Description

PROTECTING ATTACHMENT FOR HAIR DRIERS Filed Oct. 10, 1946 INVENTOR! Margo 5 Fears Patented Nov. 9, 1948 PROTECTING ATTACHMENT FOR HAIR DRIERS Margo S. Fears, Norfolk, Va., assignor to Alice H. Grabb, Monticello, Ill.
Application October 10, 194.6, Serial No. 702,447
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to an eye and ear protecting device for hair drying machines, and has for its principal object to protect the eyes and ears of the person whose hair is being dried, from the steam or hot moist air, to which such persons are subjected.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein the single figure of the drawing is a perspective view partly in section illustrating the protecting apparatus in use.
In the drawing, 5 designates a conventional hair drying machine. The protecting attachment consists of an annulus made of a light, flexible material such as oiled silk or other waterproof web 6. The upper edge of this annulus is dimensioned to fit over the lower edge of the hair dryer 5 and to be secured thereto in any desired manner. One method of attachment is to provide the upper edge of the annulus with a gathered hem I in which is housed a draw string or elastic tape 8. In like manner the lower edge of the annulus is provided with a gathered hem 9, housing the elastic tape ID. This elastic tape functions to draw the lower edge of the annulus firmly about the head, the hair to be dried being then housed completely in the annulus 6. The steam and moist air released during the drying operation may be discharged from the interior of the flexible annulus 6 through discharge spouts ll. These spouts are formed of the same material as that of the annulus 6 and being sufficiently elongated to discharge the steam or moist air far enough away from the face of the person whose hair is being dried as to insure that such person will not be subjected to the discomfort of being placed in a halo of humid air, during the considerable period which is required for the drying operation.
I am aware of the fact that it has heretofore been proposed to provide a hair drying machine with a depending annular member which member in turn engages about the head of the person whose hair is being dried. However, as far as I am aware, I am the first to provide such an annulus with means for discharging the accumulated steam or hot air at a point so remote from the face as to insure that the area about the eyes and ears will not be subjected to the discharged humid air and wherein the whole structure is of such a very light weight as not to be burdensome upon the head of the user. While I prefer to use elastic members at 8 and I0, it is to be understood that the invention includes within its purview non-elastic draw strings in lieu thereof.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms 01' the spirit of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim A protecting device of the character described comprising an annulus formed of a single thickness of a thin flexible waterproof material, means about the upper edge of the annulus for binding the material of said annulus about the lower end of a hair drying machine, a band about the lower edge of the annulus dimensioned to engage snugly about the forehead and head of a person whose hair is to be dried, an elastic drawing means in the last named band, the fullness of the flexible waterproof material between the upper and the lower edges of the annulus being such that the material may be bowed outwardly, and a plurality of spaced elongated spouts carried directly by and supported wholly by the single wall of the annulus, which spouts open into and discharge moist air from the space within the annulus and said spouts being of such length and being so directed radially outward and being of such rigidity as to discharge the said hot moist air at a point remote from the face of the user.
