Description
Patented May 3, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHARPENER Jacob Brockley, Newport News, Va. Application January 23, 1947, Serial No. 723,837
1 Claim.
This invention relates to Sharpeners, and more particularly to a combined knife, scissors and razor blade Sharpener.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved Sharpener of the kind to be more specically described hereinafter which is convenient and inexpensive, simple in construction and operation, to facilitate the sharpening of knives, scissors and razor blades to fill a need of such a device in homes and many business establishments.
Another object of this invention is t-o provide a tool of this kind having an abrasive wheel for sharpening scissors and razor blades and rollers for sharpening knives. A supporting plate is provided in which the scissors may be firmly held while being sharpened so that the proper cutting angle will be provided.
A further object of this invention is to provide a sharpening tool of this kind having an abrasive wheel and sharpening rollers supported on a clamp which may be readily set up on the edge of a table or bench when desired and just as readily removed when the tool is not being used. The abrasive wheel and rollers are rotatably mounted on the clamp in such a manner that they are held against rotation during the sharpening operations but may be rotated by the user when desired to provide for the equal wear on the abrasive surfaces and edges.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool Sharpener constructed according to an embodiment of this invention,
Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is a rear elevation,
Figure 4 is a top plan view partly broken away.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral I designates generally a Sharpener for scissors, razor blades and knives, which is readily portable and may be attached to the top of a table or bench Il when in use, and which may be readily stored when desired.
The Sharpener I0 comprises a combination of an abrasive wheel I2 for sharpening scissors and razor blades, and a pair of rollers I4 for sharpening knives or similar cutting instruments. The Sharpener I0 comprises a base I5 formed of a flat strip of metal which is adapted to overlie the top surface of a table II, forming an upper clamping jaw for the device. An L-shaped 2 clamping member I6 is fixed to the base I5, extending downwardly therefrom, the lower horizontal arm I1 of the clamping member I6 being provided with a threaded bore I8 through which the screw I9 engages for clamping the Sharpener I0 to the table.
The base I5 is formed with a vertically extending ange 20 on one side thereof for supporting the abrasive Wheel I2. The wheel I2 is provided for sharpening the scissors or razor blades and is preferably made of abrasive material such as silicon-carbide or aluminum oxide for sharpening scissors and oil stone for sharpening razor blades. A headed bolt 2| engages through the upper end of the flange 20 and through the Wheel I2 for rotatably supporting the wheel thereon. The bolt 2I is reduced at its inner threaded end as at 22 inwardly of the wheel I2. The head 2L. of the bolt is adapted to engage the outer side of the flange 2i] and a resilient spider 25 engages about the reduced end 22 of the bolt for frictionally holding the wheel I 2 against rotation.
The spider 25 is formed of a washer 2B which is adapted to abut the shoulder 21 formed by the reduced end 22 extending from the bolt 2I and having inwardly extending fingers 28 which press against the side ofthe wheel I2. 'I'he nut 29 may be securely tightened down on the spider 25 which will lock the spider to the wheel and to the screw 2I while permitting the wheel to be rotated by the user and holding it against rotation while the wheel is being used to sharpen a tool.
For supporting the blade of a scissors to be sharpened on the wheel I2, there is provided a Z-shaped supporting member 30 having a lower flange 3l which is adapted to be xed to the base I5 by rivets 32 or other suitable fastening devices and an upper flange 34 which serves as a platform on which the scissors blade 35 may be rested while the edge is being sharpened. The platform 34 or upper flange of the support 30 is disposed above the base I5 and below a plane parallel to the base through the axis of the wheel I2. The Z-shaped supporting member may be made or formed integrally with the base I5, so a separate part will not be necessary.
The tool supporting member 30 is located approximately from the horizontal plane through the axis of the wheel to provide for the proper cutting edge on the blade 35. A vertically extending ange 36 is formed on the base I5 on a side thereof, at right angles to the flange 20. The clamping member I6 is provided with ears 31 which are adapted to be fastened to the 3 ange 36 by rivets 38 or other suitable fasten ing devices. The flange 36 is further formed with a pair of transverse spaced apart upwardly extending arms 39 von which the rollers I4 are rotatably supported.
The rollers I4 are provided for sharpening the edge of a knife 40 and engage each other along the periphery thereof at a point substantially in the plane of the axis of the rollers. The rollers I4 are rotatably mounted onithe 'bolt Il, extending through the vnger 39 and the axis of the rollers I4, having a spider 42 on the inner reduced end of the bolt 4|. The bolts 4I are constructed in the same manner as the bolt 521 described above, and the spiders 42 are similar to the spider 25 described above, so thatthedescription of the spider 25 and bolt 2i will apply to the spider 42 and bolt 4|.
The discs I4 are made of tool steel, hardened and ground on the circumference to provide a suitable cutting medium for sharpening `the knives. For sharpening scissors, the abrasive wheel I2 is used. The .ilatside of thescissors blade is rested on the support ,30 in front of` the wheel. The cutting edgeof the scissors -is held against the face of the wheel with a .light pressure and the blade is moved vfrom end to 'end against fthe wheel until a smooth, sharp cutting edge is developed.
Razor blades are sharpened on top fot the wheel and a support is not necessary.
For sharpening knives, the steel rollers :are used. the cutting edges fof lthe knives are placed in cutting'contact with'the cutting edgev formed by the rollers I4. With :a light pressure the knife `is moved `vfrom end to end over fthe :rollers until a suitable cutting edge-.is formed. The spiders 25 and 42 hold the wheel Hand rollers VIII iagainst rotation while the Iblade of ka toolis being sharpened and may be rotated by the -nser to :permit an even wear 1on'the surface of the 4 wheel and rollers when the from the Sharpener.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A sharpening device comprising a base, an L-shaped clamping member onsaid base extending downwardly therefrom for clamping said lbase on a support, a vertically extending ange Von said base, upwardly extending arms on said ilange, a pair of peripherally engaging sharpeningrollers on said arms, headed bolts engaging through. said r.arms and said rollers adjustably 'mounting said rollers on said arms, a reduced .diameter threaded'end on said bolts defining a shoulder adjacent said end, a spring spider on saidthreaded end engaging said rollers and said shoulder for frictionally holding said rollers against rotation, and a nuton vsaid `bolts for adjusting vthe tension "of said spider.
