(Cl. 37-129) This invention relates to hauling scrapers of the type wherein a tiltable bowl assembly supported in a wheeled frame coupled to a tractor, may be moved into and out of loading, carrying and dumping positions by means under control of the operator of the tractor.
Itis a purpose of this invention to provide a hauling scraper of the character described which is constructed, arranged and subject to operation in such manner that when coupled to a power operated vertically movable draft unit of the type embodied in tractors now in general use, it will afford the advantages and improvements as follows:
1. The lifting of the bowl assembly to a greater carrying height than possible with previous types of hauling scrapers whichk are raised by tractorcarried vertically movable draft or hitch units in the manner heretofore practiced, thereby preventing stalling of the tractory and other operational failures encountered in carrying loaded bowls at the usual carrying height over rough and uneven ground. f
2. The 'automatic operation of the front apron of the bowl assembly to close the bowl when in carrying position and to open the bowl for loading and dumping operations thereof, through the use of a simple means contained entirely within thescraper and operating responsive to movements of one of the parts of the scraper frame.
3. The handling of heavier scraper loads with light tractors and without danger of upsetting or likelihood of operational failure of the tractor or scraper or both.
4. A greater nicety of control of the scraper at the will oi the tractor operator.
5. The advantage of commencing to discharge the load while the bowl is in a high load-carrying position as well as while the bowl is being lowered into ground-engaging position in which it is tilted into dumping position, due to the provision for a positive opening of the apron incident to the beginning of the lowering of the bowl from carrying position to dumping position.
6. A sectional wheel-supported scraper frame' having upper and lower frame sections subject to lifting and lowering movement responsive to the operation of the vertically movable tractor-carried draft or hitchmnit to which the frame is coupled; and wherein the upper frame is movable relative to the lower frame and supports the bowl assembly so that it is subject to a higher lift as well as an automatic operation of the apron thereof responsive to movement of the upper frame relative to the lower frame.
2 7. A simple power-operated extensible and retractible link between the upper and lower frame sections for moving the upper section and bowl thereon relative to the lower section.
8. A power operated link, such asa hydraulic cylinder, arranged between the frame sections and subject to operation by means of and responsive to the hydraulic operating means for the vertically movable draft unit on the tractor, whereby upon raising the two frame sections responsive to the draft unit, the hydraulic cylinder will also be operated to raise the upper frame section relative to the lower frame section, and during the lowering of the two -frame sections responsive to the draft unit, the hydraulic cylinder will be actuated to lower the upper frame relative to the lower frame, thereby utilizing the readily accessible power of the hydraulic system of the tractor to control the operation of the scraper to the end of providing the advantages herein noted in a particularly eiiicacious manner. 9. Two hydraulic cylinders operated by the tractor hydraulic system, so that one cylinder will move the upper frame relative to the lower frame for the .purpose hereinbefore noted, and the other cylinder will operate to aid in the lifting of the scraper frame as a whole and to transmit a part of the scraper load onto the tractor so as to hold the front of the tractor-on the ground and prevent upsetting of the tractor.
An important object of this invention is to provide a hauling scraper wherein a sectional frame having upper and lower sections arranged so that the upper section is movable up and down relative to the lower section and carries the bowl and apron, has associated therewith a simple means which responds to movement of the upper frame section so as to lift and lower the apron, thereby automatically opening and closing the bowl in a particularly efficacious manner.
Another object is to provide a scraper such as next above recited in which the apron will open the bowl and allow the load to be discharged upon the initial lowering movement of the upper section and bowl, thereby making it possible to electively commence discharging the load with the bowl lowered but a slightdistance below its highest carrying position and affording an increased discharge in proportion t0 the distance the bowl is lowered, inasmuch as the apron is raised higher and provides a larger discharge opening from the initial lowering movement of the upper frame section and bowl to the point at Which the bowl is lowered into ground engaging position, preliminary to being tilted in the usual manner to complete the dumping operation.
With the foregoing objects in view, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, the invention resides in the parts and in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring -to the drawings more specifically, A designates a tractor of the type with which my scraper is to be used, and which is provided with a hydraulically operated vertically movable draft or hitch unit B for coupling :the scraper to the tractor.
