This invention relates to improvements in jigs, and more particularly pertains to improvements in jigs adapted to secure machine bolts and the like for drilling transverse bores therein, and to position a drill for such operation.
In drilling transversely through the head or the threaded portion of a bolt, for the purpose of inserting a safety wire, cotter pin or the like therethrough, it has been common practice to lay out each workpiece and drill on a V-block support, or to construct a rudimentary jig adapted to handle a particular size of bolt. These methods, however, are wasteful of time and material, do not produce uniformly accurate results, and do not permit duplication of work on a production basis.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a jig of simple and durable construction adapted to secure a machine bolt or the like for drilling transverse bores therein and to guide a drill for the performance of such operation.
Another object is to provide a jig of the character described adapted to accommodate a range of sizes of workpieces.
Still another object is to provide a jig of the character described wherein a workpiece can be secured readily and facilely.
A further object is to provide a jig of the character described including a drill bushing adapted to be aligned normal to a workpiece.
Further objects and advantages of this invention, as Well as its construction, arrangement and operation, will be apparent from the following description and claims in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is an isometric view of a jig, partly broken away, showing a preferred embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an isometric view of an adjustable seat element of said jig; and
Fig. 3 is an isometric view of a modified form of seat element thereof.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A base plate II carries a first upright I3 adjacent one end of said base plate and a second upright I5 adjacent the opposite end of said base plate and parallel to said first upright. Each of said uprights defines substantially a right triangle in elevation, to facilitate manipulation of a workpiece in the hereinafter described discs thereof. Upright I3 is provided with a dome lug I1 protruding from the medial portion of the edge of the hypotenuse thereof, and upright I5 is proshaft hereinafter described. The external face of upright I3 is provided with a plurality of indexing pin bores 2i concentric the bearing of dome lug IT, and setscrew 23 extends into the bearing in dome lug I 9 to provide means for securing said shaft against rectilinear movement.
Slot 25 in upright I3 is disposed normal to base plate II, and similar slot 21 in upright I5 is disposed similarly. Arm 29 integral the end of upright I3 distal base plate II extends from said upright, being disposed in the elevation plane of said upright and parallel to the plane of said base. Similar arm 3I is disposed similarly upon upright I5. Each of said arms is provided with a transverse recess in the edge of said arms distal base plate I I adapted to carry slidably a slide bar hereinafter described. Arm 29 is provided with a threaded bore that receives the adjusting screw of said slide bar, and thumbscrew 33 extends into arm 3| to furnish means for securing said adjusting screw against rectilinear movement.
Disc 41, carried on hub 49, is mounted slidably on shaft 35, a suitable keyway in said disc and said hub being engaged by key 3'! to prevent rotation of said disc relative shaft 55. Setscrew 5| in hub 49 is adapted to prevent rectilinear movement of disc 41 relative shaft 35. A plurality of bores 53, of a range of sizes, extend through disc 41, said bores being disposed in suitable spaced relation and preferably sequentially according to diameter. Radial slots 55 communicate between said bores 53 and the periphery of disc ll, the
longitudinal center line of said slots intersecting vided with a similar and similarly disposed dome lug I9, said dome lugs providing bearings for the the center of said bores. Preferably, the Width of each of said slots is somewhat less than the diameter of itsassociated bore, so that the side walls of said slots can serve as guides for a drill bushing hereinafter described.
Disc 51, carried on hub 59, is mounted slidably on shaft 35, a suitable keyway in said disc and said hub being engaged by key 31 to prevent rotation of said disc relative shaft 35. Setscrew SI in hub 59 is adapted to prevent rectilinear movement of disc 51 relative shaft 35. A plurality of bores 63, of a range of sizes corresponding to the sizesof Slide bar 69 is seated slidably in the recesses of arms 29 and 3!, lead screw 1| driven by hand The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
I claim:
1. A jig comprising a base plate, a first upright ,and a ;second upright, extending irpm ,opposite ends of said base-plate, a shaft mounted'between said uprights, a first disc slidable rectilinearly on said shaft and rotatable on the axis of said wheel I3 being adapted to feed said slide bar rec tilinearly; lead screw M is threaded thro gharm 29 and rotates in bearings in arm 3| and in arm of slide bar 69. Longitudinal slots and I9 in slide bar 69 carry thumb, screws 8,! and33 respectively, thumb screw 8| being threaded into' removably therein. The longitudinal axis of. bor

,A workpiece limit or stop assembly is carried .slidably in slot of upright I3. Said stop as .sembly includes a bar .89, a lug 9| mountedon a face .of said bar and engaged slidably in slot .25, a thumbscrew, 93 extending v.intosaidlug from .the external face of upright and ad apted to secure said bar 89 againstgmovement relative upright I 3, and a threaded pin 95, adapted to be ..fed by rotation of head 91 and furtheradapted, to ,be secured against such rotation bymeans of lock nut 99. Said pin 95 is threaded inb ar,89, withsaid pin in axial parallelism with'the shaft the respective axes of said pin and saidshaftlying in the same vertical plane, and thecentelffif said .pin being aligned with the ,centerspfcorrespondling bores 53 and 63.

A jig comprising a base plate, a first upright and a second upright extending from opposite ends of said base plate, a shaft mounted rotatably and slidable rectilinearly between said uprights, means to secure said shaft against such rotation, means to secure said shaft against such rectilinear movement, a disc slidable rectilinearly on said shaft, means to secure said disc against such rectilinear movement, a plurality of bores of a range of sizes arranged in correspondence relation in said disc, radial slots communicating between the periphery and the bores of said disc, setscrews in said disc communicating from the periphery to the bores thereof, a bar carried slidably between said uprights, means to move said bar rectilinearly, means to secure said bar in selected position, and a drill bushing mounted removably in said bar and adapted to be aligned with a selected radial slot.
5. A jig comprising a base plate, a first upright and a second upright extending from opposite ends of said base plate, a shaft mounted rotatably and slidable rectilinearly between said uprights, means to secure said shaft against such rotation, means to secure said shaft against such rectilinear movement, a first disc slidable rectilinearly on said shaft, means to secure said disc against such rectilinear movement, a second disc slidable rectilinearly on said shaft, means to secure said second disc against such rectilinear movement, a plurality of bores of a range of sizes arranged in correspondence relation in said discs, radial slots communicating between the periphery and the bores of one of said discs, setscrews in the other of said discs communicating from the periphery to the bores thereof, a bar carried slidably between said uprights, means to move said bar rectilinearly, means to secure said bar in selected position, and a drill bushing mounted removably in said bar and adapted to be aligned with a selected radial slot, a stop mounted adjustably in one of said uprights and adapted to abut the end of a workpiece positioned in said cores, and a seating element mounted adjustably in the other of said uprights and adapted to provide a seat for the opposite end of said workpiece.
