1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to electric fences and particularly to fence posts therefor.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved simple and inexpensive fence post specially designed to facilitat the erection, maintenance and removal of electric fences and to expedite the transfer of such fences from one grazing area to another.
Other more specific objects and advantages will appear, expressed or implied from the following description of an illustrative embodiment of the present invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of an electric fence including fence posts constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is view in side elevation of one of the fence posts shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of a modified form of insulator usabl with the fence post shown.
The wire fence shown comprises a single wire In supported by a series of posts II and electrically charged in any known or approved manner.
In this instance each post shown is formed of a relatively long narrow strip of steel cut to form a substantially flat head I2 at one end and bent throughout the remaining length thereof to form a longitudinal stiffening flange I3.
The head I2 is shown slotted at I 4 to receive and support a circular insulator I5 of a well known type having a central opening I6 and an external peripheral groove II. The slot [4 is preferably curved at its base and of such width that the fingers I8 at opposite sides thereof engage within the groove I! to position and retain the insulator. Any suitable tie, such as a rubber band 2| applied over the wire I at opposite sides of the insulator I and with its opposite ends 22 looped beneath the head I2, may be employed to retain the insulator in the slotted head I 2.
In erecting the fence an insulator I5 is mounted in the head I2 of each post II after the latter is driven into the ground and the wire I 0 is threaded through the openings I6 in the several insulators for support thereby.
It will be noted that, before the insulator I5 is mounted in each post II, the upper end I9 of the flange I3 thereof is exposed and forms a shoulder by which the post may be conveniently driven into the ground. Also the bottom of the head I2 provides a convenient shoulder 20 by which the post may be driven out of the ground when it is desired to remove or transfer the fence to a new or different area.
If desired, a substantially U-shaped insulator such as shown at I5 in Fig. 4 may be used in place of the circular insulator I5 of Figs. 1 to 3. It will be noted that the insulator I5, is particularly well adapted for use with a barbed wire I0, since the open slot I6 thereof makes it possible to admit the barbed wire thereinto, thereby avoiding the necessity of threading the wire with its barbs therethrough as would be required with the insulator I5. Moreover, the straight sided external groove ll of insulator I5 coacts with the slotted head I2 to retain the insulator I5 in upright position with the slot I6 directed upwardly. A tie member such as a rubber band 2| arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 2 may be used to retain the wire II) in the slot I6.
Various changes may be made in the embodiment of the invention hereinabove specifically described without departing from or sacrificing the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
An electric fence post comprising an elongated metal strip transversely cut adjacent one end thereof to form a head portion separated from an adjacent edge portion of said strip, said edge portion being bent out of the plane of said head portion to form a longitudinally extended reinforcing flange for said strip, said head portion having an opening therein to receive and support a wiresupporting block of insulating material.