As here shown the draft unit B includes draft links i pivote-d to the .tractor below the rear axle l and extending rearwardly therefrom and operating links 9 connecting links 'l with bell cranks l which latter are operated by a hydraulic cylinder Il whereby the draiit links may be raised and lowered. The cylinder Il is controlled by means of a lever l2 and associated means, not shown.` The other elements of the hydraulic system for operating the draft unit are omitted from the -drawings as such a system and its mode of operation are well known to those skilled in this art.
In accordance with the present invention I provide in association with the draft unit B and in pivotal connection with the tractor A at a point above and preferably forwardly of the rear axle I, an extensible link i3 extending upwardly and rearwardly from said axle and being in the form of a piston and cylinder assembly with its outer end adapted for connection with the scraper. The purpose of -this extensible link will be hereinafter i'ully described.
A scraper made in accordance with my invention, as shown in :the accompanying drawing, generally includes a sectional wheel-supported frame made up of an upper section C and a lower section D, a scraper bowl E mounted on the upper section, an apron F associated with the bowl and the frame, a coupling means or draw bar connection G for connecting the forward end of the lower frame with the draft links 1 on the tractor, a pivotal or hinge arrangement of the frame sections so that both will be raised and lowered responsive to the operation of the draft unit B on the tractor, and a power operated means such as 'a hydraulic cylinder H connected as a link between the frame sections for raising and lowering the .upper frame section C relative to the lower frame section D.
As here shown .the upper and lower sections are U-shaped and the side bars I4 of the upper section carry stub axles I5 at their rear ends forv wheels I6 supporting the entire frame structure However. it is to be understood that within the purview and scope of my invention. the wheels may be mounted on either section or connected to the frame as a whole in any manner,v provided the frame as a whole is wheel supported and both sections thereof may be lifted and lowered responsive to the draft unit B.
Means is provided for connecting or associating the -upper and lower frame sections so that both may be raised and lowered at the same time responsive to the unit B, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section responsive to the power operated means H. As here shown the side bars I1 of the lower section are pivoted as at I8 at their rear ends to the clevises I 9 welded or votherwise fixed to the side bars I4 of the upper section at points somewhat forwardly of the wheels l-B, whereby the forward end of the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the upper section and the two sections are connected for simultaneous movement responsive to operation of the vertically movable draft unit B. In connection with this arrangement it should be noted that my invention contemplates any coupling or connection of the two frame sections which will make it possible to raise and lower both sections responsive to the draft unit B and raise Aand lower the upper section C responsive .to the power operated means H.
The bowl E is pivoted as at 2li on the side bars i4 of the upper section C so that it may be moved into and out-of-loading, carrying and dumping positions in the usual manner. A latch means J associated with the bowl and operable from the tractor by mean-s of a cable K, is arranged to releasably lock the bowl into loading, carrying and dumping positions, there being notches 2| in the bowl for cooperation with the latch means. The front of the bowl is open and at the forward edge of the bottom of the bowl a scraper blade 22 is xed in the usual manner.
Arms 23' pivoted as a/t 24 of the upper frame C support the apron F so that it is gravitationally held in position to close the front of the bowl and may be swung upward :to open the bowl or lowered to close it.
Means is provided in association with the -two frame sections C and D and the apron F for automatically lifting Iand lowering the apron responsive to the movement of the upper frame section C relative to the lower section and, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, includes a pair of bell cranks 25 fulcrumed on one of the frame sections with certain ends thereof abutting the other frame section while their other ends are arranged to abut and slide Ialong tracks 26 on the apron. As here shown the fulcrum is at 21 on the lower section but it is obvious that the fulcrum could be on the upper section in the same manner as here shown to raise the apron when the upper section is lowered relative to the lower frame section. Anti-friction rollers 25' are provided on the bell cranks 25 to ride on the tracks 26 and frame I 4.

