SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,212, dated August 2, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AMASA C. PooLE, of Boston, in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have'in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofas or Lounges, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.

The back of the lounge or sofa is hinged to the rear side of the seat, so that it may beswung backward into a horizontal position and forward into an upright'position, and devices are arranged in relation thereto for supporting it in its horizontal position and hold in g it in its upright position, and the back cushion has at one end a hinged portion, which, when the back is lowered to its horizontal position, is raised automatically to an inclined position, all as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a lounge constructed according to my invention, the back being in its upright position. Fig. 2 is a partial plan view with the back in a horizontal position. Fig.

3 is an end view with the back in its horizontal position.

In the drawings, A represents a seat supported through a frame, B, on legs O; D, an arm at one end of the seat; and Ea back, having a cushion, E, all, except as hereinafterdescribed, the same as in ordinary lounges.

The frame B under the seat is made of a box form, and the seat is hinged to its rear edge at a, so thatitmay-be raised therefrom, when desired. This box B is provided for the stowin g away of articles of bedding, such as blankets, sheets, &c. The lower edge, 9, of the back E is hinged to the rear edge of the frame B, to be swung backward into a horizontal position. The back, when in a horizontal position, lies at its lower wall, g, against the rear edge, h, of the frame B, and it has near its then outer edge, 7', two legs, k it, one near each end thereof, which legs at one end are hinged to the rear face of the .back, and between their two ends are connected to the seat-box B by rods 1 l, hinged to them and to the rear, h, of the said seat-box, one rod for each leg. These legs support the back at its outer portion from the rear of the seat-frame when it is in a horizontal position, and being connected to the back and seat-box, as aforesaid, they move with the back into the said position of support as the back is swung backward into a horizontal position, and into a position against the back as the back is swung forward into a vertical position.

The rods 1 l firmly brace and hold the legs when supporting the back in its horizontal position, as above described.

The rear face of the back is provided with spring-bolts m, arranged one near each end, and connected together by a common cord, n, passing through guide-eyes 0 to the upper edge of the back. These bolts lie along the length of the back, and when the back is in its vertical position engage the one with a fixed staple, p, on the rear of, the lounge-arm D, and the other with the rod l, connecting one of the supporting-legs k for the back with the seat of the lounge, and thus the back is fastened andheld in its upright position.

To release the back, so thatit may be swung down into a horizontal position, pull on the common cord at, which releases the spring-bolts mand leaves the back free to be swung as desired.

The back cushion, E, at its end toward the arm has a portion, F, of its length hinged to the remaining portion, so that it may be inclined in the direction of the length of the back, when the back is in a horizontal position, to correspond substantially with the inclination of the arm D, and thus with it secure a raised portion across one end of the lounge,

the desirability of which is obvious when the back is swung down into a horizontal position to be used as a bed. G is an arm hinged to rear edge of seatframe B, which arm, when the back is in its upright position, lies between the hinged portion F of the back cushion and the back, and when the back is swung down into a horizontal position goes with it until it is stopped by the abutment of its end g against the rear edge of the frame B, when, by the continued downward movement of the back, such arm G raises the said hinged portion F of the back cushion to the inclination desired, and holds it in such position. i 1 Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ate upon the said portion F to raise the same isto an inclined position substantially as de- 10 The combination, in a sofa or lounge with scribed.
