11 Claims. (01. 2-268) This invention relates to shoulder pads.

It is an object of the invention to provide a shoulder pad carrying member in the form of a yoke or shoulder lining which is simple to manufacture and insert in the garment and maintains a pad in proper position.

With this general object and still other objects which will appear in the following full description in mind, the invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts and details of construction which will now first be'fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing, and will then be more.v particularly pointed out in the appended claims. r

In the drawing:

Figure 1 is a plan view of a yoke with a shoulder pad in position thereon;

Figure 2 is a fragmentary View showing an intermediate stage in the attachment of the pad to the yoke;

Figure 3 is a view of the opposite side of the yoke of Figure 1, showing a further stage of manufacture;

Figure 4 is a developed view showing the at-.- tachment of the yoke and shoulder pad assembly in a garment; and

Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.

Figure 1 shows one-half of the yoke as viewed from the reverse, or side which will be in contact with the material of the garment in a completed garment. The complete yoke willcomprise another half symmetrical with that shown, about the center line indicated in phantom. The yoke I will have a straight or substantially straight rear or lower edge 2 and a front or upper edge having a straight shoulder portion 3 and curved neck portion 4. The outer end of the yoke may be notched, for guiding the folding during the attachment of the pad 5, as indicated at A, B and C. The pad 5 is placed upon the yoke with its straight edge 6 on the line BB and fastened to the yoke by stitching all around the line I. The material is now folded over on line B--B, as indicated in Figure 2, and the two layers of the yoke material are stitched together at the corners on line 8-8, outside the edges of the shoulder pad. The material within the rectangular corner space confined by the stitching is now cut out and the yoke presents the appearance of Figure 3 as now viewed from the opposite side, or face thereof. As shown in Figure 3, the yoke with the shoulder pad attached thereto comprises a pocket 9 between the line AA and line '.B-B and a 2 freely extending flap Hi underlying the same and extending from line A-A to the edge D-D.

The yoke is now folded under along lines II and I2 and stitched to the garment immediately inside these lines, as indicated in Figure 4.'

Figure 4 is a View of the inner side of the garment, developed or laid fiat and without the sleeve element, and in this figure the line i5 indicates the armhole and the line 14 indicates the neckhole. The line l5 indicates the sleeve setting allowance, the sleeve, yoke extension H) and body of the garment being attached together between the lines It and IS. The material may be folded over in forming the shoulder seam along an intermediate line, such as the line I3.

Figure 5 indicates schematically the relationship of the various elements of the shoulder seam, at a typical section taken along the line 5-5 thereof. As there shown, the edge It has been folded under the body material l8 and has been joined to the sleeve material l9 by stitching, indicated at 20 and 2|. The freely extending flap l0 underlies the body material l8, being folded over thereon and joined thereto by the

20 and 2|. The pocket 9 is free as indicated, the tip of the shoulder pad therein being covered by the yoke material.

When the yoke is assembled into the garment the tip of the shoulder pad contained within the pocket 9 extends through from the reverse of the yoke material to the face thereof and underlies the shoulder seam as indicated in Figure 5. While it is preferred to attach the shoulder pad to the reverse of the yoke material by stitching all around as on the line I, it will be apparent that the pad may be attached to the yoke material and within the pocket in any convenient way, without departing from the invention in its broader aspect.

What I claim is:

1. A shoulder pad assembly for garments comprising a lining element having a freely extending flap for fastening to a shoulder seam and a shoulder pad pocket portion overlying the said flap for receiving the tip of a shoulder pad, and a shoulder pad fastened to said lining element with its tip within the said pocket, the shoulder being of less width than the lining element, whereby the lining element may be stitched to a garment adjacent its edges and along lines outside the edges of the shoulder pad.

2. A shoulder pad assembly comprising a yoke lining element have the structure according to claim 1 at both of its ends.

3. A shoulder pad assembly for garments comprising a lining element, a shoulder pad of less width than the lining element and fastened thereto, an edge of the lining element being turned back over the pad, fastened to the underlying layer of the lining element along the sides of the tip of the shoulder pad, outwardly therefrom to the front and back edges of the lining element and cut out to form a pocket for the tip of the shoulder pad, a layer of material forming a freely extending flap joined to the lining element toward the inner edge of the said pocket and adapted for folding over with the front and back edges of the lining element for stitching to the garment along said edges and for fastening the assembly into a shoulder seam. V

4. A shoulder pad assembly for garments comprising a shoulder yoke lining element, shoulder 6. A garment comprising a body having armholes and sleeves joined thereto, a shoulder lining element fastened to the body along its front and back edges and into the armhole seam at its end, a shoulder pad stitched to the reverse of the lining element and having its tip portion on the face thereof and overlying the armhole sea-m.

'7. A garment according to claim 6, in which the lining element comprises a pocket formed therein and covering the tip of the said pad.

A garment according to claim 6, in which the-lining element comprises a pocket formed thereinand covering the tip of the said pad and the lining element is wider than the said pad and pocket and has its front and rear edges turned pads of less width than and fastened to the lining lining element and cut out to form a pocketfor the tip of the shoulder pad, a layer of material forming a freely extending flap joined to the lining element toward the inner edge of the said pocket and adapted for folding over with the front and back edges of the lining element for i stitching to the garment along said edges and for fastening the assembly into a shoulder seam.

5. A shoulder pad assembly for garments comprising a shoulder yoke lining element, shoulder pads fastened to the lining element with the outer ends of the pads spaced from the adjacent borders thereof, the material beyond the outer end of the pad being turned back over the pad and fastened to itself along adjacent edges of the pad and crosswise to its borders outside the limits of the pad to form a pocket for the end of the shoulder pad, and the corners of the fold being cut out outside the lines of fastening so that the pocket is of less Width than the lining element, and the said material also extending beyond the inner end of the pocket and being adapted for folding back and fastening into a shoulder seam.

A garment comprising a body having armholes and sleeves joined thereto, a shoulder yoke lining element fastened to the body along its front and back edges and into the armhole seams at its ends, and shoulder pads stitched to the reverse of said yoke toward the ends thereof, each said pad having its tip portion on the face of the yoke and overlying the armhole seam. 7

10. A garment according to claim 9, in which the yoke comprises pockets formed therein and covering the tips of the said pads.
