UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BRUNO RICHTER, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
ECKSCARF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,866, dated August 16, 1881.
' Application filed May 21, 1881.
To all whom it may concern p Be it known that I, BRUNO RICHTER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at New York, in the county and State ot New York, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Scarfs, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention consists of a scarf provided with a shield and means to attach it in position, and with a flap attached along the scarffront at or near a longitudinal central portion thereof, said iiap being capable of turning or swinging on its point of attachment from one portion ofthe scarf-front to another, for changing the appearance ot the same.
In the upper part or" the reversible flap is secured a strip of soft sheet metal or other equivalent iiexible and non-elastic material, so that, when the flap is reversed, by slightly bending the iiexible strip, the upper edge of the reversing-ap can be brought to lie liat upon the part below.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a face view of my scarf when the reversible tlap is turned to the right. Fig. 2 is a transverse section in the plane :r rv, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a face view when the reversible tlap is turned to the left. Fig. 4 is a section ofthe reversible iiap in the plane y y, Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is a face view of the upper part ot the reversible Hap, partly in section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.'
In the drawings, the letter A designates the front of my scarf, and B is the neck-band, both the front and the neck-band being connected to the shield C in the usual way.
D is the reversible liap, which corresponds in shape to one-halt' ot' the front, and is secured at its inner edge, a, to the center-line of said front, so that it can be turned down either to the right or to the left, the position lo the right being shown in full lines in Fig. 2, and the position to the left in dotted lines.
In the upper part ot' the reversible tlap is secured a strip, b, ot" soft sheet metal or other equivalent flexible and non-elastic material, said strip being placed in an oblique position, as shown in Fig. 5, and extending into the upper corner, c, of the reversible flap. By bending this metallic strip slightly in one or in the other direction, the. upper corner, c, of the Vreversible liap is caused to lie snugly upon (No model.)
the parts below, and said corner is readily retained by the shirt-collar or by the vest.
By means of my reversible ap a double scarf is obtained. For instance, it the righthand half ot' the front is covered with black silk and the left-hand half with blue silk, and it' the reversible flap is covered with black silk on the right-hand side and with blue silk on the left-hand side, the front ofthe scart' looks blue it` the reversible tlap is turned to the right, as shown in Fig. 1, and a black front is produced by turning the reversible Hap to the lett, as shown in Fig. 3. If the entire frontis covered with one color and both sides of the rcversible flap with the same color, the scart' can be worn until one side is soiled and by reversing the flap a new and clean frontis obtained.
The neekband may also be covered with dil'erent colorsfor insta-nce, with black on one side and blue on the other-and it can easily be attached to the shield, so that itean be reversed and lits exposed face be made to correspond in color to the front.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a scarf-front provided with a neckband for attaching itinplaee, ot' a flap having one edge attached at or near a central longitudinal portion of said scartfront, and adapted to turn on its point ot attachment from one portion of the searfront to another for changing the appearance ofthe saine, substantially as described. i
2. A scarf-front provided with a shield and means to attach it in position, and with aiiap having one edge attached at or near a central longitudinal portion ot' the scarf -front, and adapted to turn on its point of attachment from one portion of the scarf-front to another t'or changing the appearance of the same, substantially as described.
SoV
3. The combination, with the reversible ilap D and scarf-front A, of a strip, b, ot a flexible and non-elastic material secured in the tlap, substantially as and for the purpose svt forth. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence otl two subscribing witnesses.
