WATCH Filed Nov. 15, 1947 /n van/ r E/w/VI 7 er ez Patented Apr. 12, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WATCH Erwin Piquerez, Bassecourt, Switzerland Application November 15, 1947, Serial No. 786,177 In Switzerland November 19, 1946 2 Claims. 1
This invention relates generally to watches and more particularly to watches of the kind which comprises a round-shaped movement arranged within a cylindrical recess of a watchcase, the bezel of which has a fancy-shaped aperture which is larger than the corresponding polygon inscribed in the circular periphery of this movement; the main feature of the present invention resides in that the Watch comprises a dial formed of two juxtaposed pieces, namely a fancy-shaped frame supported on the crystal-supporting shoulder of the bezel and held in place by the crystal, and a central fancy-shaped plate fitted in said frame and supported by the movement, the upper surfaces of those two pieces being at least approximately flush with each other.
The annexed drawing represents, by Way of example, a wrist watch embodying the invention.
Fig. 1 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof from the back.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on line III-III of Fig. 1.
The wrist watch shown in the drawing comprises a watchcase composed of a square integral case band and bezel l, a square crystal 2, and a round-shaped back 3 screwed in the threaded lower end of a cylindrical recess 4, intended to receive a round-shaped Watch movement 5 therein. This movement is supported within the recess 4 by a movement ring 6 held by set keys I. The square aperture of the bezel is larger than the square inscribed in the circular periphery of the recess 4, whereby the watchcase is given a less bulky appearance which more sharply defines its square configuration while preserving the advantages of the round-shaped back screwed in or snap-secured to the case body.
The dial is formed of two juxtaposed pieces, namely: a square frame 8, supported on the crystal-supporting shoulder ill of the bezel, in a recess l thereof and held in place by the crystal 2 which bears on its outer edge, and a central square plate 9 secured in a conventional Way on the front plate of the round-shaped movement and fitted in the frame 8 so that the upper surfaces of those two pieces are flush with each other. The square aperture of the shoulder I0 in which is fitted the central plate 9 has the size of the square inscribed in the circular periphery of the recess 4. The hour characters are situated on the frame 8. The watchcase is tightly sealed by means of a first packing l I placed between the back 3 and the case band i and of a second packing 12 placed between the outer flange of the crystal 2 and the shoulder I'll.
It is to be understood that the aperture of the bezel and that of the crystal-supporting shoulder might be rectangular or polygonal.
What I claim is:
1. In a watch of the type comprising a roundshaped movement housed in a cylindrical recess of a watchcase, in combination a bezel having a fancy-shaped aperture larger than the corresponding polygon inscribed in the circular periphery of said movement, said bezel having an inner shoulder for supporting a crystal, a dial composed of two juxtaposed pieces, namely a fancy-shaped frame supported on said shoulder of the bezel and held in place by said crystal, and a central fancy-shaped plate fitted in said frame and supported on said movement, the upper surfaces of those two pieces being substantially flush with each other.
2. In a watch of the character described, the combination as claimed in claim 1, wherein the aperture of the crystal-supporting shoulder of the bezel is substantially equal to the polygon inscribed in the circular periphery of the recess of the case.
ERWIN PIQUEREZ.
