In gluing machines of the character widely in useat the presenttime, the adjusting means tor the doctor roll is 'so located that it is often very difiicult to reach and adjust. Moreover, such adjusting means is often so positioned and arranged that its parts are exposed to the glue and soon become glue-covered, thus rendering the operation of the adjusting device diflicult, if not impossible, with the result that such adjusting devices require repeated cleaning and constant care.
The present invention contemplates the provision of an adjusting device so arranged in respect to the doctor roll that the device is readily and conveniently'availalole for manipulation and adjustment, whenever such adjustment is required. It further contemplates the provision of an adjusting device of this character so 'con structed that its movable or operating parts 'are enclosed in a suitable protective and enclosing housing, thus isolating them from the glueand eliminating the need for repeated cleaning of the adjusting means.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a simple, easily constructed, and sturdy device of this kind by which accurate adjustment of the doctor roll relative to the glue roll may be readily had by the mere turning of an adjustment screw that is conveniently located and readily operated.
These and other objects are attained by the invention, a more particular description of which will hereinafter appear and be set forth in the claims appended hereto.

Surrounding the stem I 5 is a coil spring 22,
having one end bearing against the guide block I6 and its other end bearing against a washer 23 resting against a pair of spaced rib portions 24 projecting inwardly from the side walls 28 and 2'! of the housing and between which the stem 15 is slidable. This arrangement is such that the coil spring 22 holds the guide block I'6 in contact with the inner end of the adjusting screw I 8 so that when the adjusting screw I8 is unthreaded, the spring will tend to draw the doctor roll I away from the glue roll 2 to the extent permitted by the screw I8. When the adjusting screw is threaded inwardly, or toward the guide block I6, its end operative against the inclined end ll of the guide block I6, will force the stem 2 I5 toward the right, to thus move the doctor roll I closer to the periphery of the glue roll 2. It will thus be obvious that by manually adjusting the screw I8, the doctor roll I can be moved to or from the glue roll 2'to the required extent to L control the thickness of the layer or coating of glue carried and applied by theglue roll.

The result of this arrangement is that the adjusting apparatus is always maintained in a clean and oper ative condition and seldom, if ever, requires dismantling for cleaning. Attention is also directed to the fact that the adjusting means arises from the top of the machine, and the head of the adjusting screw I 8 is fully exposed and readily manually operative so that the adjustment of the doctor roll is simplicity itself. If desired, the exposed face of the projection 2I can be calibrated or graduated and the screw provided with a pointer or indicator so that repeated desired adjustment of the doctor roll can be readily secured by merely turning it to the required designations.
It will be apparent that while I have described the improved adjusting means for use in connection with a certain type of gluing machine it may readily, and with very slight modification, be applied to many types now known to the trade. Such modifications as are required to secure an application of the device to various types of machines are contemplated as being within the scope of the present invention and within the claims appended hereto.
What I claim is:
l..In a gluing machine, a. housing provided with an elongated recess in its under face, a part of said recess being open at the sides, a block slidable in the last-mentioned part of the recess, a stem projecting from the block, a spring surrounding the stem, an abutment in the recess against which one end of the spring rests, a head on one end of the stem, an adjustment screw 4 threaded through a part of the housing and operative against said head to thereby shift the stem axially against the pressure of the spring, the second end of the spring bearing against the head, and a doctor roll having one end of its shaft mounted in the block.
2. In a gluing machine as provided for in claim 1, wherein the abutment consists of spaced ribs on the side walls of the housing within the re cess; the head on the stem has an angular surface against which one end of the adjustment screw contacts, and the adjustment screw extends slantingly through a threaded passage extending through the housing.

In a gluing machine, a base, an elongated housing member having a recessed under side directed toward the base, said housing member being secured to the base, a bearing block located in the recess in the housing member and confined between said housing member and the base, a doctor roll provided with a shaft having an end portion carried by the block, an extension carried by the block, and a threaded adjusting screw carried by the housing member and operative against said extension to move the block in one direction, and spring means tending to move the block in an opposite direction to an extent permitted by the adjusting screw.
4. In a gluing machine, a glue roll, a doctor roll adapted to be moved to and from the glue roll, means for moving said doctor roll toward the glue roll comprising an adjusting screw, supporting means for the doctor roll, a stem carried by said supporting means and having a head at one end against which the adjusting screw is operative, said screw being independent of the stern and a spring tending to hold the stem in contact with the adjusting screw.
5. 1m a gluing machine, a supporting surface, a housing having a recessed under face secured to said surface with the recessed face disposed against the surface, a bearing block confined in the recessed under face and between said face and the supporting surface, said bearing block being slidably mounted, a doctor roll having a shaft mounted in said bearing block, a boss secured to a face of said block, a stem having an end secured in said boss, a guide block, secured to the other end of the stem, said guide block having an inclined face, an adjustment screw threadably and slantingly extending through the housing and having an end entering the recess in the housing and bearing against the inclined face on the guide block, a coil spring surrounding the stem and having one end bearing against the guide block and tending to hold said guide block against the adjustment screw, and stop means in the recess serving as an abutment for the opposite end of the coil spring.
