This invention relates to a pencil sharpener and more especially to a sharpener which has a stand having a shaft mounted therein, and the stand has an internal gear which meshes with pinions mounted on a pair of cutting rollers mounted laterally of the shaft so' that turning of the shaft impartsrotation to the cutting rollers and the pencil is insertedbetween the cutting rollers to sharpen the same. This type of'sharpen'er is alsoequipped'with a housing surrounding the cutting rollers for catching the shavings from the pencil while it is being sharpened.
It is the purpose of this invention to provide a sharpener, which can be inserted over the cutting rollers after the shaving case has been removed so that by reversely turning the handle which drives the sharpening rollers and driving them in a reverse direction, the rollers will be sharpened over their bevels, that is, the rollers will be turning reversely and will not be engaging the sharpening means in the same manner as they would engage a pencil in a forward cutting motion.

It is an object of this invention to provide a sharpening mechanism adapted to be inserted over the sharpening rollers and having resillient means for holding the same in position and having an abrasive portion be pressed the sharpening rollers by the resillent means, and whereby the sharpening rollers can be driven in a reverse direction for a plurality of times to sharpen the cutting rollers. Then the sharpening mechanism can be removed and the shavings case reinserted and the sharpener is then ready to use with sharpened rollers to provide a very much better sharpening of the pencil than would be possible if the rollers were dull.
It is another object of this invention to provide a sharpening means adapted to be attached over and resiliently held against the sharpening rollers in a pencil sharpener so that by reverse turning of the sharpening rollers, the cutting edges will be sharpened.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Rollers 22 and 23 are rotated by gears 39 and 40 mounted thereon and revolving in internal gear l3.
The above described mechanism is conventional in the above-described type of sharpener, and is only described to show in what manner sharpening mechanism cooperates with t ns type of sharpener. My sharpening mechanism comprises a U-shaped bracket 3%, having legs 34 and 32 joined together by a bottom piece 33 and the legs 3i and 32 have notches and 35 therein, which are adapted to fit over one of the portions H3 or IQ of the shaft 56. To the base portion 33, I secure by any suitable means, such as rivets 36, an elastic band 3?, and on the interior of a portion of this elastic band 1 adhesively or otherwise secure an abrasive member, such as emery cloth 38. The bracket 33, the elastic band 33, and the abrasive member 38 rotate it shaft In use of this invention, the snav casing is removed and the notches 34 and 35 are inserted over either of the portions it or ill and the elastic band 3-1 is distended to cause the 3 abrasive sheet 38 to fit against the cutting rollers 22 and 23.
In normal operation of the pencil sharpener in sharpening a pencil, the handle I! is turned in a counter-clockwise manner in Figure 2, and the cutting rollers 22 and 23 are driven in a clockwise manner in Figure 2 due to their pinions engaging with internal gear l3.
When the sharpening mechanism is placed on the rollers as shown in the drawings, the handle I! is turned in a reverse direction, or a clockwise manner in Figure 2, which drives the cutting rollers backward and causes them to have their sharpened spiral cutting edges driven in a reverse direction to thereby cause the sharpening effect to be properly applied in applying the abrasive action to the top sloping surface of the cutting edges instead of tending to dull them by driving them in the same manner as they would be driven if they were used in sharpening a pencil.
It is thus seen that I have provided a sharpener for the cutting rolls of a pencil sharpener which can be quickly installed for a sharpening operation, and just as quickly removed when the cutting rollers have been properly sharpened.
In the drawings and specification, there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. A sharpening device for cutting rollers of a pencil sharpenercomprising a, stand and an internal gear and a shaft mounted for rotation in said stand, and having a pair of spaced cutting rollers rotatably mounted in the shaft, said cutting rollers having pinions thereon adapted to engage said internal gear to impart rotation to the same, comprising a bracket insertable against said shaft and having resilient means mounted on the bracket, said resilient means being adapted to encircle the cutting rollers and having an abrasive substance thereon and adapted to be held in contact with the surfaces of the cutting rollers by means of said resilient means.
2. A sharpening device for the cutting rollers of a pencil sharpener comprising a frame fixed on a rotatable shaft and having a pair of rotary cutting rollers mounted in the frame and spaced apart from each other, and having means for imparting rotation to the same, comprising an elastic band having an abrasive substance on its side next to the cutting rollers adapted to be placed in contact with the cutting rollers, and means adapted to be disposed between the elastic band and the frame for resiliently holding the abrasive surface in contact with the cutting rollers While they are rotating to sharpen the cutting surfaces of the cutting rollers.
