Description

Z. T. BLAGKWELL.
CLUTCH WHEEL.
No. 245,769. Patented Aug. 16,1881.
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
Z ADOK T. BLAGKWELL, OF GARRINGTON, MISSOURI.
CLUTCH-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,769, dated August 16, 1881.
Application filed June 23, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZADOK T. BLAOKWELL, of Carrington, in the county of Oallaway and State of Missouri, haveinvented an Improved Clutch Wheel, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to. provide a new pulley-wheel for rope transmission, which wheel is so constructed that the rope cannot slip thereon.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of my improved elutchwheel. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the clutches.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A series of pairs of clutches, A, are pivoted to the ends of strips B on the sides of a wheel, 0, or the lower ends of these clutches are piv oted in short notches or recesses in the edge of the wheel. The inner or adjoining edges shown in Fig. 2.
belt F passes around the wheel 0 and rests in between the clutches A A, and on the shoulders E or directly above them. It the rope F presses on the shoulders E, the two jaws are forced together and the rope is jammed in between the edges of the clutches and held by the same. As soon as the pressure of the rope on the shoulders E ceases the clutches can be easily separated and the rope can pass from between them. It is evident that the rope cannot slip, and thus all the friction is avoided which is produced when a rope is coiled around a drum several times to avoid slipping, as has been customary heretofore. The lower ends of the clutches strike against the shoulders of the wheel or of the blocks or arms to which they are pivoted to prevent them from spreadin g too far.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1n aclutch-wheel, the clutchesA, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, with shoulders E and a recess, D, as and for the purpose set forth.
ZADOK T. BLAOKWELL.
