FLEXIBLE POCKET RECEPTACLE Filed Nov. 8, 1946 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 BY (26 2 g ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 18, 1949 2,459,218 FLEXIBLE POCKET RECEPTACLE I Donald WgCorey, Springfield, Mass, assignor to Burton, incorporated, Springfield, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts v Application November 8, 1946, Serial No. 708,777
2 Claims. (Cl. 150- 37) This invention relates to an improvement in coin purses, formed of leather or similar flexible material.
One object of the invention is to provide a construction which may be folded up from a single blank which preferably is cut in a single piece and which requires no stitching.
' Another object is to provide a purse the parts of which when folded up are held in position by one element of the closure fastening means.
A further object is to provide a purse of the above character which may also include 2. capacity for carrying keys.
Other and further objects will be made apparent in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings which show two illustrative embodiments of my invention,
7 Fig. 1 shows a blank from which a purse embodying the invention may be folded up; i
Figs. 2 and 3 show successive steps in the folding operation;
Fig. 4 shows the completed purse, in open position;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 shows a modified form of blank from which a purse having key carrying capacity may be folded up;
Fig. 7 shows an intermediate folding step;
Fig. 8 shows the completed purse in open position and with the keys in place; and
Fig. 9 shows the completed key carrying purse closed. 7
Referring to the drawings the blank, generally indicated at I is formed to provide a rear wall 2 and inner front wall members 3 which are integrally connected one to each side edge of the rear wall by triangular gusset members 4. An outer front wall member 5 extends from the bottom edge of the rear Wall, the member 5 being provided with a flap extension 5. A closure flap 1 extends from the upper edge of rear wall 2.
In forming the purse the inner front wall members 3, are folded over on the rear wall, as shown in Fig. 2, their edge portions overlapping as indicated at 8, the gussets 4 being infolded as indicated in dotted lines in said figure and in full lines in Fig. 5. Outer front wall member 5 is then folded onto the members 3 as shown in Fig. 3 and flap 6 is folded inwardly of the coin compartment of the purse as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
One or both of the gussets l'may be omitted if desired but at least one gusset is preferable to increase the capacity of the purse.
The purse elements are held together by a sinill gle rivet or other fastening means extending through flap 6, the overlapped portions 8 of the inner wall members 3 and outer member 5. Preferably and as shown the rivet takes the form of the post element -9 of a conventional glove type fastener. The socket element ill of the glove fastener is riveted to closure flap "I in position to engage post element =9 to releasably hold the purse closed when flap I is folded over onto the outer wall of the purse.
To facilitate the riveting operation and assure that the parts are in proper relation at the time the rivet is upset the parts 3, 5 and 6, may be provided, prior to the folding operations, with rivet receiving openings II positioned to be aligned with each other when the parts are in properly folded position. The closure flap may at the same time be provided with an opening I2 to receive and properly position the socket element II] of the fastener.
It is frequently desired to carry one or more keys with a purse, either for general use or as duplicate spares for important keys, such as house or car keys, usually carried in a key case. To meet this need the blank of Figure 1 may be modified, as shown in Fig. 6, by the provision of openings I3 in the outer wall member 5 and the addition of wing members M extending from the sides of member 5. The wing members are folded into overlapping relation on the rear face of member 5 as shown in Fig. 7 so that when the folding of the parts is completed as previously described, and shown in Fig. 8, the wings I 4 are held, by the fastener rivet 9, between the outer member 5 and inner members 3. The wing members I4 may be formed with rivet receiving openings I5 which when the wing members are folded into proper position register with each other and with the rivet openings II in the other members.
Keys It may be inserted through openings I3 as shown in Fig. 8, with the heads outwardly of the opening and the key shanks held between the outer Wall member 5 and the wing members I4. The keys are then carried without interfering with the contents of the coin compartment of the purse. The openings I3 are so positioned that the key heads are covered and held in place by closure flap 1 when the latter is in closing position with fastener element Ill releasably engaging element 9 as shown in Fig. 9.
The purse construction of my present invention has a special advantage when used in the purse-billfold combinations shown in Buxton Patent No. 2,319,110, issued May 11, 1943, or in the copending application of Broughton Serial No. 577,789, now abandoned, since it gives an added emergency ke'y capacity to such billfolds, the keys being completely concealed and out of the way in the normal use of the purse as part of such a billfold.
While one advantage of my present construction is the fact that it can be made from a blank in which the members are integrally connected together, the blank may if desired be made up by connecting the several members by stitched or cemented seams, the members being folded into of the rear Wall and folded in-superposed 'relation on the inner members, a flap member extending from the upper edge of the outer member and folded downwardly between the rear wall and the inner members of the front wall, a fastener element extending through said flap member, the overlapping portions of the inner members and said outer member to rivet said members together, one of the front wall members being provided with an opening giving access to the space between the front wall members for the insertion of keys, a closure flap extending from the upper edge of the rear wall and foldable over the front wall to close the compartment between the-rear and front walls, and a fastener element carried by said closure fiap and releasablygengageable with the first mentioned fastener element when the closure flap is in purse closing position.
2. A purse which comprises a rear wall, a front of the purse, to
vedge of said outer member and folded into overlapping relation on the inner face o f said outer memben' said-outer member and "fig members being folded in superposedr'elation on the inner members, a flap member extending from the upper edge of the outer membe'i iand folded downwardly between the rear wall-"a d the inner members of the front wall, a fast'ner element extending through said flap memb the overlapping'portions of the inner memb' 's, the overlapping portions of the wing members and said outer member to rivet said members together, said outer member being formed 'with openings for the insertion of keys between the: wing members and the outer member, a closure flapeX- tending from the "upper'*edg'e' or thereai"*wall andfoldableover' thefr'ontwall to closethdcom partment between therear and front walls"and to cover said openings, and a' fastener'e'lexn'ent carried by said closure flap andreleasably gageable with the" first mentioned fastener" e ment when the closure flap isin closing position:
