G. BIRKMANN.
TRUNK.
Patented Aug. 30,1881.
WITNESSES R w N B I Y B ATTORNEY N. PETERS. PhMv-Lflhognphor. Washington. D. C.
' NITED STATES PATENT OFFIC} GEOBG BIRKMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,364, dated August 30, 1881.
Application filed June 16, 1881.
-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORG BIRKMANN, of the city,'county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved construction of trunks, which is designed mainly with a view to dispense with exterior hinges and impart to the trunk a greater degree of strength and safety, as any tampering with the hinges and opening of the trunk are prevented.
The invention consists of a trunk the lid of which is hinged to the body by means of in terior bracket-plates attached to the corners of the lid. The bracket-plates are guided by arc-shaped slots on projecting pins of upwardly-extending side plates of the body of the trunk. The slotted bracket-platesare notched at the rear edge, so as to bind 0n fixed lower pins of the interior side plates'when the lid is closed. In connection with this interior hingeconnection of the lid, rear and front fastening devices are employed, by which the lid is firmly locked to the body.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my'improved trunk, shown with the lid in open position. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a side view and a perspective View of the side-plate of the body and bracket-plate of the lid.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A in the drawings represents the body, and B the lid or cover, of my improved trunk.
To the inside of each rear corner of the lid B is applied a bracket-plate, O, which is, however, so secured as to be a short distance from the inner surface of the side wall of the lid, to give room for a side plate, D, which is attached to each side wall of the body A, close to the rear wall thereof. The bracket-plates G are extended downward, so as to pass sidewise of the side plates, D, the bracket-plates 0 being connected to the latter by an arc-shaped slot, a, which is guided on a fixed inwardly projecting pin, b, of the side plate, D, so as to away the trunks when not in use.
(No model.)
guide the lid when it is thrown into open or closed position and retain it when the pins have arrived at the lower ends of the guide a binding-plate, c, and shoulder a are arranged at the rear wall of the trunk and lid, respectively, while the front part of the lid B is locked to the front part of the body Aby a lock, which throws, by the turning of the key, properly-guided bolts fin opposite direction, said bolts serving to engage recessed corner and intermediate hasp-plates f of the lid, so as to secure the same simultaneously at four points by one and the same turn of the key. As thelid is furthermore connected to the body at three points of the rear wall it is altogether fastened at seven different points, and thus secured in a most effective and reliable manner.
As neither the springs nor the locking devices can be tampered with from the outside of the trunk amore reliable trunk construction is furnished. As the connecting-bracle ets retain the lid also firmly in open position the usual woven straps employed for holding the lid may be dispensed with. As exterior hinges are done away with, there is less liability for the trunk to get out of order. Lastly, the bracket-plates connecting the lid with the plates of the body of the trunk permit the ready separation of the lid from the body in case it should be desired, for the sake of convenience in packing or unpacking or storing The connecting parts are screwed onto the lid and body. Consequently no recessing is necessary.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improvement in trunks, the combination of the body A, having side cornerplates, D, and guide pins 1), with bracket plates 0 of the lid B, said bracket-plates being connected by are-shaped guide-slots a with 1 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the pins of the side plates, 1), substantially as i my invention I have signed my name, in presand for the purpose set forth. ence of two Witnesses, this 11th day of June,
2. As an improvement in trunks, the eoin- 1881.
5 bination, with the body A, having side corner- 1 w plates, 1), provided with guide-pins b and (IEOLG LIRKMANN' binding-pins d below the former, with bracket- Vitnesses: plates 0 of the lid B, said bracket-plates hav- PAUL GOEPEL, ing are-shaped guide-slots a and recesses d, CARL KARP.
10 substantially as set forth.
