This invention relates to improvements in apparel collars and more particularly to improvements in the collars provided with stifiening means as described in my Patent No. 2,270,065 issued on January 13, 1942.

In my aforementioned Patent No. 2,270,065, I disclosed a collar either of the detachable type or of the type which is attached to the shirt, said collars having pockets formed therein adapted to receive and hold stiffening members, said pockets forming an angle with the vertical edges of said collar and the open end thereof terminating at a point below the fold line of said collar.

It has been found that in the construction outlined in said Patent No. 2,270,065, in some cases there was a tendency for the top of the collar to break down at its front. This was particularly the case when the collar was starched.

The main object of the present invention is to provide an improved collar of the type disclosed in my prior Patent No. 2,270,065, in which the beforementioned break-down is eliminated.

Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following specification and the appended drawings which show, by way of example, a preferred embodiment of the invention and in which Fig. 1 is a rear view of a shirt in open position, partially broken away, showing my improved collar in turned up position and partially broken away.

Fig. 5 illustrates a collar edge lining ply used in carrying out the present invention.

Referring to the drawing, B designates the body of a shirt having attached thereto in the usual manner a collar C. The collar C consists of a band or inner fold 2 and the top or outer fold 3, the said inner fold or band 2 being provided with the usual buttonhole I and button 4 at the free ends thereof.

In the collar disclosed in my prior Patent No. 2,270,065, the outer fold 3 consists of a front ply 5, a rear ply 6, a lining l and intermediate plies B. The front and rear plies 5 and 6 and the lining 1 are formed of pieces of fabric of substantially the same size and shape. The top of rear ply 6 at each side thereof is bent inwardly to form the hems 0. Positioned between the lining l and rear ply ii and at the outer ends of the outer fold 3, are the intermediate plies 8, each of said plies extending substantially one quarter the length of the fold. The plies and the lining are sewn together along their lower and side edges by stitching l0 and the upper edge of said outer fold is sewn together and connected to the top of the inner fold by the row of stitches H. The row of stitches ll only passes through the middle of the top of rear ply member 6. Running from the corners of the outer fold 3 and at an angle to the vertical edges E2 of said fold are the two pair of parallel stitches l3 joining the rear ply 6 and the intermediate plies 8, thus forming the diagonal pockets I4. Positioned in said pockets I l are the resilient stiffening members it which run the entire length of the pocket, the lower ends of said members being shaped so as to coincide with the lower edge of the outer fold. These stiffening members l5 may be made of any suitable material such as Celluloid, etc. The intermediate plies 8 terminate at about the point where the row of stitches ll engages the rear ply 6.

The above mentioned break-down came about because the underply of the collar is folded on an angle at either end. This causes a triangular area at the top front of the collar, in which there is one less ply than in the rest of the collar. According to my present invention, this thinness is compensated by stitching into the collar a small triangular piece or breaker strip of a suitable textile fabric which covers this thin area and overlaps the edge, for example Said triangular piece 2| is shown in Fig. 5. It preferably consists of the same material as the collar lining, and may be attached at the same time as the stay pocket by means of doubleneedle stitching. It is also possible to attach the triangle by a row of stitching along its top and it may also be attached by means of the closing stitch along its front edge, 1. e. the stitch which comes down one end of the collar and along the bottom and up the other end before the collar is turned. It has been found that by stitching into the collar breaker strip 2|, as shown in Figures 1-4, the break-down is safely eliminated even if the collar was subjected to heavy starching.

It will be apparent from the above description and the drawings that my invention is not limited to the specific details described above and illustrated in the drawings, and numerous alterations and omissions may be made without departing from the spirit thereof.

What is claimed is:

1. A collar of the character described comprising a band portion and a front fold, said front fold being formed by a front-ply, a lining adjacent said front ply and of the same shape as said front ply, a rear ply of substantially the same shape as the front ply but having the side top parts thereof folding inwardly forming a hem which makes an angle with *the top edge of the front ply, a pair of intermediate plies positioned between the lining and the rear ply, adjacent said rear ply, at theouterends of said outer fold, each of said intermediate plies being about one quarter the length of the outer fold, a pair of intermediate triangular breaker strips positioned between said intermediate plies and the lining, and extending over the thinner portion, resulting from said inwardly folding of the rear ply, of the front fold, the lower and side edges of said plies and lining and'the side-edges of the triangular breaker strips being stitched together and a row of stitches passing through the top edges of the band, the'lining, the front and intermediate plies, the triangular breaker strips and the central part .of the top edge of the rear ply, a pair of parallel rows of stitches between the rear and intermediate plies, said rows of stitches terminating .close to the :lower corners of the outer fold and forming .apairrof pockets adapted to receive stiffening :members.

A collar of the character described comprising a band portion and an outer fold portion, said outer fold portion comprising-a-front ply, a rear ply, an intermediate ply and-anintermediate triangular'breaker strip, the lower and side edges of said plies and :said breaker strip being stitched together, a row of stitches passing through the band, the front and intermediate plies and the central part of the top edge of the rear ply to leave free the upper end portions of the rear ply, a pair of parallel rows of stitches between the rear and intermediate plies adjacent each end of the outer fold portion, said rows of stitches terminating close to the lower corners of the outer fold and forming a, pair of pockets adapted to receive stiffening members.

3. A collar of the character described comprising a band portion and an outer fold portion, said outer fold comprising 'a front ply, a rear ply and a pair of intermediate plies positioned between the front and rear plies, adjacent said rear plies, at the outer ends of said outer fold,

each of said intermediate plies extending substantially less than half of the length of the outer fold, a pair of intermediate triangular breaker strips positioned between the front and rear plies, the lower and outer side edges of said -p1ies and breaker strips being stitched together and a row of stitches passing through the band, the "front and intermediate plies and the central part of the top edge of the rear ply to leave free the v.upperend portions of :the rear ply, and rows :of stitches in the end portions ofrthe outer fold through the rear and intermediate plies forming pockets to receive .a stiffening 'member.

4. A collar as claimed in claim .3, .in which theparallel rows of stitches ,in the end portions of the'outer fold are disposed at an'angle to the side edges of the outer fold, the pockets formed by .said parallel rows of stitches being disposed at an angle to the adjacent side edgeofsaid uter fold.
