This invention relates to a toilet seat assembly and more particularly to a toilet seat and a cover therefor, in the latter of which provision -ismadeior the seating accommodation of infants and. children.

It is an object .of thein-vention to provide, a toilet seat assembly having a cover attachment for theusual toilet seat inwhich is provided an opening of smaller size than that of the main .seat. This openingin the cover is disposed at the frontend thereof and a supplementary cover is provided for this opening which may be operated without difficulty by children themselves.

This invention presents an improvementover the toilet seat assemblvdisclosed in my. Patent No. 1,990,869, February 12, 1935.

Itis the object of the invention to provide an improved toilet seat assembly which is fabricated from molded materials to obtain'astructure which is pleasing in appearance and easy to keep clean.

It'is a'further object of the present invention to provide a seat for a child in am'olded cover for a toilet seat with a lid for said'seat which is pivotally connected to the cover by a hinge arrangement which is completely embedded within the body of the molded cover. Aside from'the fact that this supplemental lid requires no hardware, it functions effectively as a back rest for the child in one position, and as a smooth and finished closure for the opening in the toilet seat cover in the other position.

Other objects and purposes will appear from the detailed description of the invention following hereinafter, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a plan view of the arrangement in accordance with the present invention;

As shown in detail in Fig. 3, the rear part of lid 9 is formed with generally rectangular arms or projections II and II which engage in corresponding recesses l3 and I3, respectively, in the cover 1. Transverse pintles l2 extend through arm projection H, whiletransverse pintles l2? extend through arm II' and these pintles are adapted to be slid into the pairs of grooves 14 and M, respectively, whereupon the pairs of splines l5 and I5 are inserted into the grooves in back of the pintles. Preferably each pair of pintles is J formed of a cylindrical metal pin which becomes embedded in the respective arm in the course of the molding operation. When the cover is made of plastic material, a slight coating of solvent for thespecific plastic of which the cover 1 and the splines are formed, serves to adhesively unite the splines into the grooves to provide a secure backingfor the pintles, as shown in Fig. 5. Preferably, the ends I6 and I6 of the grooves l4 and M, as well as the ends I! and ll of the splines I5 and I5, respectively, are formed of semi-cylindrical contour to provide a close seating of the cylindrical pintles l2 and I2.

As shown in Fig. 4, a groove l9 in the rear face of the lid 9 permits clearance of the lid as the same is rotated from its position in the plane of the cover 1 to a position transverse thereto as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, in which position the lid serves as a back rest for the child. In this position, the top surfaces of the arms II and H strike against the rearmost edges or bases l3a of the recesses l3 and [3 to act as a limiting stop for the lid in its open position as shown in Fig. 2, or in dotted lines in Fig. 4.

In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the seat 1 and supplemental lid 9 are formed of the same molded metal or plastic material, but if desired, each of these parts may be made of different materials or of difierent colored plas' tics, depending upon the ornamental and struc- 1 should be understood that I do not limit my in vention thereto, since various modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my inven- "tion, the scope of which is set forth in the annexed claims.

I claim:

I 1. A cover for a toilet seat formed of a molded material and provided with an opening therein for'accommodating the seating of a child there- 'over, a supplemental lid for said cover opening 'alsq form-ed of molded material, and hinge means for pivotally connecting said lid tosai'd cover comprising a pair of projections extending from the rear of saidlid engaging a pair of correspondingrrecesses in said cover, pintles extending transver'sely from said projections and adapted to be fitted within grooves in the lateral walls of said recesses and backed with splines conforming to said grooves, whereby'said pintles are completely embedded within said cover.

A cover for a toilet seat formed of a molded plastic material and provided with an opening therein for accommodatingthe seating of a child thereover, a supplemental lid of molded plastic material for said cover opening, and'hingemeans for pivotally' mounting said lid comprising a pair r Number of projections extending from the rear of said lid engaging a pair of corresponding recesses in said cover, cylindrical pintles extending transversely from said projections and adapted to be fitted within grooves in the lateral walls of said recesses and backed with splines conforming to said grooves, whereby said pintles are completely embedded Within said cover, the ends of said grooves therein for accommodating the seating of a child thereover, and a supplemental lid of molded plastic material for said cover opening, and hinge means for pivotally connecting said lid to said cover comprising a pair of projections extending from the rear of said lid engaging a pair of corresponding recesses in said cover, pintles extending transversely from said projections'and adapted to be fitted within grooves in the lateral walls of said recesses and backed with splines conforming to said grooves, whereby said pintles are completely embedded within said cover, the top surfaces of said projections adapted to strike against the bases of the recesses in said cover in the raised position of said lid to provide a back-rest for the child.