With'this arrangement, while the two frame sections are lifted responsive to operation of the vertically movable draft unit B, 'from the same power source the cylinder H will operate to move the upper section C upwardly or downwardly relat'ivc to the lower section D. Moreover, the link. i3 is arranged so that' 'loads and forces developed during the operation of the scraper are transmitted to the tractor in such manner as to hold the front of the tractor down, thereby preventing rearingof the tractor.

This carrying position isk shown in Fig. 2 and it will be apparent that likelihood ofstalling of the tractor and of operational failures due to the bowl bottoming against the ground when the tractor is traversing rough-'or hilly terrain or wheels sink into the ground. is materially iessened, if not removed.
It-should be noted that cylinders Ii and il in 'being mechanicalin connected will alwaysact-simultaneousiy- -wnwe cylinder H will not ordinarily e Itime. This-same relative operation applies upon lowering the sections ofthe frame. Usually the load on the cylinder H is less than on cylinders il and it and the cylinder H will operate first then cylinders l i and Il.
As is well known to those skilled `in this art, when thelevei-"IZ is in neutral positionthe-:iluid is held in the cylinders Il. Hand -il whereby the scraper frame sections will be heldin any position to' which it has been moved.v However, when the lever is. mov'ed into a fiuidreleasing' position the frame is subject to gravitational movement as the" fluid discharges from said cylinders, but upon movementof the lever into position to supply fluid under pressure to said cylinders *the frame sections will be raised as hereinbeiore stated.

-When thedumping and spreading operation has been completedithe latch means J is again released-andthe bowl will gravitate into the lapproximate. position shown in Fig. l ready for loading, -being held again by said'latch means in the loading position and ready for another loading operation. When in this position it can be raised and lowered as desired to best suit the conditions at hand and dependent on the depth at which it is desired to position the blade, by\ actuating the cylinders Il and H as hereinbefore noted. This position control can be gauged to a greater nicety than heretofore due to the power operated link or cylinder H causing the upper frame to move relative to the lower frame while the latter is moved responsive to the draft unit B.
Referring now to Fig. 5, a modified form of apron actuating means is employed and as the scraper and tractor elements are of the same construction as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the parts thereof are identified by the same reference characters as applied to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4. The apron actuating means shown in Fig. 5 includes a cable 3l fixed at one end as at I9 to the apron F and at its other end as at Il! to the forward portion of the upper frame section C. The intermediate portion of this cable rides over a pulley Il carried on a rigid arm 42 extending from the projection 3B of the lower frame section D, whereby upon the lowering of the upper frame section the cable is pulled so as to lift the apron and open the bowl; whereas whenthe upper section is raised the cable is slacked and the apron will gravitate into bowl-closing position shown in Fig. 5. The advantage of this arrangement is that no connection of the apron or its 'operating means need be made to the tractor or the hoisting hitch or draft unit B carried by the tractor.
Referring now to Fig. 6, there is shown a modifled form of extensible link 43 corresponding to link i3 and pivoted at its inner end as at M to the tractor in the same place as is link I8. However, the link 43 at its outer end is pivoted as at- 4I to the upper end o f an upright link u the lower end of which is pivoted as at 41 to the forward end of the lower frame section D. A hydraulic cylinder link Il is pivoted at its upper end to the Joint of the links I! and 46 and at its lower end to the lower section D rearwardly of the link II as at 49, This forms an articulate strut connection straddling the draft connection of the tractor in the manner shown in my copending application Ser. No. 513,193 filed December 6, 1943, on which Patent 2,386,192 was granted on Oct. 9, 1945. In all other respects the tractor-scraper combination shown in Fig. 8 is of the same construction and arrangement shown in Figs. l to 4 and therefore the similar parts are identified by the same reference characters as applied in Figs. l to 4. The cylinder link Il is connected by a fluid line 50 to the fluid line I2 and is operated simultaneously with the cylinder H. It has the same function as the hydraulic cylinder Il but is in a different location and requires the use of the piston-cylinder type of extensible link Il also the link l0.
