Description

Ap 5, 1949. D. E. DAVIS METAL PROTECTOR FOR HORSE COLLARS Filed June 27, 1947 INVENTQR. DC! We,
m fi wr.
ATTCI R N EYS Patented Apr. 5, 1949 UNH'E'ED STATES i hiiiNT QFFICE 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a reinforcing device for horse collars, and has as its primary object the provision of means for increasing the strength of horse collars at the point of maximum drag, and consequently prolonging the life of such collars.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of a metallic reinforcing strip adapted to be applied to horse collars, and so arranged and constructed as to preclude the metal touching the body of the animal.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of such a device having means associated therewith whereby the collar may be readily separated when desired.
Still others will in part be obvious, and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds, and shown in the accompanying drawing wherein there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of one form of collar embodying features of the instant invention.
Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view disclosing the reinforcing attachment as separated from a collar, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line of 3-3 of Figure 1.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, and more particularly to Figure 1, there is generally indicated at Iii a horse collar, of substantially conventional design, including an inner rim ll adapted to bear against the neck of an animal, and comprised of a leather coating or the like filled with padding material l2 (see Figure 3). The horse collar is also comprised of an outer flanged portion l3 which may be integral with the portion H, and separated therefrom as by a line of stitching I 4 or the like, the exterior of the device being stitched together to form a flange I 5.
The device is separable at its upper half, and includes a buckle i6 and strap tongue I! for securing the parts in related assembly.
The lower portion is also separable, and this point, generally designated at 20 comprises one of the points of greatest wear on normal horse collars. The other two points on the side of the device generally indicated at 2!! comprise the points of maximum draw by the traces of the animal, and are consequently subject to greater wear than other portions of the device.
The reinforcing member of the instant invention, as best shown in Figure 2, comprises two separate metallic strips, 23 and 23 each of which is provided with a relatively wide portion 24 and 24 respectively terminating at its outer edge in a flange 25 and 25 provided with rivet holes 26 and 25 The flanges 24 and 24 are adapted to be positioned adjacent the points 2|, as best shown in Figure 1, and secured in position as by rivets 21 (see Figure 3) passing through the flange 55, and so arranged as not to interfere with the draw straps, or engage the body of the animal. The inner edges of strips 23 and 23 are upturned to provide a second flange I23 and 123 provided with rivet holes 28. Rivets I28 enter through these holes as well as two thicknesses of leather as seen in Figure 3. Both strip 23 and 23 include extending tongues 29 and 29 adapted to extend to a point adjacent the extreme bottom of the horse collar. The tongue 29 is provided with a plate 36, having two extending projections 3i thereon interiorly apertured to provide a bolt hole, While the tongue 29 is provided with a corresponding plate 32, having three projections 33 thereon, forming corresponding tongues adapted to interengage with the tongues 3 i. A bolt 33 is provided adapted to pass through the aligned apertures of the portions 30 and 32, and is provided with an aperture 35 at one end adapted for the engagement of a cotter pin 36 to hold the parts in related assembly.
As best shown in Figure 1 portions 30 and 32 may be secured to the extremities of the collar member as by means of rivets 31 or the like.
In order to preclude the contact of metal portions 3 and 32 with the neck of the animal a relatively soft leather flap 40 is provided, adapted to be suitably secured as by tacks or rivets 4| to the collar adjacent the clasp formed by plates 35) and 32, and 3 3, one end thereof being free, to permit ready disengagement of the parts, and the device being of sufficient size to cover all the metal parts.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved collar reinforcing member which protects the points of greatest wear on a conventional horse collar, which permits ready separation of the lower halves of the device, and which consequently prolongs the durability and life of the device, thus accomplishing all the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
In a reinforcing device for horse collars, a pair of metal strips adapted to be secured to opposite sides of the collar, coacting plates at the extremities of said strips having aligned apertures therein, and a pin adapted to be passed through said apertures for holdin said strips together, said strips being provided with widened portions at the points of greatest wear on the collar and flanges at the outer extremities of said widened portion for engaging said collar for receiving 15 REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
