Application June 1, 1945, Serial No. 597,135
This invention relates generally to an improved undergarment for women.
In particular the invention is directed to, and it is an object to provide, a brassire which includes novel features whose purposes are to maintain the desired separation of the busts; to hold the busts up, which is especially desirable for maternity brassieres; and to prevent undue stretching of the bust pockets when the same are made of bias cut material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a brassire which includes a novel strap arrangement whose purpose is to prevent the brassire from slipping or riding up in the back, which assures of comfort to the wearer.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive garment, and yet one which will be exceedingly efiective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects are accomplished by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several VleWSZ Figure 1 is a back view of the improved brassiere in open position.
Figure 2 is an enlarged cross section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic back view of the brassiere showing the position of the parts when the garment is in use.
Figure 4 is a similar View but shows a modified back strap arrangement.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the brassire in connection with which the present invention is incorporated is of substantially conventional style and includes a front panel I, to which is attached a pair of bias cut bust pockets 2. Elongated side panels 3 are connected to the ends of the front panel I and bust pockets 2 and extend laterally outwardly, being adapted to encircle the body of the wearer and to connect in the middle of the back by hooks and eyes, indicated at 4 and 5, respectively, on the outer ends of said side panels.
The front panel I, bias cut bust pockets 2, and side panels 3 are bound about the borders thereof with relatively narrow-margin bias tape, as illustrated for example at 6.
A pair of shoulder straps 1 connect between the apex of corresponding bust pockets 2 and the side panels 3 adjacent the outer ends thereof.
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-42) To the above described garment I apply my invention, which comprises the following;
A pair of relatively wide tapes 3 and 9, which are on the straight, i, e. non-bias, are disposed in intersecting relation on the back side of the bras sire; said tapes extending, in conforming relation, along the top and bottom edges of the bust pockets 2; each tape extending along the top edge of one pocket, intersecting the other tape, as at I0, and thence extending along the bottom edge of the other pocket. As here shown, the tapes 8 and 9 at their point of intersection are I free or unattached, while along the upper edges stitched to the latter along of the bust pockets 2 said tapes are continuously the upper edge of the Along the bottom edges of the bust pockets 2 the stitching may be continuous along the lower edge of said tapes, as shown, or these portions of the tapes may be left detached from the pockets, and stitched to the goods at points on opposite sides of the pockets, as may be desired.
The tapes 8 and 9, above the point 'of intersection IO, extend only to the apex I2 of the bust pockets 2, and other relatively wide, straight tapes I 3 extend from the apex I2 outwardly along the remaining upper edge of said pockets and thence extend along the top edge of the side panels 3 to adjacent the outer ends thereof. The tapes I3 are stitched adjacent their upper edges, as at I4, to the pockets 2 and side panels 3 along a line adjacent the corresponding edges of the latter.
With the above described arrangement of tapes 8, and I3, the desired separation and uplift of the bust pockets 2 is maintained for maximum comfort and stylish appearance.
In addition, connection of said tapes in the manner described prevents undue stretching of the bias-cut bust pockets.
To prevent the brassire, when worn, from slipping or riding up in the back, I provide a pair of elongated straps I5 which connect, at their inner ends, to the side panels 3 relatively close to the outer e n ds thereof, said straps being adapted to encircle the body of the wearer and to connect in the front below the front panel I by means of a hook and eye unit I6. This arrangement is clearly disclosed in Fig. 3.
In Fig. 4 I illustrate a, modified arrangement of the back straps. Here the back straps I1 are connected to the side panels 3 in a manner for intersection, as at I8, in the middle of the back of the wearer, and to thence encircle the wearer for tapes, as at II.
- 3 connection directly below the front panel by means of a hook and eye unit l9.
The back straps of Figs. 3 and 4 serve effectively, when in use, to prevent the brassiere from riding upin the back.
In either case, the back straps may be a continuation of the shoulder straps, or they may be separate as shown and attached to the brassiere on the outside or inside thereof at an angle from either the middle or bottom of the brassire. Also the front ends of the straps may be hooked either to each other or to a girdle if worn with the brassire.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that there has been produced such a garment as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the garment, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
' Having thus described the invention, the following is claimed as new and useful and upon which Letters Patent is desired:
A brassire comprising a supporting front panel, a pair of bias cut bust cups attached to the upper edge of the panel, a side panel connected to each end of the front panel, means to connect the ends of the side panel, a pair of relatively wide non-elastic tapes cut on the straight, each tape extending along the top edge of one pocket and along the bottom edge of the adjacent pocket, said tapes crossing at the point of juncture of the pockets, that portion of each tape which extends along the top edge of the pocket being stitched only along its upper edge to the adjacent edge of the pocket, and that portion of each tape which extends along the bottom edge of the pocket being stitched only along its lower edge to the adjacent edge of the pocket, the tapes at the point of crossing thereof both being free and unattached to each other or to the pockets.
