10 Claims. I
Th s invention relates to a rotary, liquid piston machine, and more particularly to a rotary compressor using a liquid as a compressing medium. The structural features of the machine herein disclosed, other than the mounting of the external rotor. are described and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 551,509, entitled Compressor, filed August 28, 1944.
One object of the invention lies in an improved mounting for the external rotor of a rotary ma-l chine using a liquid as a compressing medium.
Another obiect of the invention is the provision of a rotary compressor or other machine using a liquid as a compressing medium and having internal and external eccentrically mounted rotors in which the external rotor is so mounted as to permit variation in the amount of eccentricity. Another object of the invention is the provision of a rotary compressor or other machine using a liquid as a compressing medium and having internal and external eccentrically mounted rotors in which the external rotor is resiliently mounted to Vary the eccentricity in accordance with the compressor outlet pressure.
Other objects and features of the invention will it be readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the specification and appended drawing illustrating certain preferred embodiments in which:
end of the stationary structure 4 and a roller bearing 9 in the support 3 is rotatably mounted a drive shaft H carrying an inner rotor l2 having a pair of spaced peripheral annular plates [3 mounted thereof between which extends separator plate I6 dividing the peripheral space between the plate 15 into a large number of indidividual pockets. Each of these pockets has an opening l! in its base communicating in the proper position with the inlet port I8 in the wall Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View of the chamber 6 and with the outlet the Wall of the outlet chamber 1.
Exteriorly of the rotor i2 is eccentrically supported the ou er rotor indicated at 2| and comprising spaced annular plates 22 and 23 connected by the cylindrical portion 24. On the plates 22 and 23 are mounted annuli 25 and 23 forming wells 21 and 28 within which liquid escaping from the interior of the compressor adjacent the outlet is trapped and maintained by centrifugal force to be returned to the compressor adjacent the inlet portion thereof. A liquid supply source is indicated at 29. The rotor 2 las shown in Figures 1 and 2 is rotatbly supported in its position eccentric to the axis of shaft H by means of an endless belt or strap 3! which engages theperiphcry of the cyl nder 24 between the external ends of the plates 22 and 23. The belt 3| extends over an idler pulley 32 supported by bearing 33 upon an arm 34 pivoted at 35 to a fixed part. The opposite end of the arm 34 is connected to the operating piston of a pneumatic cylinder 35, the cylinder being connected in one concept of the invention to the compressor outlet 5 l through constant pressure outlet valve 31. a
By mechanically supporting the rotor 21 by the belt 3|, it is possible to mount a relatively large diameter rotor with a relatively small and inexpensive bearing 33, The direct support of this exterior roller about the other elements of the compressor ordinarily results in a complicated and expensive bearing arrangement while'with the suspension herein disclosed a small and economical bearing may be employed.
Another feature of the invention lies' in the automatic regulation of the output. pressure of the compressor. The outlet of the constant pressure outlet valve 3'! results in aconstant 'force tending to raise the rotor 2|. If the outlet pres sure of the compressor should increase, the reaction force on the rotor tending to move it .toward concentricity will be increasedand the rotor will move downwardly fror'n'the positions of Figures 1 and 2 into a less eccentric position. This decrease in eccentricity decreases the travel of the liquid into the compression chambers of the inner rotor and lowers the output pressure. Since the force tending to move the rotor upwardly is constant the reaction. force. thereagainst .will be maintained constant and accordingly there is an automatic regulation of the output pressure.
In the modification of Figure 3 there has been substituted for the belt 3d a pair of spaced rollers 38 and 39 mounted on.a yoke H carried by the port l9 in engagement with the exterior periphery of motor, and means tor adu'usting said support to trated in con inection with a gas compressor, it Will, of course, be obvious that various features thereof are applicable to engines and other forms of liquid piston machinery and, while certain preferred embodiments of the invention have been specifically disclosed, it is understood that the invention is not limited thereto asmanyvari ations will be readily apparent itothoseslsilled in the art and the invention is to be given its broadest possible interpretation within the terms of the following claims:
