This invention relates to'apparatus for stringing a new Fourdrinier wire in an open loop in the aisle adjacent the removable table structure of a Fourdrinier paper making machine to receive the table structure therein'and includes mechanism attachable to the table structure for carrying the new wire over a cantilever type couch roll. More specifically the invention relates to a trolley or carriage for unreeling a Fourdrinier wire bundle into an open loop in the aisle adjacent the Fourdrinier paper making machine.
Fourdrinier wires are shipped in bundles formed by inserting a pole within the loop of the wire and by wrapping the wire double around another pole outside of the loop and the inside pole. The free end of the wire then receives another pole within the loop thereof.
The first pole will be hereinafter called the inside wire spool pole while the other pole around which the wire is wrapped .will be identified as the outside wire spool pole. The pole inserted through the free end of the wire will be referred to as the inside wire free end pole.
According to this invention a pair of spaced vertical posts are disposed in the aisle alongside of a paper making machine at each end of the removable table structure of the machine. These posts have upper and lower pole receiving brackets. A carriage or trolley is movable in the aisle between the pairs of posts and has revolvable clamps thereon for receiving the spool poles of a Fourdrinier wire bundle. The-carriagealso has overhead supports for receiving the ends of the free end pole of the Fourdrinier bundle. Re-
ceptacles are provided on the carriage for rece iv ing additional intermediate poles inserted in the loop of the wire mounted on the carriage between the spool poles and the free end pole.
In unreeling the wire bundle from the carriage to form an open loop of the Fourdrinier wire in the aisle alongside of the paper making machine, the free end pole of the wire bundle is transferred from the overhead carriage brackets to brackets on the upper ends of the pair of posts in the aisle adjacent the breast roll end of the machine. One of the intermediate poles on the carriage within the loop of the wire is transferred to brackets carried at the lower ends of the posts.
The carriage is then moved along the aisle toward the other pair of posts at the couch roll end of the machine. During such movement of the carriage, the spool poles are rotated around each other while carried in the. revolvable clamps 55 a I fbe of the carriage to unreei the wire. Other inter- I mediate poles on the carriage within'the loop of the wire are then transferred to overhead supports at spaced intervals above the aisle for suppbrting the'upper run of the wire loop. The carriage may. also carry additional poles outside of the loop of the wire for placing, on the aisle floor to support the lower run of the wire loop.
When the carriage reaches the pair of posts at the couch roll end of the machine, the inside wire p'olepf the, spool poles is transferred from the revolvable clamps on the carriage to the upper brackets carried by the posts. An intermediate pole on the carriage within the loop of wire is transferred to the lower'brackets of the posts. The wire is thus disposed in 'an open loop in the aisle adjacent the table structure of the machine.
The table structure is next laterally removed into the open loop oi the wire according to known clamps for receiving wish-bone members therein,
The wire poles on the posts adjacent the couch roll are then transferred from the posts to the wish-bones. moved back into position in the line of the mae chine,v the wish-bones carry the wire over the couch roll. The poles and wish-bones can then removed from the machine and the wire will be disposed in operative position around the couch'roll.
The table roll frame structure preferably carries the breast roll in pivotal relation thereto so that the same can be moved toward the couch roll end of the machine for readily fitting within the removable table structur the openloop of the wireformed in the aisle. When the poles at the couch roll end of the wire loop have been transferred to the wish-bones the breast roll can be moved away from the "couch roll end of the machine by rotation about its pivot point to tighten the wire on the table roll-structure. Of course, other tensioningmeans can also be used to tighten the wire,
It is then, an object of this invention to provide a carriage for unreeling a Fourdrinier wire bundle into an open wire loop adapted to receive machine therein.
A further object of this invention is to provide carriage for facilitating the stringing of a- When the table structure'is then of a paper making I Fourdrinier wire into an open loop in the aisle alongside of a paper making machine.
Another object of this invention is to provide supports for attachment to the couch roll end of a removable paper. machine table structure for mounting a new Fourdrinier wire around a cantilever type couch roll.
Another object of this invention is to provide wish-bones adapted to be attached to the frame structure of a removable type Fourdrinier machine for receiving poles within the loop of a Fourdrinier wire to dispose the Fourdrinier wire around a couch roll.
Another object of this invention is to provide a process of replacing Fourdrinier wires on paper making machines having removable table structures.
A further object of this invention is to provide a mechanism in the aisle between two Fourdrinier paper making machines for replacing the Fourdrinier wire on either machine.

The carriage H consists of side frame members l2 joined together by transverse tubes l3. The tubes l3 are held in the frame members l2 by means of bolts such as 14.
The shanks l5 of casters l6 are swivelly mounted through the ends of the tubes l3 in eachframe member [2, thereby providing four swivelly mounted caster wheels l6 for the carriage.
.The casters 16 have gears l'l secured around the shanks thereof meshing with worms secured on shafts 18 mounted under each frame 12 in brackets l9 and 20. Cranks 2| are secured on the front ends of the shafts l8 for manual rotation of the shafts to turn the casters and thus steer the carriage.
The-frames l2 have upwardly extending pedestal portions 22 at the front end of the carriage. Bearing housings 23 are bolted on top of the pedestals 22 and the shafts 24 of clamp members 25 are rotatively mounted on bearings (not shown) in the bearing housings 23.
The ends of the clamp members 25 are grooved as at 26 (Fig. 3) for receiving therein the shanks of bolts 21 pivotally mounted on the ends of yoke members 28 cooperating with the clamp members 25. Nuts 21a can be threaded on the ends of the bolts 21 for drawing the yokes 28 towards the members 25.
The members 25 and 28 are thus revolvable in the bearing housings 23.
As best shown in Figures 3 and 3A, the bearing housings 23 are provided with inwardly extending lips 23a for supporting brake bands such as 30 disposed around the shafts 24 of the members 25.
As shown in Figure 3A one end of the brake band 30 is secured to a bracket 3| extending through the lip 23a. and held in fixed position thereon by means of nuts 32 engaging the opposite faces of the lip.
The other end of the brake band 30 is secured to a bracket 33 having a threaded shank portion 34 extending through the lip 23a and receiving in threaded relation thereon a thumb nut 35 adapted to abut the top face of th lip 23a. Manipulationof the .nut 35 thus controls the frictional engagement between the brake band As shown in Figure 3, a brake 30 is provided for each shaft 24.
As best shown in Figure 2, the bundle H) is mounted on the carriage H by placing the ends of the spool poles B and C on the clamp members 25.. These members can be held in. horizontal position for receiving the wire poles by tightening the brake bands 30. The yoke members '28 are then secured on the members 25 to clamp the spool poles in position.
When the bundle ID has thus been assembled on the carriage I I, the free end pole A may be moved down to a support such.as 36 formed on the frame members I2behind the pedestals 22.
Vertical posts 31 and 38 are mounted on the A bracket 40 is clamped on the post 31 in spaced relation from the top thereof. The bracket 40 has an inwardly and downwardly extending arm portion 4| and an outwardly and upwardly extending arm portion 42 as best shown in Figure 3. Concave guide rollers 43 and M are rotatively carried on the ends of the arms 4! and 42 respectively around axle pins 45-projecting horizontally from the arms toward the rear of the carriage. The arrangement of the arms is such to mount the rollers for receiving a pole therebetween and for holding the pole transversely across the carriage in a cantilevered position. However, the free end of the pole can be tilted upward for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully dwcribed.
Pins or posts such as 46 are mounted on the frames l2 in spaced parallel relation behind the posts 31 and 38 to define with the posts 31 and 38 a pole receptacle 41.
A second set of pins or posts 68 are mounted on the back ends of the frames l2 to define with the posts 46 a second pole receptacle 49.
Brackets such as 50 are mounted under the frames l2 forsupporting wire poles for a purpose to be hereinafter described..
A tray is mounted on the front tube l3 in the central portion of the carriage. The tray 5| supports wire pole blocks 52 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
Incharging the carriage for unreeling a Fourdrinier wire bundle into an open loop, the wire bundle is mounted on the clamps 25 as explained above. Wire pole A is then moved from the support 36 to the brackets 39 at the top of the posts 3'! and 38. During this positioning of the wire pole A, the wire F. W. is unreeled from the spool poles B and C to form an open loop between the clamps 25 and the pole A as best shown in Figure 2. Wire poles D, E and F are then inserted table structure of a Fourdrinier paper making a machine.
As best shown in Figure 4, the reference numeral 60 designates an aisle extending longitudinally between two spaced parallel Fourdrinier paper making machines havingbase plates SI and B2.
A pair of spaced vertical posts 63 are remov ably mounted in the floor of the aisle 60 by any suitable anchoring. The posts 63 are adjacent aisle 60 in the positions indicated in d ited lines.
A similar set of posts 66 is provided in the aisle 60 adjacent the 'breast roll end of the paper making machine as best shown in Figures 7 and a. g
The posts. 86 have lower pole receiving brackets 61 near the bottoms thereof and upper pole receiving brackets 68 at the tops thereof. The brackets 61 and 6!! face the couch roll end of the machine.
.With the carriage II charged as shown in Figures 2, 3 and 7, the same is moved along the the couch roll end of the removable Fourdrinier table roll structure and are spaced apart from each other for a distancesufiicient to receive the carriage l'l therebetween.
The posts 63 carry, near the bottoms thereof,
double pole receiving brackets 54 (best shown in the base plate 62 is to be supplied with a new Fourdrinier wire, the posts are mounted in the aisle 60 between the posts 66 As shown. in Figure 7, the wire pole A is then transferred from the brackets 39 on the carriage posts Hand 38 into the brackets 68 on the aisle Thenext roll E in the receptacle Q9 of the car-' riage is removed from the receptacle and slid between the rollers Q3 and M on the carriage post 47 to hold the pole in a cantilever position].
The free endof the pole is then tilted upwardly to engage a cable It suspended from the ceiling. The other end of the pole is then removed from the rollers 43and M and mounted in a complementary cable H (Fig. 4) to suspend the pole horizontally from the ceiling and hold the upper run of the wire F. W. in a substantially horizontal position level with the brackets 68 of the posts 66.
A pair of pole blocks 52 are then removed from the tray ti on the carriage and are mounted on the aisle floor. The ,pole K is then removed from the brackets 50 on the carriage and mounted on the pole blocks 52 to hold the lower run of the wire F. W. above the aisle floor.
In a similar manner, theintermediate. poles F and G are removed from the carriage and suspended from overhead cables to hold the upper run of the wire F. W. Likewise, the poles L and M are removed from the carriage and mounted on pole blocks on the aisle floor under theunder .run of the wire to hold the wire above the floor.
The carriage is then moved between the aisle posts 63 and the remaining poles H and J on the carriage are mounted in the double lower post brackets 64 for mounting the two poles in parallel relation.
The inside wire spool pole B is, then transferred from the clamps 25 on the carriage to the upper brackets 55 of the aisle posts 63. The
outside wire spool pole C is transferred to the supports 36 on the carriage. I
The wire F. W. is thus disposed in an open loop in the aisle adjacent the removable taa Fourdrinier'paper making mamaking machines to position .the rollers E, F,
and G as shown in dotted lines in Figure 7 for tightening the loop. I
The removable table structure of a paper making machine is next moved into the loop thus formed. As best shownln Figure 9, this removable table structure comprises side frame members such as 88 supporting table rolls 8|, suction boxes 82 and a guide roll 83 at the couch roll end thereof. A breast roll 84 is pivoted on arms such as 85 to the other end of the frames 80. When the table structure is moved into the loop of the wire in the aisle alongside of the machine, the breast roll is dropped as shown-in Figure 8 to be closer to the couch roll end of the structure. The frames 80 also carry along the underside thereof, a plurality of wire carrying rolls 86 and tensioning rolls 8! for the under run Fourdrinier wire F. W.
A cantilever type couch roll 88 is mounted in the line of the paper machine adjacent the end of the frames 80. This couch roll is not laterally removable with the table structure, but as is customary with cantilever type couch rolls, the front bearing support for the roll can be removed to permit the positioning of a new Fourdrinier wire therearound.
According to this invention, the couch roll end of the front frame 80, as best shown in Figure 5, has a longitudinally extending metal bracket 89 secured thereon. The end of this bracket defines a vertical tubular housing 90 open at the top and bottom thereof. The housing 90 is formed in complementary sections and includes a cover 9| pivoted on the bracket 89. The cover 9| can be bolted by means of a bolt 92, to the non-movable section of the housing to, close the housing.
The non-movable section of the housing 90 on the bracket 89 whichis secured on the front frame member 80 has a single horizontal pin93 extending from the center thereof.
When the table structure is moved into the loop of the forming wire in the aisle alongside of the machine as shown in Figure 8, a single wish-bone member 98, as shown in Figure 6, is, mounted in the housing 90 carried by the front frame member 89 of the machine. This wishbonemember. has a hole therethrough to receive the pin 93 therein. for holding the member against rotation in the housing.
The upper arm of the wish-bone member 99 has a pole-receiving bracket 99 on the end thereof. The lower arm of the wish-bone member 98 has a pole-receiving bracket I99 on the end thereof.
As best shown in Figure 6, the rear frame member 80a of the machine has a longitudinally extending metal bracket 89a secured thereon. The end of;this bracket 89a defines a vertical tubular housing 980 open at the top and bottom thereof and this housing 98a is formed in complementary sections and includes a cover em pivoted on the bracket 89a. The non-movable section of the housing 99ahas two horizontal pins 99 and 95 extending therefrom. When the table structure is moved into the loop of the forming wire in the aisle alongside of the machine as shown in Figure 8, two fragmental wish-bone members 96 and 91 are secured in the housing 900. on the rear frame member 80a.
These wish-bone members 96 and 9i have holes therein to, receive the pins 94 and 95 for holding the members against rotation in the hous- The outer end of the wish-bone member 96 has a bracket 99a thereon similar to the bracket 99. Likewise, the outer end of the wish-bone member 91 has a bracket [a thereon similar to the bracket 10.
The wish-bone members '96, 91 and 98 are applied to the frames a and 89 after the latter are moved into the aisle of the machine.
The wish-bone segment 91 and the lower portion of the wish-bone 98 also have pole receiving brackets Hlla and [Ill respectively thereon below 'the housings a and 90 and.facing the frames 80a and 80.
When the wish-bones have been placed on the frames 80 and 80a, the pole H is removed from.
the brackets 84 on the posts 83 and is seated in the brackets HH and Iflla. of the wish-bones as shown 8. The pole J is then transferred from the brackets 64 of the posts 63 to the brackets I00 and Mia of the wish-bones as shown in Figure 8. The spool pole B is next transferred from-the brackets 65 of the post 63 to the brackets 99 and 99a of the wish-bones.
In order to have suflicient slack in the wire F. W. enabling the frame to be mounted on the wish-bone, it may be necessary to lower the top 7 poles E, F and G from the ceiling.
After the poles B, H and J have been assembled on the wish-bones the poles A, D, E, F and G may be withdrawn from the loop of the wire allowing the wire to be deposited around the breast roll 84 and over the table rolls and suction boxes. The slack of the wire is then taken up by raising the poles K, L and M on the aisle floor into brackets I02 carried under the frames 80 and 80a. This holds the under run of the wire against the wire rolls 86 of the table roll structure and also supports the under run of the wire in spaced relation from the floor.
The wire F. W. is thus disposed around the table structure as shown in solid lines in Figure 8 and the table structure is now adapted to be moved back into the line of the machine with the new wire therearound. The wish-bones will carry the wire in spaced relation around the couch roll 88 as the table structure is moved back into position.
The poles B, J and H are then removed from the wish-bones allowing the wire to be deposited around the. couch roll 88, the wish-bones are removed from the housings 90 and 90a of the segments 96 and 91 to facilitate removal from the frapne 80a around the rear stationary mounting for the couch-roll after the table structure has been moved into position in the line of the machine. The front wish-bone member can be in one piece since it is readily removed from the front frame 80 because the front supports for the couch roll are removed.
From the above description it should be understood that this invention provides for the unreeling of a Fourdrinier wire from a bundle into an open loop in the aisle alongside of a paper making machine. The table structure of the paper making machine is then moved into 'the open loop of the wire. Devices are applied to the table structure of the machine for carrying the wire over a cantilever type couch roll in the line of the paper making machine as the table structure is moved back into position with the new wire thereon. The apparatus of this invention provides for the replacing of a new Fourdrinier wire on Fourdrinier paper making machines having removable table structures without damaging the wire and without requiring skilled technicians to effect the wire change.
- We are aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this im .ition, and we, therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
We claim as our invention:
1. In combination with a paper making machine having a laterally removable table structure and a cantilever type couch roll, means for stringing a Fourdrinier wire into an open loop adjacent the table structure for receiving said structure therein, wish-bone members attachable to the couch roll end of the table structure, pole brackets at the ends of said wish-bone members for receiving wire poles supporting the wire in an open loop whereby the table structure can be run into the open loop of the Fourdrinier wire, the wish-bone members attached to the table structure, the wire poles supporting the couch roll end of thewire transferred-to the wish-bones, and the table structure with the wire thereon moved back into the line of the machine with the wish-bone members holding the wire in spaced relation around the couch roll. 2. In a Fourdrinier paper making machine having a removable table structure, a cantilever type couch roll and a breast roll adapted to be moved toward the couch roll end of the table structure, means supporting a forming wire in an open loop in the aisle adjacent-the table structure, said open loop being adapted to receive the tablestructure therein, members attachable to the couch roll end of the table structure for receiving part of said means to hold the wire for passage over the couchroll when the table structure is moved back into the line of machine.
3. In a removable type table structure for Fourdrinier paper making machines which have a non-removable roll at an end of the table structure, brackets secured to theroll endof the main frame of said table structure, and
U-shaped members attachable to said brackets for holding a looped forming wire in extended relation beyond and around said roll of the machine.
4. In combination with the main side frames of a removable type table structure, brackets secured to the ends of said frames having open ended vertical housings thereon, U-shaped members adapted to be secured in said housings, and pole receiving supports on the ends of said U- shaped members.
5. In a removable table structure for Fourdrinier type paper making machines, a pair of main side frames, vertical housings open at the top and bottom secured to the couch roll ends of said frames, and wish-bone members detachably secured in said housings.
6. The method of stringing a Fourdrinier wire on a Fourdrinier type paper making machine having a removable table structure and a non.- removable roll at an end of the table structure which comprises forming an open loop of the wire in an aisle adjacc nt the paper making machine, moving the table structure of the machine into said open loop, attaching arms to that end of the table structure which is adjacent the nonremovable roll for extending beyond said end both above and below the roll-and supporting the roll end of the wire loop on said arms for movement back into the line of the machine around the roll.
7. The method of mounting a Fourdrinier wire on a Fourdrinier type paper making machine, which comprises forming the Fourdrinier wire bundle into an open loop in the aisle adjacent the paper making machine, moving the table structure of the machine into the open loop, attaching supporting means to the couchvroll end of the table structure for holding the couch roll end of the loop in extended relation beyond the end of the table structure and moving the table structure with the wire therearound back into the line of themachine whereby 'the extended couch roll end of the wire is adapted to fit around the couch roll of the machine without rubbing against the couch roll.
8. The method of stringing a Fourdrinier wire on a Fourdrinier type paper making machine having a removable table structure which comprises rotatably supporting the ends of the inside and outside wire spool poles of a Fourdrinier wire bundle, mounting the end of the inside pole at the free end of the bundle in a stationary support in the aisle adjacent the couch roll end of the table structure of the machine, moving the rotatably supported inside and outside wire spool poles away from the inside pole at the free end of the bundle to unreel the wire from the bundle,
suspending the unreeled wire in the form ofanthe open loop, attaching supporting means to the couch roll end of the table structure for holding the couch roll end of the loop in extended relation beyond the end of the table structure, and
moving the table structurewith the wire therearound back in the line of the machine whereby the extended 'couch roll end of the wire is adapted to fit over the couch roll end of the machine'without rubbing against the couch roll.
9. In a Fourdrinier paper making machine having a removable table structure and anonremovable roll adjacent an end of the table structure, the improvement which comprises apparatus forsupportlng a looped forming wire on the table structure extended beyond the roll including arms detachably mounted on the roll end of the table structure at the front and rear sides thereof, said arms being shaped for clearing the roll and having portions disposed above and be- Fourdrinier paper making machine, a housing defining an open ended vertical tubular chamber mounted at the couch roll end of the table structure, said housing including a pair of complementary longitudinal half sections, one of said sections being movably mounted to open the chamber throughout its length, a pin carried by said housing and projecting transversely into the chamber, a U-shaped member having pole receiving brackets on the free ends thereof and'a pin receiving recess intermediate the ends thereof, a localized portion of said U-shaped member adjacent saldrecess adapted to be seated in said housing chamber with the pin in the chamber Fourdrinier paper making machines, the improvements which comprise housings on the front and rear sides of said table structure at the couch roll end thereof defining open ended vertical tubular chambers, each of said housings including a pair of complementary longitudinal half sections with one of the said sections being movably mounted to open the chamber throughout its length, said housing at the rear side of said table structure having a pair of longitudinally spaced pins projecting transversely into the chamber, said housing at the front side of said table structure having a pin projecting transversely into the chamber, a pair of arms having inner ends detachably mounted in said housing on the rear side of the table structure, said ends of the arms having recesses therein receiving said pins to hold the arms against movement in the chamber, said pairs of arms extending longitudinally beyond the end of the table structure and having pole supporting brackets at their rear ends, a U-shaped member having pole receiving brackets on the free ends thereof and a pin receiving recess intermediate the ends thereof detachably mounted in the housing on the front side of the table structure with the pin in said housing projecting in said recess to hold the U-shaped member against movement in the chamber, and means for locking the movable housing sections in closed position to retain the arms and the U-shaped member on the table structure with the brackets thereof disposed longitudinally beyond the couch roll end of the table structure.
