In therv accompanying... drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a side.. elevatiqnof. thedmd..` set up` for use, the .handle being broken away. r
Figure 2 is an elevation, of the back end thereof.
Figure 3'is-a top plan-view.-
Figure 4 is a section on lined-4, Figureul.'l Figure 5fis' a viewshowinggtheghod collapsed.
Figure 6y is an enlargedYseCtionethrouglavapor tion of the-hod taken on thealine-.iB-G, Figur-1522. Figure '7 is a perspective view of one of the reenforcing frames of the hod.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, i and 2 designate bottom strips which are substantially wedge-shaped in cross-section and formed with depending flanges 3. These strips are so proportioned that when they are pressedtogether along their inner faces, their top faces 4 will be alined substantially at rightangles to the meeting faces of the strips, with both the inner and top faces meeting along a line drawn longitudinally through the center ofy t hod. A strip of soft material such as rubber hasbeen indicated at 5 and is seated in opposed grooves 6 within the strips I and 2, This strip is removably mounted in one of the grooves but cementedor otherwise secured in the other groove so that when the members are moved apart, the strip will pull out of one of the grooves as shown particularly in Figure 5.
When the strips I and 2 are in Contact with each other as shown for example in Figures 2 and 4, their outer sides diverge upwardly.` as indicated at I and to each of these diverging sides 'Iv is ,rmlysseeured-.tthey'bottoniportionfoffrgone `of thev side-boards 8 of the hod: Eachrside-board cambiav ofcihe fzu'sllalL;.configLuration.;`

A` foldable, end:boardV is'. .prcwrdedY 4.between the side-llmard-` .8 .andconsists :of.segmental. sections- I1 .hingedly connected. along their inner or.y meety ing edges as indicated at I8, the hinge being so located that these segments can fold inwardly between the side-boards. Additional hinges I9 `connect the outer sides of the segments I1 with the respective side-boards and when the segments I1 are alined, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, they bear outwardly against the stop flanges I5. For sealing purposes strips y20 of soft material such as rubber can be seated in the segments I1 so as to press against the'top flanges as shown particularly in Figure 6.
A forked plate 2| is secured to the outer side of each side-board 8, each plate being extended upwardly from a jaw 22 which extends under the adjacent flange 3. From the jaws are extended stem sections 23 and 24 which, when brought toother. This will be plainly apparentby referring to Figure 4. f y
A shoulder yrest or pad in theiformbf a block'v 28 is hingedly connected, as at 29, to one of the anges 3 and is so positioned that when the flanges are pressed together as shown in Figures l i 2 and 4, this block can ybe extended ,under both anges and can be secured detachably in proper position by means of a springcatch 29 engaging rib 36 on the other ange 3 as shown in Figure `2,.
ate to hold the flanges together until the sleeve 21 has been screwed onto thesplit stem made up' of the parts 23 and 24.
When the hod` is not in use the two segments l1 are folded together between the side-boards 8 and said side-boards are swung toward each other as' shown in Figure 5. 'At this time the strips i and 2 are disposed along diverging lines with thestem sections 23 and 24 likewise diverging as shown in Figure-5. Thus the hod can be made into a compact bundle and can be conveniently carried'from place to place in a conveyance.
When it is desired tovset up the hod for use, the sections 23 and 24 are swung toward leachother and the segments l1 arelikewise swung outwardly so as to press against the sealing stripsA 28 and come into alinement with each other. The
block 28 is then snapped into1 the position shownv in Figure 2 so as to hold the anges 3 in contact in a preliminary locking arrangement, and thereafter the sleeve 21 is screwed onto thecontacting stem sections 23 and 24, thereby securely holding the parts of the hod assembled in position to carry a load. By providing the backing strips 5 and 20 it is possible to use the hodnot only for carry'- ing bricks and other solids but also for carrying mortar and other semifluid material.
It will be noted that the structure is very simple and compact and will not readilyget out Iof order. It is to be further noted that the weight of the load in the hod, pressing outwardly against the sectional end board, itself assists in making more 4 tight the sealing engagement between the end board and stop anges. Further, any tendency of the load to press outwardly against the side boards only results in bringing into tighter engagement the bottom strips carrying the sealing means 6.
What is claimed is:
A hod including hingedly connected bottom strips, wedge-shaped in cross section, normally contacting along their inner faces along a line drawn longitudinally through the center of the hod, andnormally diverging upwardly along their .outer sides, the upper faces thereof normally meeting along asid center line whereby to form a flat bottom, there being opposed grooves formed in the innerufaces and spaced from the upper faces,l a'sealing means mounted in one of the i grooves;4 and proportioned to be received in the y, j v opposite groove, depending flanges on the strips When the block is thus positioned, it will oper;
' extending the length thereof and proportioned to normally engage each other along said center line, a shoulder' rest hinged to one of the flanges, a catch 'means hinged to the shoulder' rest, for locking-engagement with the hinge, whereby to provide a preliminary lock for the bottom strips, side'boards secured to the outer sides of the strips, reinforcing frames respectively connected to the in n'ersides of the respective side boards, and to the upper faces of the bottom strips, stop flanges Vat one end of the reinforcing frames, hingedly connected segmental end sections, constituting an end board, sealably engageable by the stop flanges, hinge connections between the respective end vsections and side boards, jaws xedlyconnected to the respective side boards and proportioned to lockingly embrace the depending anges,ste1n sections rigid with the jaws and 'engageable with each other to form a sectional stem, a handle, and means carried by the handle-adapted to removably connect the handle to the stem.
