CLOTHESLINE FASTENER.
Application filed September This invention relates to clothes line fasteners.
Objects of this invention are to provide a clothes line fastener which is of very simple construction, which will automatically lock the clothes line in adjusted position, which will permit the ready tightening of the line and automatically release it during the tightening operation and re-engage it after the correct tension has been attained.
Further objects are to provide a clothes line fastener which is so constructed that it may readily receive a plurality of lines if desired, and which may be cheaply con-l structed and easily mounted.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the `fastener showing it in line locking` position in full lines and showing the detached position of the fastening` pawl in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a front view of the device.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the fastener comprises a base 1 provid ed with a pair of apertures through which the attaching screws 2 'for securing the device to a support may be readily passed. This base plate 1 is provided with a centrally located upstanding lug 3 to which are pivotally secured a pair of pawls 4. These pawls 4 have enlarged hubs which receive the pintle pin 5 and have rounded binding surfaces or lower ends 6 which press the downwardly extending portion of the clothes line 7 tightly against the face of the plate l. Preferably, the lower ends of the members 4 are provided with guiding lianges 8 to prevent the lines from slipping outwardly from beneath the ends 6. The upper ends of the latching members are each provided with a pair of diverging ears 9 which receive between them the clothes line 7. These ears are rearwardly curved, as shown in Figure 1.
In using the device, the clothesline is positioned between the ears 9 of the pawl member and is passed downwardly between the plate 1 and the binding surface 6 at the lower end of the pawl member. The pull of the line will rock the member 4 in a counter clockwise direction, as shown in Figure 1, and will cause its lower end to bind 26, 1925. Serial No. 58,844.
afrainst the line 7 thus clamping it againstk tne plate 1 and holding it in position. If, however, it is desired to tighten the line it is merely necessary to pull downwardly up- 13 9 will strike against the plate 1 and thus hold the pawl member against 'further motion in a clockwise direction. This permits a free passage for the line and prevents binding of the line against the plate 1 while it is being drawn in tightly. However, when the pull upon the free end of the line is released, the pawl member rocks in a counter clockwise direction and its lower end binds against the line and thus clamps it in adjusted position.
It will thus be seen that a very simple type of clothes line fast-ener has been provided which may be cheaply made, and which may be most easily operated.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail,'it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
A clothes line fastener comprising a plate,
a lug projecting 'from said plate, and a latching lever pivoted intermediate its ends to said lug, said plate extending upwardly beyond the upper end of said lever, said lever having a lower end adapted to bind said clothes line against said plate and having a pair of spaced ears at its upper end adapted to receive said clothes line between them, said ears being rearwardly curved and eX- tending beyond the outline of the body of said lever, one of said ears being adapted to contact with said plate to hold the upper end of said lever spaced from said plate. whereby said line may be freely tightened by pulling on'the lower end without binding between the lever and said plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at lllauwatosa, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lllisconsin.
ISAAC BONN EAU.
