UNITED STATES PATENTl OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a device for dispensing ketchup from conventional ketchup bottles.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a dispensing device for use in connection with a ketchup bottle to efliciently dispense the ketchup therefrom.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a dispensing apparatus adapted for mounting on a conventional bottle.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a dispensing device of simple construction and capable of economic manufacture.
The ketchup dispenser shown and described herein has been designed to provide a mechanism which may be conveniently employed in dispensing the contents of a ketchup bottle. It is well known that ketchup and similar tomato base sauces are commonly packaged in bottles, the neck portions of which are relatively small in comparison with the area comprising the bottle itself. It is also well known that the various tomato base sauces, such as ketchup and chili sauce, thu-s packed are frequently of a relatively thick Consistency which makes it diflicult to pour the same from the bottles in which they are packed. The present invention relates to a device which can be readily attached to a conventional ketchup bottle, for example, which operation will serve to forcefully remove the contents of the bottle therefrom. The ketchup dispensing` device is so formed that it may be readily disassembled for Cleaning and is provided with a convenient handle depending along one side of the bottle so that when the bottle is grasped in one hand by the user and the thumb used to move the handle this will cause the dispenser to deliver ketchup or chili sauce from the bottle upon which it is positioned.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of part-s and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in cross section illustrating the ketchup bottle with the ketchup dispenser in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the ketchup bottle and dispenser illustrated in Figure 1, the bottle being turned 90 degrees.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the ketchup bottle and dispenser illustrated in Figure 1 illustrating the same with a cap portion thereof removed.
By referring to the drawings and Figure 1 in particular it will be seen that a conventional ketchup bottle is indicated by the numeral I0 and that its relatively narrow neck portion is indicated by the numeral II. A dispensing device consisting of a body member I2 has been positioned on the neck I I of the ketchup bottle I0 by means of a pair of annular depending flanges I3 and I4, the depending circular ange I`3 being of a size to t about the exterior of the bottle neck II and the depending annular ange I4 being of a size capable of positioning within the bottle neck II. A anged tubular gasket I5 is positioned within the area defined by the annular depending flanges I3 and I4 and serves to form a tight seal between the annular depending ange Ill and the interior of the neck I l of the ketchup bottle I0, The flanged tubular gasket I5 is formed with an area of increased diameter adjacent its lowermost end, which area, of ring-like formation, serves to register with the interior of the bottle I0 immediately below the neck portion i I thereof and effectively holds the dispenser body IZ on the neck portion II of the bottle I0. The interior of the depending annular iiange I4 provides a channel for the passageway of the ketchup or chili sauce in the bottle Il) and this passageway is indicated in Figure 1 by the numeral I6. A horizontally positioned passageway I'I communicates with the passageway I6 at its uppermost end. It will be observed that a screw type conveyor I8 isv positioned in the passageway I6 in a manner so that it registers therewith and so that upon its being rotated the ketchup or chili sauce in the bottle Ill will be forcefully moved through the passageway Iii and delivered by the dispenser through the passageway I'I. Means for imparting rotating motion to the screw type conveyor I8 are provided and it will be observed by referring to Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings that the uppermost end of the screw type conveyor I8 passes through a suitable gland I9 in the body I2 and terminates above the uppermost surface thereof and beneath a removable cap 2U. A pinion gear 2l is removably positioned on the uppermost end of the screw type conveyor I'8 by means of a nut 22 and the pinion gear ZI is adapted to be rotated by means of an appropriately formed rack 23 which is slidably positioned adjacent the pinion gear ZI by means of a tensioning and positioning spring 24, one end of which is formed with a channel 25 in which the rack 23 is adapted to slide and the other end of which is formed with an eye 26 so that it can be attached to the body I2 by means of a screw 21. A pin 28 in the body I2 serves to position the spring 24 in appropriate operating position so that it in turn holds the rack 23 in appropriate operating position with 'respect to the gear 2I. The rack 23 is loosely pivoted toa'ilever y29 bymeansof a pivot pin 30 and the lever 29 is pivoted by means of a pivot pin 3| to an extension formed on the body member I2 of the dispenser. The opposite end of the lever 29 is loosely pivoted by means of a pivot pin 32 to the uppermost end of a handle 331 which is also pivoted by means of a pin 34 to-an extension formed on the body member I2. The lowermost end of the handle 33 extends downwardly alongside the bottle I0 to a position convenient to the thumb location of the users hand. A spring 35 is affixed to the interior of the handle 33 and engages th'e side of. the bottle I0 and serves to return the vhandle to a' position away from the bottle 'I'D, such position being'indicated in broken lines in Figure l.
' Still' referring to Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings, it .will be observed that the rack 23 and the pinion igearZI' are so 'formed' that' the rack 23 will slide over'the pinionY gear 2| at such time as the spring 35 returns the handle '33 to a position away fro'rnithe .bottle IU, and that at such time as the handle 33 ismoved toward the bottle, as b y the thumb ofthe user's hand, the rack 23 will engage the pinion geari2l, rotate the same and hence rotate the screw' type conveyor I8 in the bottle. In order'thaitfthe rack 23 and the pinion gear'2l' maybe enclosed, theA cap 20 is provided and is removablyV affixed to the body I2 of the dispenser by means of a plurality of bolts 36 which engage threaded openings 31 in the body member I2 of the dispenser.
It `will thus be seen that a .ketchup dispenser has' been disc'losedwhichmay'be conveniently attachedt'o. a ketchup bottle by simply moving the same into engagement with the neck portion thereof and that insuch Position on a ketchup bottle the contents of the bottle may be readily dispensed by the simpleexpedientof moving the handle 33 ofthe 4device which causes the screw type conveyor I8 thereof to forcibly eject the contents of the bottle. through the passageways I6 andl I1` It will be observe'dlthat the exterior portion of the'body member I'2.s11rrounding the passageway I1 `hasbeen extended so as to form a delivery spigot. It will thus beseenthat a practical .and efficient' ketchupndispenser has been therewith, and a screw type conveyor rotatabl positioned in said passageway and a rack an pinionAA gear for imparting movement to said screwf-typeconveyor, and a handle pivotally connected to said rack for imparting movement thereto; a springv in said handle engaging said bottle .and normally urging said handle away therefrom.
2. A. ketchup dispenser consisting of a body member having a pair' of tubular members depending tlerefronnone of said tubular members being resilient and* insertable in the neck of a ketchup bottle, the other'member defining alpassageway within saidv resilient member, a delivery passageway communicating withv the exterior of the said device and with said passageway, means f'or movingketchupthrough the said passageways, said means comprising a screw type conveyor rotatably' pcsitionedfin said passageway, means for motivating the said' screw type conveyor, said means including'a gear on said conveyor shaft anda rack `disposedadjacent thereto, and means for imparting movement to said rack, said means including a 'handle `pivotally connected thereto, and a spring between said bottle and said handle' normally urging'the handle away therefrom.
