-S. B. JONES. GOM-BINED GLOD GRUSHER, LEVELER, AND HARROW.l No.-576,852. Patented Feb. 9,'1897.
III t lll 9a/mae! UNITEDV VSri/vries PATENT GFFICE.
SAMUEL B. JONES, OF BUTLER, INDIANA.
COMBINEDACL-OD-CRUSHER, LEVELER, AND HARROW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 576,852, dated February 9, 1897'.
Application filed April 24, 1896.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, SAMUEL B. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, in the county of De Kalb and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Combined @lod-Crusher, Leveler, and Harrow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in farming'implements and it has for its object to provide a clod-crusher, leveler, and harrow all combined in a single construction and so formed as to permit of its being easily and quickly changed, so as to adapt the same to the character of the Work to be performed, and, further, to provide improved means for holding the Crusher-bars spaced at a uniform distance from each other.
To this end the invention consists, substantially, in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a combined @lod-crusher, leveler, and harrow constructed in accordance with the present invent-ion. Fig. 2is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 41.- is a detail perspective view illustrating a modification of one of the space-blocks.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures.
` Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a series of Crusher-bars square incross-section and preferably formed of wood and arranged so as to present one of their corners for action upon the ground. Passing through the Crusher-bars 1 and at each end thereof are tie-rods 2, which tie-rods are provided with l heads 3 and have the ends opposite thereto threaded to accommodate securing-nuts 4E.
For holding the Crusher-bars ata uniform distance from each other space-blocks 5 are employed. These space blocks are each formed of a single piece of wood and have their ends provided with substantially V-shaped notches G, which notches are adapted to receive the adjacent corners of the Crusher-bars 1 when said space-blocks are placed therebetween, and for retaining such space-blocks between the Crusher-bars the same are provided with openings 7, through which pass the tie-rods 2. It will therefore be seen that when Serial No. 588,944. (No model.)
is essentially of the same construction as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3,'and in this case the same is formed of a single piece of metal and has a V-shaped notch 8 in each of its ends, but the body portion is contracted in.
order to dispense with superfluous weight.
The Crusher-bars 1 are provided throughout their length at suitable intervals with teethapertures 9, which apertures are adapted to receive any suitable form of harrow-teeth when it is desired to employ the implement as a harrow. The crusher-bars at the extreme ends of the series also have openings 10, the purpose of which is to receive any suitable form of attaching means whereby draft-animals may be hitched to the same. From the fact that these openings 10 are formed at each end of the series of crusherbars it will be obvious that the draft may be from either end, thereby permitting the implement to be drawn iu a forward or rearward direction.
Mounted upon the crusher-bars at each end of the series thereof are also rest-blocks 11,
one end of the same being notched t receive the upper corners of the said bars, and disposed above the rest-blocks 11 and held by the latter above the Crusher-bars is a longitudinal seat-support 12, which seat-support is secured to the rest-blocks 11 by means of screws or bolts 13, the latter passing through said rest-blocks and into the crusher-bars, thereby securing the rest-blocks thereon. Secured to the support- 12 is a seat 14E, which may be of any approved construction and upon which the operator of the implement may sit while using the same.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple and cheap implement, and the operation and advantages of the same will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. When it is desired to employ the same simply as a crusher, the barrow-teeth are omitted, when the lower corners of the Crusher-bars 1 will bear directly upon the ground being worked, and by drawing said roo.v
erusl1er-l ars over such ground any clods therein will be effeetually broken and the saine leveled. Then required for use as a combined crnsher and harrow, the harrowteeth are inserted in the apertures 9, and it will be apparent that it may be used for such purposes.
Vhile I have illustrated the harrowteeth as disposed in straight rows, it will be obvious that I may arrange them diagonally of the series of Crusher-bars, or in any other preferred manner.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to he secured by Letters Patent, is-
In an agricultural implement of the character set forth,a series of square bars arranged in parallel relation with a corner in position to engage with the ground, tie-rods for con necting the bars, space-blocks mounted upon the tie-rods between the bars and having V- shaped notches in their ends to receive the corners of adjacent bars, rest-blocks mounted upon the bars and having Vshaped notches in their lower ends to receive the upper corners thereof, a longitudinal seat support placed upon the rest-blocks, means for securing the seat-support, rest-blocks and bars together, and a seat mounted upon the said support, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as iny own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses. y
SAMUEL B. JONES.
