To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERNARD M. BUR- DETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roselle, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The present invention has reference, generally, to improvements in hods for carrying bricks and mortar, or the like and, the invention refers more especially to a hod which may be taken apart and folded up, so as to be conveniently packed or carried from place to place, when not in use.

This invention has for its principal object to provide a simple, strong and durable hod for the purpose of carrying bricks and mortar, or the like, when setup for use; but, which may be quickly taken apart and folded up, when not in use, for the purposes of conveniently storing or packing the same, or for conveniently carrying the same from place to place.

A further object of this invention is to provide a hod which may easily be folded, so as to occupy a comparatively small space, so

i as to be capable of being readily placed in a masons tool-bag or kit.

This invention has for its further object to provide a foldable or knock-down hod, for carrying bricks and mortar or the like, which when set up for use is perfectly water-tight, thus providing a foldably constructed hod which is perfectly practical and adapted for the purpose of carrying mortar, plaster, or similar semi-liquid materials, without causing any discomfort to the user thereof, when carrying said semi-liquid material, from the dripping or leakage of moisture from the hod.

A further object of this invention is to pro vide simple, effective, and easily operated locking devices for looking or maintaining the parts of the foldable hod in their set up and operative condition.

Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly set forth will be clearly evident from the following specification.

The present invention consists, primarily,

in the novel construction of foldable hod hereinafter more fully set forth; and, further more, this invention consists in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various parts, all of which will be described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of foldable hod, embodying the principles of the present invention, the same being illustrated set up in its operative position ready for use; Fig. 2 is a rear end-view of the same, a portion of the handle being shown broken away; Fig. 3 is a view looking down into the top of the hod; and, Fig. 4 is a view looking up toward the bottom of the hod. Fig. 5 is alongitudinal vertical section of the foldable hod, as set up in its operative position ready for use Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section taken on line 6-6 in said Fig. 1; and Fig. 7 is also a vertical cross-section, taken on line 77 in said Fig. 1, with the carrier-rod or handle portion omitted from this view. Fig. 8 is a side view of the main body-portion of the hod with the back-board removed, the parts or members of said main-body-portion being represented in their folded or knocked down relation; Fig. 9 is a top-edgeview of the same parts shown in said Fig. 8 and Fig. 10 is an end edge-view thereof. Fig. 11 is a face view of the transverse member or backboard of the hod, detached from the two foldable members of the main body-portion and Fig. 12 is an edge view of the same. Figs. 13 and 14 are views of the separable parts or sections of the carrier-rod or handle in their disconnected or separated relations.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts. I

Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the complete foldable or knock-down hod embodying the principles of the present invention, the same, comprising a side-member or element 2 which is provided at its lower longitudinal edge with a triangularly shaped block or lip 3, suitably secured to the 'said side-member 2 in any desirable manner. Secured to this triangularly shaped block or lip 3 of the said side-member 2, by means of hinges 4, of any suitable or well-known construction member 5.

Secured upon the inner side of the sidemember or section 5, just above the lower edge thereof, in such a position so as to be brought in contact with the outer side of the said triangular block or lip 3 secured to the side member 3, when the said side-members or sections are opened on their hinges 4 to form the receptacle of the 110d, is a strip of rubber, leather or other suitable resilient material 6, extending the length of said side- The purposeof this strip 6 is to form a water-tight joint at the hinged edges of the said side members when the same are opened to prevent any dripping from the receptacle of the hod upon the shoulder of the laborer. Each side-member or section 2 and 5 is also provided upon its lower edge, near the rear end, with blocks 7, which, when the two side-members are opened out to form the receptacle of the hod, are brought together to form a shoulder-rest upon which to support the hod when-carrying bricks, mortar or the like therein.

