Claims. 1

This .invention relates. to new and useful improvements in applicators, and has for an object to provide a device that is primarily designed for applying permanent hair waving tion or other liquids, including hair colorings, to. strands of hair without the liquid or the applicator'itself coming incontact withthe scalp.

A further object of the invention is to provide means by which the hair may be gripped or picked up and held or combed away from the scalp without the necessity of the operators fingers or hands coming in contact with the hair or with the liquid contained in the applicator.

Another object is to provide a hair applicator that is simple in structure and construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely efiicient in its uses and servicing.

Furthermore, a new applicator will protect the operators fingers and hands from skin ailments caused by direct contact with the liquid used in permanent waving, many of which are injurious to the operators skin.

Devices are known which apply liquids to the hair. None or" these devices, however, provides means by which strands of hair may b gripped at the top and bottom surfaces simultaneously without contact with the operators fingers and hands while the strands of hair are combed and processed outwards from the scalp, as is necessary in the permanent hair waving procedure.

Another objectoi the invention is tosave time during the permanent waving process. This is achieved by providing simple means by which strands of hair may be combed, moistened, and smoothed or wrung out in one operation or in one'application of this .improved applicator.

Still another object is to provide an applicator which may be used by. itself or attached to bottles or other containers holding the liquid to be applied.

A further object is to provide an applicator which will contain means for receiving and retaining the excess liquid which may be released or pressed outof the strands of hair to be treated.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device which will shut ofi the fiow of liquid from the container when the device is not in use.

Still further, it is proposed to provide nipplelike openings in the liquid container, with a sponge at the rear. This will allow the use of heavy and creamy permanent waving lotions to be used in the device.

Another object of the .inventionis to provide proper openings in the .containerwhichwill. allow an even flowof liquids onto the hair. This will be particularly useful in the application. of. colorings to the hair to be so treated.

With the foregoing and other objects inview, which will appear as the description, proceeds, the invention resides in the combination described below and the arrangement of parts and in the details of. construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiments of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The applicator for permanent waving lotions and other liquids, in accordance with this invention, includes a container ID for permanent waving lotions, hair colorings, or other liquids for treating'of hair. The container 10 is closed with a removable stopper l'l. Liquid applying means is connected with the container 10 for applying the liquid from said container upon strands of hair, schematically indicated on the drawing by reference numeral l2.

This liquid applying means includes a plurality of passage 14 extended throughthe bottomof the container l0 and communicating with a sponge l 5 or other absorbentand liquid applying element. The sponge I5 is mounted in a slide 16 which is slidably engaged in a. dove-tailed groove l1 formed in the bottom of the container In. The slide 16 is provided with openings 18 normally aligned with the openings l4.. The sides of the slide. l6 :are adapted .to ,releasably .hold the spring 15 so that the sponge may.-be:replaced when desired, or'replacement of the sponge may be accomplished by replacing theslide I16 with said sponge l5.

A valve control 19 controls the passage of the liquid from the container to through the openings M and 18 to the sponge 5H3. The valve 19 is limited to operate from a. closed 1130.9J1 open position andback :again by a I pin 32.0. mounted .in

the bottom of the container I and engaging a slot 2I formed in the valve I9. The valve I9 has a projecting end 22 by which it may be manually operated. The valve I9, as illustrated, comprises merely a slide valve having openings 23 alignable with the openings I4 in the open position of the valve and adapted to be disaligned with these openings in the closed position of the valve.

Liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means is spaced beneath said liquid applying means for pressing out excess liquid from and smoothing said strands of hair I2. Said liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means includes a tubular member-25 provided with perforations 26 in its top portion and normally holding absorbent material 21, such as cotton, to absorb the excess liquid. The cotton 21 may be removed and replaced whenever required. Control means connects the container I0 and said liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means for moving them together and apart and along said strands of hair I2. Said control means comprises a U-shaped handle 28 of spring steel or other resilient material adapted to be held with one hand and arranged so that the ends thereof may be squeezed together and let apart. The container I0 is attached to the top arm of said U-shaped handle 28. The tubular member 25 is attached to the bottom arm of said U- shaped handle 28 in a position directly beneath the container I0. Normally, when the handle 23 is free the tubular member 25 is slightly spaced from the bottom of the sponge I5, as illustrated in Fig. 2.

The ends of the arms of the handle 28, indicated by the reference numerals 29, are disposed in a vertical plane. The central and back portions of the handle 28 extend laterally of this plane, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, so that the handle 28 does not interfere with the strands of hair I2. The arms of the handle 28 are formed with pressed out portions 30 for reinforcing and stiffening said arms. The central connecting juncture 3i of the handle 28 has its edge portions turned inwards for reinforcing same and preventing the handle 28 from being deformed while being used.

Comb means is associated with the container H] for combing the strands of hair I2. This comb means is in the nature of comb teeth 32 mounted on and projecting from the bottom portion of the container I0 and extending obliquely and downwardly as illustrated in Fig. 2.

