INVENTOR William T. Cox
v Fig 2 ATTORNEY FENCE STRUCTURE William T. Cox, 8146 San Fernando Way, Dallas, Tex. Filed Aug. 27, 1958, Ser. No. 757,500
3 Claims. (Cl. 256-11) This invention relates to a fence post top and arm, and it concerns more particularly interchangeable top and arm fittings for use in conjunction with either tubular or solid fence posts formed of any suitable material.
An object of the invention is to provide a top guard for a fence post having a socket adapted to enclose the top of the post, and a rail and arm supporting member connected to the socket and extending upwardly therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in combination with a top guard of the type described, an elongated wire receiving arm, and means removably securing the arm to the top guard in predetermined position relative thereto.
A further object of the invention is to provide a system of mutually interchangeable fence post tops and arms in which the tops are adapted to be used with either upstanding or inclined arms, and in which the arms are adapted to be used with posts of different sizes and shapes.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a fence post top and arm of the type described which are of simple, rugged construction, may be manufactured inexpensively, is efficient in use and comparatively indestructible.
Another object of the invention is to provide a top guard for a fence post having a socket, adapted to enclose the top of the post, and a metal strip connected at its ends to the socket and extending upwardly therefrom, the strip being bent angularly intermediate its ends to form a first loop, positioned immediately. above the socket and adapted to receive the top rail of a fence, and asecond loop, smaller than the first loop, positioned above the first loop and forming a symmetrical top for the top guard.
Another object of the invention is to provide a top guard of the type described in which the first loop is substantially rectangular, and the second loop is substantially diamond shaped and is flattened to form a pair of upwardly facing shoulders on opposite sides of the first loop, immediately below the second loop.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in combination with a top guard of the type described, an elongated wire receiving arm, channel shaped in cross section, having angular edges on opposite sides thereof, adjacent one end, embracing the second loop and coacting with the upwardly facing shoulders to maintain the arm in predetermined position relative to the post, and fastening means inserted through the second loop and corresponding openings formed in the adjacent end of the arm whereby the arm is removably secured to the post.
The invention will be readily understood by referring to the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a fence post top and arm embodying the invention, the arm being inclined relative to the vertical plane;
United States Patent Patented Sept. 27, 1 960 ice Figure 2 is a side elevational view of a fence post top similar to the one shown in Figure 1, showing in dotted lines a vertically disposed arm applied thereto;
Figure 3 is a sectional elevational view, taken on a median line, of the fence post top; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the fence post top and the vertically disposed arm shown in Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates generally a top guard for a fence .post embodying the invention. The top guard 1 has a socket 2, adapted to enclose the top of a fence post, shown in Figure 4 in dotted lines. A metal strip is connected at its ends to the socket 2, and extends upwardly therefrom.
The strip 3 is bent angularly intermediate its ends to form a first loop 4, positioned immediately above the socket 2 and adapted to receive the top rail of a fence, shown in Figure 4 in dotted lines, and a second loop 5, smaller than the first loop 4, positioned above the first loop 4 and forming a symmetrical top for the top guard 1.
Asshown, the ends of the strip 3 are passed downwardly through a slot 6 formed in the top of the socket 2, and folded parallel thereto. While the socket 2 is round, for use with round posts, the invention is also applicable to square posts, for example.
The first loop 4 is substantially rectangular and the second loop 5 is substantially diamond shaped and is flattened to form a pair of upwardly facing shoulders 7 on opposite sides of the first loop 4, immediately below the second loop 5.
As shown in Figure 1, an elongated wire receiving arm 8, which is inclined relative to the vertical plane, is removably secured to the top guard 1 as hereinafter described. The arm 8 is channel-shaped in transverse section, and has angular edges on opposite sides thereof, adjacent one end, as at 9. The arm 8 embraces the upper loop 5, and the angular edges 9 coact with the upwardly facing shoulders 7 to maintain the arm 8 in predetermined position relative to the post.
As shown in Figures 2 and 4, the Wire receiving arm 8 is disposed vertically relative to the top guard 1.
A bolt 10 is inserted through the upper loop 5, and corresponding openings 11 formed in the adjacent end of the Wire receiving arm 8, whereby the arm 8 is removably secured to the top guard 1.
A plurality of longitudinally spaced notches 12 are formed in the inclined upper edge of the arm 8, for engagement, respectively, by strands of barbed Wire or the like (not shown). The several strands of barbed wire or the like may be anchored in the notches 12 by any suitable means, as by a transverse wire (not shown) passed below the arm 8.
The invention may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
What is claimed is:
1. A top guard for a fence post having a socket, adapted to enclose the top of the post, and a metal strip connected at its ends to the socket and extending up wardly therefrom, the strip being bent angularly intermediate its ends to form a first loop, positioned immediately above the socket and adapted to receive the top rail of a fence, and a second loop, smaller than the first loop, positioned above the first loop and forming a symmetrical top for the top guard.
2. A top guard as described in claim 1 in which the first loop is substantially rectangular, and the second loop is substantially diamond shaped and is flattened to form a pair of upwardly facing shoulders on opposite sides of the first loop, immediately below the second loop.
3. In combination with a top guard as described in claim 2, an elongated wire receiving arm, channel-shaped in cross section, having angular edges on opposite sides thereof, adjacent one end, embracing the second loop and coasting with the upwardly facing shoulders to maintain the arm in predetermined position relative to the post, and fastening means inserted through the second 100p and corresponding openings formed in the adjacentend 5 of the arm whereby the arm is removably secured to the post.