Centrally disposed and secured upon the outer side of each side-member or section 2 *and 5, by means of bolts and nuts 8, or any other suitable fastening means, are sidestraps 9. The lower ends 10 of said side- -strips 9 extend downwardly below the lines 'of the lower edges of the said side- members 2 and 5 and are bent slightly in an outward direction from the plane of said side- members 2 and 5, so that when the said side members are opened out to form the V- shaped receptacle of the hod, the lower end 10 of said side-straps 9 come together and form a downwardly extending member. Each'side-strap 9 is made half-round or of a semi-circular cross-section, either of tubular or solid stock as may be preferred, so that, when-thelower ends 10 of the said side-straps 9 are brought together, a downwardly extending receiving member or socket of a circular cross-section is the result. This down- 'wardly extending projection, formed by the lower ends 10 of the side-straps 9, is preferably :provided with a screw-thread 11.

This said'screW-thread 16 is adapted to engage with the screw-thread 11 above described, to secure the handle-portion or rod 12 in its operative relation with the side members 2 and 5, when setting up the folding or knock-down hod for use. This handle-portion or rod 12 is provided at its other end with a ferrule 17, secured thereto in any suitable manner, said ferrule 17 being provided with an exterior screw-thread 18. Another handle-portion or rod 19 is provided, which is adapted to be joined to the said handle-portion or rod 12, this handle-portion or rod 19 being also provided atone end with a ferrule 20, said ferrule being formed with an exterior screw-thread 21. In order to secure the two handle portions or rods 12 and 19 together, a union or couplingmember 22, is employed, which is provided at each end with interiorly arranged screwthreads 23, said screw-threads 23 being adapted to engage with the screw- threads 18 and 21 of the respective ferrule 17 and 20, so that the two handle-portions or rods 12 and 19 can be separably connected as clearly shown, to provide the long carrying rod of the hod, as will be clearly evident.

Arranged upon the inner sides, and near the ends of each side- members 2 and 5, is a groove or channel '24, into which can be fitted the edge-portions of a transverse member or back-board 25. This member or back-board 25 closes the rear end of the V- shaped receptacle formed by the opened side-members or sections 2 and 5, and thereby completes the hodf In order to provide a water-tight joint between the said backboard 25 and the said side- members 2 and 5, the said back-board 25 may be provided upon each edge thereof, which enter the groove or channel 24 formedin the sidemembers 2 and 5, with a packing or strip 26 of rubber, leather, or any other suitable, re-

silient material.

Upon the bottom edge of said transverse section or back board is arranged a similar packing or strip 27 of rubber, leather or other suitable material, all arranged to provide a water-tight joint. To further insure a novel positive water-tight joint between the back board 25 and the side- members 2 and 5, the inner side of said back-board 25 may be provided with other strips 28 of rubber, leather or other suitable resilient material arranged upon the said back-board 25 in such a manner, that, when the edge-portions of the back-board are placed in the grooves or channels 24, this strip 28 is forcedagainst the inner sides of the said side- members 2 and 5 near the edge of said grooves or channels 24. One means of securing said strip 28 in its operative position upon the backboard 25, is by means of metallic bindingstrips 29, which are secured to the backboard by nails or screws 30, or any other suitable fastening means.

Upon the rear side of the back-board 25, there is secured in any suitable manner a strip or rib 31 which'is provided with conveniently disposed button-heads 32. Pivotally secured upon each rear-edge of the sidemembers 2 and 5, by means of pivots 32 is a catch or latch-member 33, provided at one end of its free ends with a finger-piece 34 for operating the same, and also provided at the other free end with a cutaway-portion 35 adapted to engage with the button-heads 32 which are secured in the strip or rib 31 of the back-board 25, for firmly locking the back board 25 and each side- member 2 and 5 securely in their operative relation, one with the other, to provide the V-shaped receptacle of the hod. Secured upon each rear edge of the said side- members 2 and 5 are buttonheads 36 with which the catch or latch members 33 are supposed to engage when not in use or when the folding hod is knocked-down or folded.

From the above description it will be clearly evident, that the present invention provides a simple, strong and water-tight foldable or knock-down hod for carrying brick, mortar or the like, which is easily -manipulated or set up, and which, when taken apart and folded, can be readily carried about in a comparatively small package or placed in a masons tool bag or kit.