The operation and use of the applicator may be understood from the following:

The container I0 is filled with a permanent waving lotion, or hair coloring liquid, or other liquid for the treatment of hair. The liquid may be supplied to the container I0 by removing the stopper II. The operator works on strands of hair I2 of the patron and first combs the strands suitably by engaging the strands of hair I2 between the sponge I and tubular member and moving the applicator so as to engage the teeth 32 through the strands of hair. The arrow A in Fig. 2 indicates the direction of combing. The assumption is that the patron is at the left and the operator moves the applicator towards the right away from the scalp, as indicated by the arrow A.

The valve I9 is now opened so that a suitable quantity of liquid passes through the openings I4, 23 and I8 and wets the sponge I5. The operator now engages the liquid from the sponge I5 upon the strands of hair I2 by moving the applicator from the persons head outwards while simultaneously pressing together the arms of the handle 28 so as to cause the sponge I5 to engage against the top of the strands of hair I2, and the tubular member 25 to simultaneously engage against the bottom of the strands of the hair I2. The liquid will sift through the strands of hair I2 and excess liquid will enter the perforations 26 and be absorbed by the absorbent material 21. The tubular member 25 will smooth out the strands of hair. It should be noted that there is no necessity for the liquid to directly come in contact with the operators fingers and hands. This will avoid skin irritations which operators are subject to.

In Fig. 6 a modified form of the invention has been disclosed in which the applicator is simplified. This simplified applicator includes a container 35 for permanent waving lotion, hair colorings or other liquids for treating the hair. The container 35 is closed with a removable stopper 36. Liquid applying means is connected with the container 35 for applying the liquid from the container upon strands of hair schematically indicated on the drawing by reference numeral 31.

The liquid applying means includes a plurality of passages 38 extending through the bottom of the container 35 and communicating with a sponge 39 or other absorbent and liquid applying element which is attached on the bottom of the container 35.

Liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means is spaced beneath said liquid applying means, and

; includes an arm 40 for pressing out excess liquid from and smoothing said strands of hair 31 when the applicator is in use. Said liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means comprises said arm 40 which is a part of a spring steel or other resilient handle II. This handle 4| has a curved end 42 which is connected by fastening elements 43 to the rear end of the container 35. The arm 40 has a rounded top face 44 for facilitating its movement along the strands of hair 31.

The operation of this form of the invention may be understood from the following:

The liquid from the container 35 will pass through the openings 38 and wet the sponge 39. The sponge 39 will prevent the liquid from freely flowing out of the container 35. The strands of hair 31, as illustrated in Fig. 6, run forwards and rearwards of the drawing sheet, that is, not from side to side. The operator presses the handle 4| so as to clamp the strands of hair 31 between the arm 40 and the sponge 39. Then the applicator is moved along the length of the strands of hair so that the sponge 39 wets the hair and the arm 49 presses out excess liquid from the strands of hair and at the same time smooths said strands of hair.

In other respects the advantages and operation of this form of the invention are identical to the prior form.

While we have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of our invention, it is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. An applicator for permanent waving lotions and other liquids. comprising a container for liquid, liquid applying means connected with said container for applying liquid from said container upon strands of hair, liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means beneath said liquid applying means for pressing out excess liquid from and smoothing said strands of hair, and control means connecting said container and liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means for moving them together and apart and along said strands of hair.

2. An applicator for permanent waving lotions and other liquids, comprisin a container for liquid, liquid applying means connected with said container for applying liquid from said container upon strands of hair, liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means beneath said liquid applying means for pressing out excess liquid from and smoothing said strands of hair, and control means connecting said container and liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means for moving them together and apart and along said strands of hair, said liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means including a removable absorbent member for absorbing excess liquid.

3. An applicator for permanent waving lotions and other liquids, comprising a container for liquid, liquid applying means connected with said container for applying liquid from said container upon strands of hair, liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means beneath said liquid applying means for pressing out excess liquid from and smoothing said strands of hair, and control means connecting said container and liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means for moving them together and apart and along said strands of hair, said liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means including a perforated tubular member and absorbent material within said member.

4. An applicator for permanent waving lotions and other liquids, comprising a container for liquid, liquid applying means connected with said container for applying liquid from said container upon strands of hair, liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means beneath said liquid applying means for pressing out excess liquid from and smoothing said strands of hair, and control means connecting said container and liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means for moving them together and apart and along said strands of hair, said control means comprising a U-shaped spring handle and said container and liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means being mounted on the arms thereof.

5. An applicator for permanent waving lotions and other liquids, comprising a container for liquid, liquid applying means connected with said container for applying liquid from said container upon strands of hair, liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means beneath said liquid applying means for pressin out excess liquid from and smoothing said strands of hair, and control means connecting said container and liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means for moving them together and apart and along said strands of hair, said control means comprising a U-shaped spring handle having arms with outer ends and said container and liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means being mounted on said arms, the outer ends of said arms being disposed in a plane, and the remaining portion of said handle being directed laterally of said plane so as not to obstruct the passage of strands of hair between said liquid applying means and said liquid pressing out and hair smoothing means.
