WRIGHT HAIR DRIER Filed Aug. 2, 1941 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 A Home Patented Sept. 15, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to hair driers, and an object of the present invention is to provide a hair drier so equipped as to protect the forehead and neck from the heat of the drier while at the same time affording for freedom of movement of the head; and the invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

. Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a hair drier embodying the features of the present invention and illustrating an application of the same.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the drier.

Figure 3 is a'fragmentary detail elevationalthe drier 5 is constructed with a departure from the conventional by being provided adjacent the lower end thereof with a series of circumferentially spaced openings 6, preferably of the shape shown, to permit the escape of excessive or surplus heat.

-Further in accordance with the present invention the dome of the drier 5 adjacent the bottom edge thereof has formed integrally therewith, or otherwise associated therewith, a rigid shield 7 that extends circumjacent the hood of the drier and extends at a suitable angle from the drier so as to direct such escaping heat upwardly and away from the head and face so as to protect the head and face from such heat.

Further in accordance with the present invention a protective shield 8 of fabric or suitable flexible material is secured at one edge 9 thereof to the dome of the heater 5 below the shield i and is adapted, as shown in Figure 1, to fit about the head, being disposed over the forehead and neck of the user so that the forehead and neck are further protected from the heat of the drier, and the possibility of injury to the forehead and neck of the user further materially minimized.

The flexible and fabric shield 8 is split to provide ends 9 and it to facilitate the placing of the shield 8 over the forehead and neck.

When properly positioned the ends a and it of complemental buckle I3 secured, as shownin Fig- I ure 3, at the inner side of the shield 8, the strap l2 being secured at one end thereof to the end In of the shield and the buckle l3 secured at a point inwardly from the end 9.

As shown in Figure 1, when the drier 5 is in v l position on the head of the user and the shield 8 secured in contracted position across the forehead and over the neck and ears, the forehead and neck are protected from the heat of the drier, while at the same time the head of the user is permitted a reasonable amount of freedom of movement.

It is believed that the advantages of a drier embodying the features of the present invention will be had by those skilled in the art without further detailed description.

It will also be understood that while I have herein illustrated and described what is considered to be the preferred embodiment of the invention, I am well aware that in practical fields of application minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as herein claimed.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:

1. In a hair drier of the character described, a dome adapted to fit the head and provided adjacent the lower end thereof with heat-escape openings, a relatively rigid annular shield having its lower edge joined with the outer side of the dome below the openings, and extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom with the upper edge of the shield terminating above the openings to direct the heat emitting from said openings outwardly and away from the head of the user, and a second shield of flexible material adapted to be secured at one edge thereof to the dome at the bottom end of the latter and extending around the dome for disposition over the forehead and across the neck of the user for covering the forehead and neck subjacent the drier to protect the head and neck from the heat of the drier.

2. In a hair drier of the character described, a dome adapted to fit the head and provided adjacent the lower end thereof with heat-escape open ings, a relatively rigid annular shield having its lower edge Joined with the outer side of the dome the shield e are detachably secured together below the openings, and extending upwardly and outwardly therefrom with the upper edge of the shield terminating above the openings to direct the heat emitting from said openings outwardly and away from the head of the user, and a second shield of flexible material adapted to be secured at one edge thereof to the dome at the bottom end of the latter and extending around the dome for disposition over the forehead and across the neck of the user for covering the forehead and neck subjacent the drier to protect the head and neck from the heat of the drier, said last-named shield being split to provide a pair of lapp n and overlapping ends, complemental fastening elements on said ends for securing said ends together, and strap means associated with the flexible shield at said ends and adjacent the lower free edge of the flexible shield for contracting said shield about the head and neck of the user.

3. In a hair drier of the character described, a dome provided adjacent the bottom end thereof with heat-escape openings, and a shield. having its lower edge integral with the dome and 20 extending about said dome adjacent the bottom edge thereof and projecting upwardly and outwardly from said dome in spaced relation to said openings, the upper edge of the shield terminating above said openings.

4. In a hair drier of the character described, a dome, an annular shield of flexible material having its upper edge adapted to be secured to the dome and extending thereabout adjacent the lower edge of the dome to engage and cover the forehead and neck of the user subjacent the drier. to protect said forehead and neck from the heat of the drier, said shield being split vertically to provide a pair of lapping and overlapping ends, said ends provided with complemental fastening elements for securing said ends together, and an adjustable strap connecting the overlappin vertical ends of the shield at its lower edge for contracting the shield about the head of the user.
