FENCEPOST.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 14, 1920.
Application filed June 10, 1919. Serial No. 303,031.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES SOHiVINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millvale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fenceposts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fence post and has for its primary object to construct a fence post of one piece of indestructible material thereby preventing renewal of the post at frequent intervals.
An object of the invention is to provide a fence post that may be manufactured cheaply and which will cooperate with the fence railings in a manner that the same will be eflectively held against movement.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken 1n connection with theaccompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a fence showing my post in position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the post.
Figs. 3 and 4 are views.
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one of the many forms in which my invention may be constructed, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the post having a laterally extending flange 2 with a horizontalsectional result that the post is of a T-shap'ed formation in cross section thereby giving'great of metal. The upper end portion of the post is flanged to provide a recess 3 in which 18 adapted to be seated the end portion crintermediate portion of the upper railing B.
By referring to Fig. 3 it will be seen that the end portions of the upper. railings B will be notched at a point 4 so that the edge 5. of the railings will come flush with the side of the post so that when the palings are nailed to the railing the latter will be effectively held associated with the post.
The post is further provided with auxiliary flanges 7 and 8 arranged on opposite sides and extending laterally of the flange 2 so as to provide recesses 9 and 10 for the reception of the end portion of the lower railings C. When the palings are attached it will be seen that the lower railings as well as the upper railings will be effectively held against displacement from their recesses and thereforethe post is effectively associated with the fence.
As clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 to i inclusive, all of the recesses or pockets 3, 9 and 10 are open at their upper ends. This permits ready removal and replacing of any panel of the fence, selectively, as conditions may require independently of the other panels.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it should be apparent thatI provide a fence post of simple substantial construction and may be manufactured at a relatively low cost and having the advantages'that the post, will be positively held associated with the fence without the necessityof a securing element. Of course it is to be understood that the exact shape of the post as illustrated in the drawing. may be changed with-' out departing from the spiritof the invention and therefore I do not desire to be lim- 7 and forming therewith an upwardly directed U-shaped pocket open at its upper end 7 adapted; -to receive the adjacent ends of fence rails, said post' being further pro-v vided adjacent its lower end with upwardly directed L-shaped elements extending. from the'head of the T and from the lateral faces of the stem of the T and cooperating therewith to form pockets open at their upper ends adaptedfor reception of the ends of rails and acting to hold the rails, against downward, lateral, and 'endwise movement in the direction of the post.
In testimony whereof I affix my'signature.
V Attest:
JoHN W. FINK.
CHARLES soHIvINs'.
