LAWN-SPRINKLER.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,017, dated September 20, 1892. Application filed November 80,1891. Serial No. 413,659. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS L. RIGBY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Sprinklers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is avertical section of nozzle and coupling, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in sprinkler attachments for hose-pipes; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter specified, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a nozzle pipe or tube, preferably of metal, having acoupling a for attachment to a hose-pipe and shown as bent into approximately 0 shape, terminating at its free end in an inwardly-turned arm I), having an elbow-coupling B, to which the nozzle is connected. The position of the nozzle is shown as about centrally between the arms of the bend and standing at right angles to the plane thereof.
The nozzle 0 comprises the case or shell 0, having a straight cylindric bore and externally threaded at one end for engagement with the coupling B. In this shell or casing is a plug G, which consists of astem or shank exactly centrally therein and having at its inner end a series of radial flanges g, separated from each other by the tapered grooves or channels f. Above these flanges the shank is gradually enlarged or tapered, terminating in a flange or head h, forming an angular shoulder thereon. The flanges or wings g fit closely in the bore of the shell and have sufficient frictional contact therewith to prevent them from being forced out of the nozzle -that is to say, the radial spread of the wings or flanges is only slightly less than the diameter of the interior bore of the nozzle, into which they are driven with considerable force. By the application, however, of a suitable tool the plug may be adjusted in the nozzle so as to regulate the discharge. By reason of this close fit of the wings or flanges it will be apparent that it will be impossible for the plug or stem to get out of center as it is moved up or down in the shell, thus insuring an even discharge at all points. The water admitted between the wings or flanges is discharged around the shank, and, striking against the shoulder formed by the head It, 1s broken up into a fine spray, which is thrown evenly to all sides, and not in a single rlng, several feet distant from the nozzle.
It will be observed that the bend given the pipe, which may be of any suitable shape, forms a base or support for the sprinkler, holding it in upright position. By pulling on the hose or on a cord attached to the sprinkler it may be moved from place to place without necessitating the cutting ofi of the water in order to approach it and move it by the hand.
