Description

March 1, 1949. 1 P. JARRELL l2,463,277
EXERCISING DEVICE Filed sept. 7, 1945 Inventor ef/eue! P Jar/wed,
Patented Mar. 1, 1949 NET!) STATES ATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in exercising devices and more particularly to a frame or base for supporting a platform for vertical swinging movement and on which a person may stand during the swinging of the platform.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for securing the' person in a standing position on the platform during the vertical swinging movement thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for bracing the shoulders of a person against upward movement while standing on a vertical swinging platform, the platform being swingably actuated by pressure exerted at the opposite sides thereof by the legs of the person to thus exercise the muscles of the body.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is emcient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a rear elevational view, and
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken substantialli7 on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a, base which is preferably of tubular construction and having front and rear upstanding supports 5 and 'l rising from the front and rear edges thereof. The supports S and I are preferably inclined inwardly toward each other as indicated in Figures l and 3 of the drawings and with the upper ends of the supports extending in spaced apart parallel relation as indicated at 8.
The vertical upper portions 8 of the supports 6 and 7 are provided with a plate 9 in which vertically spaced openings I0 are formed adapted for receiving front and rear bolts and nuts I I and I2, respectively, in vertically adjusted positions on the supports.
A U-shaped platform I3 is swingably attached at its upper end on the bolts II and I2 between the supports 6 and I and on which a person is adapted to stand.
The rear of the platform is formed at its edges with forwardly projecting apertured lugs I4 to which straps (not shown) may be attached for extending across the lower portion of the legs of the erson as well as across the waist thereof.
A pair of shoulder engaging hooks I5 are provided at their lower ends with vertically spaced openings I il for securing in vertically adjusted position on the rear bolt I2, the shoulder hooks extending upwardly in diverging relation from the bolt i2 and being curved forwardly at their upper ends for extending over the shoulders of the person standing on the platform I3 with his back to the shoulder-engaging hooks I5 and said hooks curving forwardly over his shoulders, and with his legs planted at opposite side edges of the platform.
Accordingly, the person standing on the platform i3 in the manner described has his body or torso above the waistline braced by the shoulderengaging hooks I 5 against movement upwardly while the lower portion or legs of the person are adapted for use to push alternately downwardly against the platform I3 at opposite side edges thereof to swing said platform.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary,
It is to be understood, however, that even though there' is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the append-ed claims.
What is claimed is:
l. An exercising device comprising a base including front and rear upstanding supports, a platform suspended from said supports to be swung about an horizontal axis by a person standing thereon and thrusting downwardly with the legs against opposite side edges of said platform, and means rigid with said base and extending over said platform for overlying and engaging the shoulders of the person to brace said shoulders against upward movement and thereby facilitate downward thrusting by the legs of the person.
2. An exercising device comprising a base including front and rear upstanding supports, a platform suspended from said supports to be 2,463,277 3 swung about an horizontal axis by a person stand- REFERENCES CITED ing thereon and thrusting downwardly With the legs against opposite side edges 0f said platform, and means rigid With said base and extending The following references are of record in the le of this patent:
