Still further objects of this invention will be apparent as the specification of the same proceeds, and, among others I may mention, to provide a protector or cover for mens hats as characterized hereinbefore, which will be simple, inexpensive to manufacture, flexible, thin and of light weight, so that it may easily be carried in a mans pocket or a ladys handbag, or in a separate envelope which I propose to provide for the same.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification and accompanying the same,

Fig. l is a perspective view of a mans hat to which my protector has been applied, while Fig. 2 is a cross sectional elevational view thereof;

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of my invention;

Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the bottom brim section of the modified form, showing the upper brim section in bottom plan and displaced in endwise relation to the bottom brim section;

Fig. 5 is a plan view of an envelope in which to store and carry my hat protector, the same being indicated therein by dotted lines.

Referring now to the drawings more specifically by characters of reference, the numeral Ill indicates, in general, the combination of a mans hat and my protector applied thereto, the hat itself being indicated by numeral I I, and the protector covering the same by the numeral I2.

My protector preferably is made of very thin, light, and transparent material, like Cellophane, thin rubber, or rubberized fabric, etc., and, of course, the same will be of waterproof material.

The protector is shaped in such a manner that when the same is applied to the hat, it will snugly fit the same all over it, so that it almost will be imperceptible, and will not mar the appearance of the hat which will be clearly seen therethrough.

The protector may have a hollow upper portion I3 shaped to conform to the crown of the hat and tightly fitting thereon, said crown portion I3 being continued around its lower circumference by an upper protector brim I l. The lower protector brim I5, of generally identical configuration, is also employed in my hat protector, and the brim I6 of the hat itself, will be enclosed between the upper and lower brims of the protector, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.

The end portion I! of the brim portion of the protector, may have a strip of similar transparent, light material I 8, employed therearound, said material being secured to the respective marginal portion of the upper and lower brims I l and I5, respectively, thereby connecting them, securing them together, and forming a hollow structure of the two protector brims I4 and I5, closed at the end portions, generally indicated at IT.

The securing of the strip of material It to the respective margins of the protector brims I 4 and I5 may be made by any appropriate means well known in this art, and it will be made in such a manner as not to mar the appearance of the device, not to make it too heavy, and still be strong and reliable, as will be understood. l

The described construction leaves the major portion of the adjoining edges or margins of the upper and lower brims l4 and I5 of the protector free, as generally indicated by the numeral I9, and through this opening between the two brims the hat may be inserted in the protector for the starting of which operation the upper brim I4 may be folded backwardly, as indicated in Fig. 4.

Any of the usual well known slide fasteners, like so-called zippers, indicated by thenumeral 20, may be used to close the open portion of the brims M- and I5 when the protector is finally placed on the hat in the right taut position.

For this purpose the two strips 2I of which the slide fastener is formed, as it is known, may be secured on the marginal free edges of the upper and lower brims, and the slide fastener 20 opened and closed by the operating grip 22 thereof, which grip, finally, may be hooked to the closed end of the protector when the same is applied to a hat, as indicated at 23.

The lower brim I5 may be continued in an inner protector strip 24 for the sweat band of the hat, and for the purpose of further securing the protector on the hat, and making its wear more comfortable and its fitting smoother.

The use and application of my device will be obvious from the herein description, but I may add the following:

When it is desired to apply the protector on a hat, the larger portion I9 of the corresponding marginal edges of the upper and lower brims I4 and I5 of the protector, will be opened by with;

drawing the operating member 22 of the slide fastener 20, whereupon, preferably the upper brim M will be folded backwardly with the crown portion l3 of the protector, as indicated in Fig. 4, the crown portion 13 of the hat protector pulled over the crown portion ll of the hat, while the front portion 25 of the brim of the hat will be pushed into'the hollow closed space between the respective portions of the protector brims closed by the strip l8, at the place indicated at 11.

The rear, larger, free portions '26 and 21 will be closed on the respective larger portion 28 of the brim of the hat, and closed by moving the operating handle 22 of the slide fastener around the rim thereof, and then securing said operating element 22 on the part 23.

It will be seen that the protector now tightly fits all around on the hat, it is tightly closed everywhere, and is absolutely secure in its position.

When it is'desired to remove the protector, the said operations may be performed in. a reverse manner; as described for the placing of the protector.

InFigs. 3 and 4 I show a somewhat modified form of my invention, which generally is of the same construction as described hereinbefore, having the same parts, and being employed on a hat in a similar manner, the only difierence being that instead of the slide fastener 20, snap buttons 29 and corresponding sockets 30 are used on the upper and lower brims, to secure them together when the protector is placed on the hat, as indicated in Fig. 3, and as it will be obvious.

The lower brim 15 will have ears or projections 31 'for the snap sockets 30, which ears may be folded upwardly and over the respective snap buttons 29 in the upper brim Hi.

In" Fig. 5, finally, I show an appropriate envelope' 32 into which my hat protector 12 may be placed in a fiat folded position for storage or for carrying the same on the person, when so desired.

What I claim as new and want to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. A hat protector constructed of thin flexible material and having a crown portion and an upper brim portion secured to the edge of said crown portion, and a lower brim portion having a corresponding size to that of the upper brim portion and having a minor portion of its edge secured directly to a corresponding portion of the edge of the upper brim portion, the major portions of the edges of the lower brim portion and the upper brim portion being connected to each other by releasable securing means and free to separate from each other to admit a hat between the lower and upper brim portions when said securing means is operated to releasing position.

2. In a hat protector, as set forth in claim 1, cooperating snap fastener buttons and sockets at desired places on the margins of said free edges of the brims in said protector, whereby said free edges may be removably secured together when the protector is applied to a hat, one of said brim edges having projections or ears provided at the places of securing, said ears carrying one of said cooperating snap fastening elements.

3. In a hat protector, as set forth in claim 1, in which the lower brim includes a sweat band forming strip extending around the inner circumference thereof, said strip being adapted to be folded over the sweat band of the hat, when the protector is applied to it.
