bearing block 69 for the couch roll, thus providing a gap at the front end of the forming table.
After the loop has been made with the wire above the aisle at the front end of the forming table and the hooks 98 have been engaged with the eyes 99 on the forming table front member 6|, the paper making machine is stopped and the gap beneath the front end of the table and the couch roll is then opened up and the breast roll is dropped to its lowered position (dotted lines in Figure 8). The loop assembly is then moved from its aisle position as shown in Figure 7 across the table until the wire loop has encompassed the table. The pedestals 1| and the front 99 and the doilies 96 are removed from the tracks 95.
The I-beam tracks 95, together with the beams 93, are now removed by loosening and turning down the eye bolts 94 permitting removal of these parts from the side sills 'i6 of the Stringer. To facilitate removal of this portion of the wire Stringer the beams 93 have brackets |00, |00 depending from their lower flanges that have rollers |0|, |0| journaled in their lower ends. This arrangement permits the rollers |0| to ride on the top of the table while the beams 93 and 95 4are being removed through the Wire loop.
It will be understood that during the Stringing operation the doilies will remain in xed relation to the front end of the forming table with their rollers 91 riding on the lower anges of the encompassing position in the line of the paper making machine.
Figures 9 and 10 disclose the manner ofusing a Wire Stringer such as contemplated herein on a. cantilever type of forming table in a Fourdrinier paper making machine. As shown in Figure 9 there is an aisle A between the front sides of longitudinally extending paper making machines, designated generally as B and C, and the front ends of the forming tables are supported by removable pedestals such as lla. The'rear portions of the table are supported on pedestals 1lb and extend past the same a suitable distance where the table portions are engaged by upstanding bars |02 having nuts |03 screwed upon their threaded upper ends. By tightening these nuts |03 the forming table will be cantilevered upon the rear side pedestals 1lb as fulcrums so that the front pedestals 1| a may be removed to open a gap under the table. The wire Stringer is assembled in the aisle A between the front sides of the respective tables andthe overhead crane structure is so arranged that the Stringer may be used upon either the table B or the table C, depending on which table the wire is to be strung. In the present instance the left-hand table B is ready to be strung with the wire. Other portions of the forming table shown in Figure 10 are identical with those shown in Figure 8 and therefore, in the interest of simplicity, the corresponding are applied to the parts in Figure 10 that are common to parts in Figure 8.
by means of doliies and the underframingthat is detachably mounted upon the side sills of the "Stringer shown in Figure 8.` The wire stringer 'shown in Figure 10 is supported by cable links f`11a that are attached at their upper ends to the "overhead traveling crane structure for permitting the shifting of the wire stringer across the table to encompass the wire around the table member. 'The endsof the side sills 16a. have downwardly 'extending bars 82a. and 83a, and poles 85a. are .-carried on the bars 82a by means of the U-shaped clamp 84a. Similarly, poles 81a are secured to the bars 83a by U-shaped clamp members 86e. Seats 88a are provided upon the facing inner 'portions of the side sills 16a to receive the pole 4'89e wire bundle are clamped to the spindles 90a for vrotation by the hand wheels Sla that are braked by bands 92a. In this construction and arrange- 'ment the wire is trained upon the poles 85a, 81a and 89a in the manner shown in dotted lines in 'Figure 10, such arrangement being the same as the arrangement shown in Figure 8. The assembly of the wire in a loop upon the stringer device is made in the aisle prior to shutting down the machine. After the machine has stopped the 'iront end of the forming table is cantilevered upwardly to remove the pedestals 1| and couch roll bearing support 69 at its front ends to open the Egap and permit passageof the lower run of the loop of wire through said gap forencompassing the forming table.
" From the above descriptions it will be understood thatthe invention provides apparatus for rapidly placing a forming wire on a Fourdrinler machine without damaging the wire since the wire is not dragged over any supports even though the paper machine does not have a laterally movable table.
I claim as my invention: 1. In combination, a paper making machine of the Fourdrlnier type having a couch roll with a removable front bearing support for opening up -a gap facilitating passage or a forming wire, a movable wire bundle carrier, .means suspending said carrier above the couch roll for movement longitudinally and laterally of the machine,