It is important to notey that my improved scraper in having the upper frame section movable relative to the lower frame section and in having a means for moving the apron responsive to movement of the upper section in the manner herewith disclosed, makes it possible to open the bowl and discharge most of the load while the bowl is in a comparatively high dumping position, inasmuch as the initial lowering movement of the bowl from its highest position will cause the apron to open the bowl and this opening action will increase as the bowl is further lowered. This arrangement makes it possible to easily and enectively spread most of the load as desired without tilting the bowl into nal dumping position.
While I have shown and described specific embodiments of my invention I do not limit myself to the exact details of construction set forth, and the invention embraces such changes, modications and equivalents of the parts and their formation and arrangement as come within the purview of the appended claims.
I claim:
l. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections, means affording a draft connection between the lower section and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both may be raised and lowered responsive to operationof said draft unit. and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper section for movement into and out of loading, carrying and dumping positions, and power operated means for raising the upper section relative to the lower section.
2. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections, means affording a draft connection between the lower section and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both may be raised and lowered responsive to operation of said 'draft unit, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper section for movement into and out of loading. carrying and dumping positions, and' power operated means for raising the upper section relative to the lower section to raise the bowl to a higher carrying position than that afforded by the lift of said draft unit.
3. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections, means affording a draft connection between one of said sections and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both may be raised and lowered responsive to operation of said draft unit, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper section for movement into and out of loading. carrying and dumping positions. pOiMer operated means for raising the upper section relative to the lower section, and means affording the connection of said power operated means with the source of power for operating said draft unit so that the power operated means will raise the upper section while powerl is being applied to said draft unit whereby the power operated unit having the least load thereon will operate first.
4. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections, means affording adraft connection between the lower section and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both i may be raised and lowered responsive to operation of said draft unit, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowlsupported by said upper section for movement into and out of loading. carrying and dumping positions, and power operated means for raising the upper section relative to the lower section and means connecting said power operated means with said draft unit so that the power operated means will operate to first raise the upper section relative to the lower section after which the draft unit will automatically commence to raise both sect1-ons.
5. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power 'operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections. means alfording a draft connection between thel lower section and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both may be raised and lowered responsive to operation of said draft unit, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper section for movement into and out of loading, carrying and dumping positions, and power operated means for raising and lowering the upper section relative to the lower section.
6. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections, means affording a draft connection between the lower section and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both may be raised and lowered responsive to operation of said draft unit, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper section for movement into and out of loading, carrying and dumping positions, power operated means for raising and lowering the upper section relative to the lower section, and means affording the connection of said power operated means with said source of power for operating said draft unit.
7. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional-frame having upper and lower sections, means aording a draft connection between the lower of said sections, and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both may be raised and lowered responsive to operation of said draft unit, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper section for movement into and out of loading, carrying and dumping positions, power operated means for raising and lowering the upper section relative to the lower section, an apron movable for opening and closing said bowl. and means responsive to movement of said upper section relative to the lower section, for operating said apron.
8. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a vtractor-carried power operated vertically movable -draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections, means affording a draft connection between the lower section and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both may be raised and lowered responsive to operation of said draft unit, and the upper section may ik raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper sec-A tion for movement into and out of loading, carrying and dumping positions, power operated means for raising the upper section relative to the lower section, and an extensible and retractible link includiniir a piston and cylinder unit pivotally connected to said lower frame and adapted for pivotal connection with the tractor at a point forwardly and above the rear axle thereof to form an articulate joint between the tractor and the scraper frame.
9. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a. wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections, means affording a draft connection between the lower section and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both may be raised 'and lowered responsive to operation of said draft unit, 'and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper section for movement into and out of loading, carrying and dumping positions, power operated means for raising the upper section relative to the lower section, an extensible and retractible link including a piston and cylinder unit pivotally'connected to said lower frame and adapted for pivotal connection with the tractor at a point forwardly and above the rear axle thereof to form an articulate joint between the tractor and the scraper frame, and means alfording an operative connection of said extensible and retractible link and the source of power of said draft unit so that the link will be extended land retracted responsive to the raising and lowering of said draft unit.
l0. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections, means affording a draft connection between the lower section and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both may be raised and lowered responsive to operation of said draft unit, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper section for movement into and out of loading, carrying and dumping positions, power operated means for raising the upper section relative to the lower section, means' affording the connection of said power operated means with the source of power for operating said draft unit, a power operated extensible and retractible link pivot-ally connected to the lower frame section and adapted for pivotal connection with the tractor, and means affording an operative connection of said last named link with the source of power for operating the draft unit so that the last named link will be extended when the draft unit is raised and will be retracted when the draft unit is lowered.
11. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections, means affording a draft connection between the lower section and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that .both may be raised and lowered responsive to operation of said draft unit, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper section for movement into and out of loading, carrying and dumpingpositions, power operated means for raising the upper section relative to the lower section, means affording the connection of said power operated means with the source of power for operating said draft unit, a power operated extensible and retractible link pivotally connected to the lower frame section and adapted ing.
for pivotal connection with the tractor, and means aifording an operative connection of said last named link with the source of power for perating the draft unit so that the last named link will be extended when the draft unit is raised and will be retracted when the draft unit is lowered, said last named link being arranged so that with its connections to the tractor and the scraper it will form an articulate inverted V-shaped linkage' straddllng the draft connection between the tractor and scraper and being operative to exert a force holding the front of the tractor down.
12. In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections, means aiording a draft connection between the lower section and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both may be raised and lowered responsive, to operation of said draft unit, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper section for movement into and out of loading, carrying and dumping positions, power operated means for raising and lowering the upper section relative to the lower section and an apron movable up and down for opening and closing the bowl, and bell cranks pivoted on one of said sections and having certain ends thereof engaged with the other of said sections and the other ends thereof engaged with the apron so as to raise and lower the apron upon relative movement of said sections.

In a hauling scraper for attachment to a tractor-carried power operated vertically movable draft unit, the improvement which includes a wheel-supported sectional frame having upper and lower sections, means affording a draft connection between the lower section and the draft unit, means connecting said sections so that both may be raised and lowered responsive to operation of said draft unit, and the upper section may be raised and lowered'relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl supported by said upper section for movement into and out of loadcarrylng and dumping positions, power operated means for raising and lowering the upper section relative to the lower section and an apron movable up and down for opening and closing the bowl; and bell cranks pivoted on one of said sections and having certain ends thereof engaged with the other of said sections and the other ends thereof engaged with the apron So as to raise and lower the apron upon relative movement of said sections, said bell cranks being arranged to lift the apron and open the bowl upon the initial lowering movement of said upper section relative to said lower section.

In a hauling scraper, a sectional Wheelsupported frame having upper and lower secbeing arranged tions arranged so that the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a bowl supported on the upper section for movement therewith, an apron movable with the bowl and arranged to be raised and lowered relative thereto for opening and closing the bowl, and bell cranks fulcrumed on one of said sections with certain ends in contact with the other of said sections so that the bell crank will be rocked on movement of lower section; the other ends of said bell cranks that the apron will be raised and lowered responsive to the rocking of said bell cranks.

In combination with a tractor, a hauling scraper `including a wheel-supported sectional frame made up of an upper section and a lower section constructed and arranged so that both sections may be raised and lowered, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl tiltably mounted on said upper section for movement into and out of loading, hauling and dumping positions, a power operated draft unit connecting the lower section with the tractor and being operable for raising and lowering said sections, and a power operated extensible and retractible link connected with said sections for raising and lowering the upper section relative to the lower section.

In combination with a tractor, a hauling scraper including a wheel-supported sectional frame made up of an upper section and a lower section constructed and arranged so that both sections may be raised and lowered, and the upper section may be raised and lowered relative to the lower section, a scraper bowl tiltably mounted on said upper section for movement into and out of loading, hauling and dumping positions, a power operated draft unit connecting the lower section with the tractor and being operable for raising and lowering said sections, a power operated extensible and retractible link connected with said sections for raising and lowering the upper section relative to the lower section, an apron arranged to be raised and lowered to open and close said bowl, and means operating responsive to the movement of the upper section relative to the lower section, for raising and lowering said apron.