A foldable or knock-down hod comprising a main body-portion consisting of'a pair of angularly disposed and foldably connected side-members, a transverse end-member detachably connected with said side-members, means connected with said side-members and said transverse member for retaining said members in their opened relation to provide a receiving compartment, consisting of a catch pivoted to each side-member, and fastening buttons on said transverse member with which said catches are adapted to be brought in holding engagement, and a detachable carrier-rod.

2. A foldable or knock-down hod comprising a main body-portion consisting of a pair of angularly disposed and foldably connected side-members, a transverse end-member detachably connected with said side-members, means connected with said side-members and said transverse member for retaining said members in their opened relation to provide a receiving compartment, consisting of a catch pivoted to each side-member, and fastening buttons on said transverse member with which said catches are adapted to be brought'in holding engagement, and a detachable carrier-rod, said rod comprising separably connected handle-portions.

3. A foldable or knock-down hod comprising a main body-portion consisting of a pair of angularly disposed side-members, hinges secured to and connected with the lower marginal edges of said side-members, a trans verse end-member detachably connected with said side-members, means connected with said side-members and said transverse member for retaining said members in their opened relation to provide a receiving compartment, consistingiof a catch pivoted to each side-member, and fastening buttons on said transverse member with which said catches are adapted to be brought in holding engagement, and a detachable carrier-rod.

4. A foldable or knock-down hod comprising a main body-portion consisting of apair of angularly disposed side-members, hinges secured to and connected with the lower marginal edges of said side-members, a transverse end-member detachably connected with said side-members, means connected with said side-members and said transverse member for retaining said members in their opened relation to provide a receiving compartment, consisting of a catch pivoted to each side-member, and fastening buttons on said transverse member with which said catches are adapted to be brought in holding engagement, and a detachable carrierrod, said rod comprising separably connected handle-portions.

5. A foldable or knock-down hod comprising a main body-portion consisting of an angularly disposed side-member, said member having its lower marginal edge chamfered, a triangularly shaped lip located near the lower edge-portion of said side-member, a second side-member having its lower marginal edge 1 chamfered, said second side-member being movably connected with said lip, a trans verse end-member detachably connected with said side-members, packing-strips located at or near the joints formed by the various parts, means connected with said sidemembers, and said transverse member for re-' taining said members in their opened relation to provide a receiving compartment, consisting of catches pivoted to each side-member, and fastening buttons on said transverse member with which said catches are adapted to be brought in holding engagement, and a detachable carrier-rod.

6. A foldable or knock-down hod comprising a main body portion consisting of an angularly disposed side-member, said member having its lower marginal edge chamfered, a triangularly shaped lip located near the lower edge-portion of said side-member, a

second side-member having its lower marginal edge chamfered, said second side-member being movably connected with said'lip, a transverse end-member detachably connected with said side-members, packing-strips located near the joints formed by the various parts, means connected with said side-members, and said transverse member for retaining said members in their opened relation to provide a receiving compartment, consisting of catches pivoted to each side-member, and ing a main body-portion consisting of an anfa-stening buttons on-said transverse member with which said catches are adapted to be brought in, holding engagement, and a detac'ha'b-le carrier-rod, said rod comprising separably connected handle-portions.

7. A foldable or knock-down hod comprising a main body-portion consisting-of an angularly disposed side-member, said member having its lower marginal edge chamfered, a triangularly shaped lip located near the lower edge-portion of said side-member, a second side-member having its lower marginaledge-chamfered, hinges secured to and "connected with said second side-member and said lip, a transverse end-member detachably connected with said side-members, packing strips located near the joints formed by the "various parts, means connected with said side-members and said transverse member for retaining said members in their opened relation to provide a receiving compartment, consisting of catches pivoted to each sidemember, and fastening buttons on said transverse :member with which said catches are adapted to be brought in holding engagement, and a detachable carrier-rod.
