Filed June 12, 1947 M. HELLINGS BOAT BUILDER'S CLAMP 2 Shets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR.
M/CHAIEL HELL/N66 ATTU R N EYS Patented Mar. 15, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE My present invention relates to the general class of pushing and pulling implements of the jack type employing a single throw pivoted, lever and clamp or base plate therefore, and more specifically to an improved boat builders clamp which, while adapted for various other purposes is especially designed to press against and hold down the side boards against the ribs or frame structure, as well as for use in clamping down planking on the deck, of a small boat, in the process of boat building.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lever operated mechanism for this purpose that is composed of a minimum number of parts that may with facility be manufactured at low cost of production, and assembled with convenience, to insure a manually operated implement that may be easily handled for clamping or pressing the successive boards temporarily into place in order that the boards may be fastened to the ribs or frame of the boat in usual manner.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts involving a detachable clamp forming the fulcrum support for a single throw lever, together with an adjustable presser on the lever for the application of power, and in other combinations as will be hereinafter described. In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a complete example of a physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged in accord with one mode I have devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention. It will however be understood that changes and alterations are contemplated and may be made in these exemplifying drawings and mechanical structures, within the scope of my appended claims, without departing from the principles of the invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a fragment of a boat hull, showing an implement embodying my invention and in position for use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged side view of the implement, part of the hand lever being broken away for convenience of illustration.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail transverse sectional view through the clamp device, as at line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional detail view as at line 44 of Fig. 2.
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view at line 5-5 of Fi 2.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view enlarged showing the use of a retainin pin for a portion of a cross section of a boat including one of the frame ribs R and some of the longitudinally extending boards B secured to the rib,
and the purpose of the implement is to tem porarily clamp successive boards into close con- '1 tact with each other and with the 'rib so that the board and rib may be properly'fastened together in suitable or usual manner.
In mountingthe manually operated implement it is rigidly clamped upon one of the ribs R, by means of an upright base plate I that is equipped with a pair of integral vertically spaced projections or lugs 2 and 3 for frictional engagement with the outer face of the rib R, and for co-action with these clamping lugs the plate is provided with a clamp bolt 4 threaded in a bracket 5 of the base plate and provided with a head 6 for impingement against the inner side or face of the rib R.
The clamp, when in place forms a fulcrum base or pivotal support for a single throw lever I that is pivotally mounted on the base plate by means of a fulcrum bolt 8 which passes through holes in a U-shaped reinforcing yoke 9, through the lever, and also through a spacing washer l0; and the bolt is secured by a usual lock nut l l For guiding the movement of the lever, and for use in retaining it in locked position a slightly ofi'set strap I2 is welded or otherwise secured at its ends to the base plate, and the strap is drilled with multiple holes or apertures l3 for selective use in receiving a retaining or locking pin l4 that is adapted to frictionally engage the upper edge of the lever, after the board is pressed into place and while the board is being fastened to the rib.
For application of the power transmitted by a down stroke of the lever to the board B, the lever is equipped with a slidable and adjustable presser chuck or tubular block l5 that surrounds the lever and is adapted to be slid into engagement with the upper edge of the board B and contact its outer face for pressing the board into place.
For this purpose the chuck is fashioned with 55 an integral angular bracket having presser faces I6 and I! for contact with the board in pressing it downwardly and inwardly, and then in co-action with the retaining pin M the board is temporarily held in place by the implement.
The adjustable presser chuck, or dog for the application of power from the lever is slidably adjustable for initial engagement with the board, and after adjustment against the board the presser is locked, automatically, in place by means of a key-wedge l8 that is inserted in the bore of the chuck, between the chuck and the lever, and the chuck is held in place by means of a spring 19, mounted in the presser chuck, which forces the wedge l8 against the bore.
For releasing the lever, the resiliently retained chuck i8 may be pushed into the bore of the chuck against the spring I9, the locking pin [4 may be removed; and then the clamp bolt may be turned backward to disengage the base plate from the rib; whereupon the implement may be removed, and successively used in the manner described.
Having, thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V
1. In a boat builders implement, the combination with a clamp device forming a fulcrum base, and a single throw lever, pivotally mounted on thebase, of a slidably adjustable presser element mounted on the lever and resilient means for retaining said element .in operative position, and co-acting means on the base and lever for re.- taining the lever in position for application of its power. I
2. In a boat builders implement, the combination with a clamp device forming a fulcrum base, a single throw lever pivotally mountedon the base, an apertured strap mounted on the base for guiding the lever, and a locking pin mounted in the strap for engagement with the lever, of a 4 slidably adjustable presser element mounted on the lever, and resilient means co-acting with the element and the lever for retaining the element in position on said lever for application of its power.
3. In a boat builders implement the combination with a clamp device forming a fulcrum base, a lever pivotally mounted on the base, a slidably adjustable presser chucl; mounted on the lever, and a Spring pressed key-wedge co-acting with the chuck and lever, of an aperturecl strap mounted on the base for guiding the lever, and a locking pin mounted in the strap for frictional engagement with the lever.
4. In a boat builders clamp, the combination with a clamp device including a base plate having spaced clamp lugs, and a clamp bolt operatively mounted on the base plate, of a lever pivotally mounted on the base plate, an apertured guide strap rigid with the base plate, a locking pin mounted in the strap for frictional engagement with the lever, an adjustable presser chuck mounted on the lever, and means for retaining the chuck in adjusted position on the lever.
5. In a boat builders clamp, the combination with a base plate having a pair of spaced clamp lugs, a. clamp bolt operatively mounted on the plate for co-action. with the lugs, and a lever pitotally mounted on the base plate, of an apertm'ed strap mounted on thebase plate for guiding the lever, a locking pin mounted in the strap for irictionally engaging the lever, a slidably adjustable presser chuck mounted on the lever, and a. spring-pressed key-wedge co-acting with the lever and chuck for locking the latterxin operative position. 1
