Patented Dec. 7, 1948 1 1 UNITED s TATES PATENT OFElC-E I CALF FEEDER Carroll I. Young, Westminster, Md.
Application August 9, 1946, Serial No. 689,612 3 Claims. (01. 11941) This invention relates to a calf feeder and more particularly to a device for supporting a milkcontaining bottle on one side of a partition or Wall where a calf, at the opposite side of the wall.
.may reach a nipple attached to the bottle and thus feed himself.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is of unitary structure so that it may be readily secured to a partition, door or the equivalent, of a stall or other calf-enclosure.
Another object is to supply a calf-feeder including a bottle rack detachably connected to a base designed to be attached to a vertical wall-like support by means of screws or similar fastening means.
A further object is to furnish a calf-feeder including a hinged bottle rack and latching means for fastening an end thereof to the base, to facilitate the insertion and removal of a bottle.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the calf-feeder with a milk bottle supported thereby.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the closure member in closed position.
v Fig. 3 is a similar view with the closure member in open position.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view.
Fig. 5 is a rear elevation.
Referring to the drawings, 6 designates a walllike base provided With apertures I at the corners thereof, for the reception of screws or the like, employed in securing it to a partition, door, etc., of a calf-enclosure or stall.
The base has a doorway 8 to register with a hole cut in said partition or door. A closure member 9 formed of any suitable material, such as stiff sheet metal, has its lower edge hingedly connected to the lower portion of the base by means of a hinge Hi having a removable pintle H, to allow the closure member to be readily detached from the base when not in use.
The closure member has a concave-convex medial portion I2 which normally projects through the doorway 8 and includes an inclined shelf is provided with an orifice I4 to receive the neck of a milk bottle IS.
A lip 16 projects upwardly from the closure member and cooperates with the bolt I! of a latch it used to secure the closure member in closed position.
Legs l9 are fixed to the shelf 13 and extend 2 upwardly at one side of the base, and they are rigidly connected at their upper ends by a yoke 20. The parts [9 and 20 form a bottle cage or bracket, and such parts are preferably covered with resilient rubber or the like to protect the bottle.
In use, the handle 2| of the latch is turned to release the lip l6 and allow the cage to move into a horizontal position (Fig. 3) for the reception of the bottle. Then the closure member is returned to closed position (Fig. 2) and the lip is secured by the latch. In this position, a calf at the side of the base opposite to that where the cage is located, may readily feed from the bottle. When feeding is completed, the bottle is withdrawn from the cage.
From the foregoing, it may be seen that by cutting a hole in a door or stall partition, similar in dimensions to the hole or doorway 8, the assembly can be readily attached by means of screws or the like to said door or partition, so that an operator at one side thereof may take care of the feeding of a calf at the opposite side.
While I have disclosed what I now consider to be a preferred embodiment of the invention in such manner that the same may be readily understood by those skilled in the art, I am aware that changes may be made in the details disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the following claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a wall-like base having a doorway therein, a closure member hingedly connected at its lower end to the base and having a portion adapted to project through the doorway, said projecting portion constituting an inclined shelf having a bottle neck-receiving aperture, a bottle cage secured to the projecting portion of the closure member, and means for latching the upper end of the closure member to the base for confining the bottle within the cage.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1, in which the cage comprises spaced legs having their lower ends fixed to the shelf, and a yoke securing the upper ends of the legs to one another.
3. A device of the character described comprising a Wall-like base having a doorway therein, a closure member having a lower end portion hingedly connected to the base at the lower end of the doorway, said closure member having a concavo-convex medial portion extending through the doorway and provided with an inclined shelf having a bottle neck-receiving aperture, latching means secured to the base at the upper end of the doorway for detachably securing the upper end portion of the closure member to the base, and a bottle cage carried by the closure member and positioned at one side of the base.
