WILLIAM W. RoLLiNs, oF FoRT FAIRFIELD, MAINE.
HAY-RAoK.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 246,912, dated September 13, 1881.
i Application fiied May 21, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, 'WILLIAM W. RoLLINs, of Fort Fairtield, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improx-'ement's in Hay-Ruoks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing's, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved h ay-rack in position upon a wagon-bed. Fig. 2 is a bottom-plan view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a long'itudinal Vertical sectional view on the line x Fifl'. 2. Fig'. 4 is a section on the line y y, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is an end view.
Oorresponding` parts in the several figures are denoted bylike letters of reference.
This invention relates to removable hayracls for farm wagons; and itconsists in certain iniprovements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinaiter fully described, and particularly pointetl out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the bottom of the rack, which may remain permanently in position upon the runnina-gear, so as to form also the bottom of the ordinary wagon-bed. Said bottom is provided upon its under' side with two longitudinal beams, B B, projecting` at the ends, so as to form brackets U O, which are beveled upon their under sides, as shown, for the purpose to be hereinal'ter deseribed.
Thehay-rack consists of two side pieces, D D, and two end pieces, E F. The side pieces consist of foot bars or beams, G, and top rails, H, connected by rods I. In a similar manner the end frame-pieces are constructed of foot bars, J, top rails, K, and rods L. The foot bars, Gr, of the side pieces, D, are provided at their ends with longitudinal slots M, enlarged at their inner ends, as shown at N, to receive the bolts O at the ends of the foot bars, J, of the end pieces, which said bolts have enlarged heads P, so as to be retained in position by being slid toward the outer ends of the slots M. The top rails of the side and end pieces are notched, as shown at Q, so as to fit together nicely,=the
natural ela-sticity of said top rails tending to hold or retain the parts in position.
The foot bar, J, of end piece, E,,is provided upon its under side with a pair of loops or staples, R R, which are to be slipped over the brackets O, projecting at one end of the bottom A. The opposite end of the rack is then pressed down adjoining the end of the bottom, as clea-rly shown' in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thus holding and retaining' all the parts securely in position for operation.
My improved hay-rack is simple, durable, and inexpensive, and the component parts being light, it nia-y be easily adjusted or removed by a boy.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with a removable hayrack provided upon the under side of one end with loops or staples R R, of the bottom A, having projecting` end braokets, O, as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improvement in separable hayraclts, the combination of the side pieces, D, having foot bars, G, provided with slots M, having' enlargedinnerends, N, with the end pieces, E F, the foot bars, J, of which are provided with boltshaving enlarged heads, as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
3. In a hay-rack, the herein-described improved separable ends and sides having' top rails, H K, provided with notches Q, as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
4:. As an improvement in hay-racks, the combination, with the bottom A,having projecting beveled brackets O, of the separable sides D D and ends E F, the end E being provided with downward-projecting` loops or staples R, as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM W'. ROLLINS.
