Description

p 1943- w. A. J. MITCHELL 23448319.
POCKET-TYPE TISSUE CONTAINER Filed Dec. 20, 1944 I I I Inventor Patented Sept 7, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENTOFFICE 2,448,819 rocxa'r-ma'nssua comma William A.- J. Mitchell, Appleton, Wis. Application December 20, 1944, Serial No. 569,05 1
This invention relates to cartons, packets, and equivalent envelope-like packages and containers of different types such as are used for conveniently containing and subsequently dispensing tissues, such as for instance, handkerchiefs and facial wiping tissues, and has reference in particular to the construction of a carton, or the like, in a manner so that tissues folded therein may be conveniently extracted therefrom.
In carrying out the principles of the invention, I have in mind a small envelope-like type of dispensing packet or carton which can be practicably and suitably made for use in coin-controlled vending machines.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive packet for containing a limited number of folded, readily usable tissues, said packet characterized by a relatively small carton, or the like, one of whose comers is readily tearable and then removable and which, when detached, exposes the folded corner-portions of the tissues to permit same to be conveniently grasped and extracted for use, one by one.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like elements throughout the views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a packet constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention, the lower comer-portion being broken away to expose the folded handkerchiefs or tissues on the interior.
Figure 2 is a view showing the manner in which the removable comer-cap is torn off to permit withdrawal of the folded handkerchiefs or tissues.
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the quartered or folded handkerchief such as is used in the carton.
Figure 4 is a fragmentar view showing a modified type of removable corner-cap.
Referring to the complete assembly, the preferred type of dispensing packet is denoted generally by the numeral 4. This is in the form of a substantially fiat, rectangular pasteboard or equivalent envelope or carton to contain a limited number, let us say a half-dozen or so, tissue paper handkerchiefs, these denoted by the numerals 5. The upper corner-portion, the corner to the right in Figure l, is constructed to provide a separable and quickly detachable corner-cap B. Arcuate score lines I on opposite sides join with transverse score lines 8 and 9 on marginal edges 2 Claims. (01. 200-57) 2 to define the cap. By merely squeezing and removing the cap in a well known fashion, the completecorner is opened, as shown in Figure 2. The handkerchiefs are folded in ,quarters, as shown in Figure 3, and the fold i0 is so arranged as" to be in proximity to the discharge opening, ghereby to permit convenient individual extrac- The purpose of this invention is to have a small packet containing tissue handkerchiefs or napkins folded in such manner that they may be carried on the person so that the paper napkins or handkerchiefs will not become contaminated or crumpled in the pocket, thus protecting same until the user is ready to pluck a single sheet from the packet, and also to have such packet of a size suitable for sale through vending machines.
Reference is had now to the modification seen in Figure 4. Here the container is denoted by the numeral 12, and this is provided with a slightly different form of comer-cap. That is to say, the transverse score-lines l3 and I4 define, in conjunction with the L-shaped marginal scorelines l5 and iii, a readily tearable and removable corner-piece I! which constitutes the tearable and removable corner-cap. This is shown as an optional form of the invention and the claims are to be construed in accordance with both types or forms.
It is to be understood that the matter of material is also optional to the extent that either suitable paper or cardboard, or the like be actually employed in practice. Then, too, I have used the expression container" to broadly comprehend this phase of the invention, it being intended to cover any sort of an envelope-like receptacle. Moreover, I have used the expressions "package and packet" to further encompass my ideas.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understandin of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in the shape, size and arrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.
I claim:
A relatively small pocket-type handkerchief and tissue container of the class described comprising a substantiall flat container, folded handkerchiefs therein, one comer-portion of said container being provided with transverse and marginal score-lines adjoining the transverse score-lines and defining a removable corner-cap, and folded handkerchiefs in said container removable through the opening provided when the corner cap is detached, said handkerchiefs being folded into quarters and the folds being arranged so that the bight portions of the folds are adjacent to the corner opening, this to facilitate grasping and safely and satisfactorily removing the handkerchiefs one by one.
2. A pocket-sized paper handkerchief packet of the class described comprising a pocket-size paper stock handkerchief packaging and dispensing container, said container being substantially flat and rectangular in form, a predetermined corner portion of the marginal rim of said container being provided with transversely extending straight across score lines, one of said lines being on one side of and spaced from said comer portion and the other line being spaced from and on the opposite side of said corner portion, arcuate score lines formed in opposed side walls of the container at said corner portion and having their ends adjoining adjacent ends of said first named score lines and defining therewith a readily separable and removable four-walled corner-cap, said cap, when torn out and removed, providing a completely open corner permitting access to be had to the interior of the container, and substantially square-shaped handkerchiefs in said container removable through said open corner after the corner-cap has been detached, each handkerchief being folded into symmetrical halves, and then again folded transversely intermediate the ends of said halves to provide quarter folds, said handkerchiefs being arranged in the container so that thecoacting folds provide a pointed corner grip which is exposed when the cap is removed, whereby to facilitate the step of grasping said corner grip and withdrawing the handkerchief, without tearing, through said corner-opening.
