JOHN KANE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
AUTOMATIC FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,383, dated August 9, 1881.
Application filed June 6, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN KANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and useful Automatic Fire-Extinguisher, of which the following is a specification.
Hy invention relates to improvements in automatic fire-extinguishers, in which the heat of a burning building acts upon a combustible or explosive cartridge and opens a water-cock to irrigate theinterior ot' the building. I attain this object by a mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the entire machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the complete extinguisher; and Fig. 3 is a top view of the collar, showing the arms in site, two of which are in section.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The thread 0 on the cap A secures the machine to a water pipe or main. This cap Ais secured to a second perforated cap, B, by a thread. The cap A has a socket, h, which receives the head of the valve (1. The cap B has a milled rim, I, by which it is adjusted to regulate the valve 0. This cap B is perforated by a hole, L, through which passes the valverod D, and it admits of a column of water in addition. Theportion or cap B extends through the collar E and rests on the base of the arm G, into which itis screwed. The collarE swings freely about the elongated portion of the cap 13, resting upon the base of the arm G. The portion B is perforated by an opening, L, running longitudinally through it, and opening by the holes 1) into the space M.
The collar E has a hollow center or space, M, and is provided with radiating arms F and F, four in number, which are perforated along their entire length. The extreme tip is closed by a plug, and a slot, d, is cut horizontally in the side of each arm its entire length, for the egress of water. These arms are set so that two of them will have the slot on the outer curve of the arm and the other two will have the slot on the inner curve of the arm, the object of which arrangement is to spread the water more uniformly over any given surface,
(ModeL) the arm having the slot on the greater curve throwing the water to a greater distance, while the arms with the slot on the lesser curve throw the water to a less distance,or near the center of the circle of irrigation.
The arm G has a forked projection, 2, into which is secured the cap end of a metallic cartridge, H. The ball of this cartridge H is perforated with a hole, and is slipped onto the rod I. This rod I is secured to the valve-rod D by a collar, J, and set-screw c.
The mechanism operates as follows: The cap A is screwed into a water-main, which makes a connection between K and the column of water in the main. The metallic cartridge H is then adjusted to the arm G and fitted to the pin I. The head of the valve 1'- is brought up against the valve-seat h h, and the collar J clamped by the setscrew 0, which holds the valve 2' i in contact with the seat h h and prevents the flow of water. When a tire occurs the cartridge H, which is filled with material whichis easily explosive, explodes, which drives the valve-rod D and valve 1' 2' down and opens the watermain K. The water then fills the chamber 0, rushes through L, and emerges through the openingsbinto the spaceM; thence it rushes through a into the hollow arms F and F, and by a reverse pressure sets them rotating, which spreads a spray of water in all directions, irrigating the space beneath it for many feet.
I do not claim the broad principle of a r0 tary automatic fire-extinguisher; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a cap, A, with a cap or plug, B, having a collar, E, provided with hollow arms F and F, an arm, G, carrying a cartridge, H, with a pin, I, and collar J attached to the valve-rod D, all substantially for the purpose and as described.
2. The metallic cartridge H, combined with the arm G, and pin I, and collar J, all for the purpose and as described.
