The top spacer area 23 contains an aperture, preferably a cut-out portion 30, adjacent an end of the hollow side wall formed by the sections 22, 23 and 24 when in erected position. This aperture, together with score lines 3| and 32, which define the ends of the inner and outer side wall sections, together with the score line 33, permit the extending portions 22', 23' and 24, when formed into a partial hollow end wall structure, to be swung into position as will more fully appear hereinafter.
The blank as shown is substantially square for purposes of illustration merely. The invention also contemplates the use of rectangular blanks for the formation of frame view boxes having side wall sections which provide side walls and end walls of various heights. The designation of certain of the walls as side walls, and others as end walls, is merely for convenience of illustration and definition. Thus, at the remaining opposite ends of the bottom panel 2|, there are extensions formed by panels 34, 35, 36 and 31 defined by score lines 38, 39, 40 and GI. The panel 34 constitutes an outer wall section, the panel 36 an inner wall section, and the panel 35 a top spacer section. The panel 31 provides a tuck-in flap which also functions as a bottom spacer to aid in maintaining the hollow structurev wall sections 24 of the side wall.
Referring now to Fig. 2, it will be seen tha the portions constituting the side wall panel sections 22 to 24, and their extending portions 22 and 24', including the lue flaps 25, have now been folded into the position indicated. The glue flap, having been provided with glue on its reverse side is secured to the bottom panel 2|. This is the form in which the article is shipped to the trade ultimately to be set up by the user to provide a frame view box.
In order to provide a frame view box the article shown in Fig. 2 is opened up by opening the side wall sections 22, 23, 24 so that they are in upstanding position. The extending portions 22, 23', 24', are then swung toward each other and inwardly of the box bottom around the crease lines 3|, 32 and 33 so that this structure can hingedly be positioned at right angles to the outer side wall sections. The aperture 30, by the removal of a certain portionof the top spacer area 23', together with the score lines 31, 32 and 33,
permit great flexibility and a suitable hinge is provided by the material of the inner and outer wall areas beneath the aperture 33. when the extending portions are properly positioned, the material beneath the apertures extends across the ends of the hollow side walls, as well as across the ends of the partial hollow end wall structures beneath the aperture to provide spacing means for an end wall structure.
After the extending portions, or internal partial hollow end wall structures, composed of inner and outer wall areas 22', 23' and 24 are brought into proper position, the remaining external hollow end wall structures, provided by panel wall sections 34 and 38, together with top spacer panel section 35, are wrapped around the same so that the inner wall section 36 and the outer wall section 34, together with the top spacer section 35, envelope the inner wall area 22', outer wall area 24' and top spacer area 23' respectively, to provide the completed set up frame view box indicated in Fig. 4. In order to prevent the bottom portions of the inner wall areas 22' and 25' from being pressed inwardly, the tuck-in flap or spacer 3115 provided and this passes beneath the panel 24', which preferably is somewhat foreshortened for this purpose, and abuts the panel 22'.
The foregoing type of frame view box has many advantages in that it can be very speedily assembled because of the hinged hollow wall extension which forms the internal partial hollow end wall structure and acts as a spacing and reinforcing means for the external end wall structure. Because of the simplicity in design, the box can rapidly be assembled with little fingering of spacer parts. It will be seen that the completed end wall structure is nicely held in hollow wall position and maintains the frame view effect because of the underlying structure formed by the extending portions which is also hollow in cross section, the wall areas being spaced apart by the bridging piece or connecting top spacer section 23'. This type of structure is desirable because of the added strength and rigidity characteristics which are imparted thereto and enables the use of a lighter weight paper.
Because of. its extreme simplicity in design, and the elimination of numerous spacer parts heretofore characteristic of conventional types of frame view cartons, a cut edge is left exposed on the ends of the panels 34 which form the outer wall sections ofthe end wall structure. This is indicated generally by the reference numeral 44. See, in particular, Figs. 3, 4 and 5. Under certain circumstances this. may be deemed undesirable'.
In order to overcome this and to provide a rounded edge, which not only imparts greater rigidity and strength to the carton but especially provides the much desired finished appearance sought after in the industry, a bellows fold can be provided in this type of carton by means of the novel structure about to be described.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 7 a preferred type of bellows fold can be obtained by providing an outer wall extension area I22 which is integral with its adjacent outer end wall section I34 but having a crease line 45. The area l22'is bisected, preferably as shown, by a crease or score line 46. In its preferred form the extending portion constituting the outer wall area I22, inner wall area I24, and top spacer area I23 should not extend beyond the score line 139.
When this type of constructionis folded as described in connection with the referred modification, there is provided thedesired finished edge now generally indicated at i in Fig. 9.
If it is desired to have a. longer partial internal hollow end wall structure, the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 10 can be adopted. This illustrates a construction similar to that shown in Fig. '7 but of a length equal to that depicted in the preferred embodiment which does not utilize the bellows fold. Whenever the extension is longer than that shown in Fig. '7 it is necessary to provide a slit, as. indicated at 41. in order to. perit is possible to attain even a more rigid end wall construction to provide greater strength I5 characteristics and spacing arrangement. such an embodiment extending portions of a side wall constituting an outer wall area 222' and an inner wall area 224' of a partial hollow end wall structure, there is provided an extension member 48 on the area 222' and an extension member 69 on the area 22 8'. The member A8 may be provided on its under side with glue. In setting up a box of the type illustrated in Figs. 11 and 12, provided with the extension members 68 and t9, the glue flap 69 will be secured to the extension member at and become secured thereto so that the resulting partial hollow end wall structure is made rigid from top to bottom, being in effect provided with a bottom spacing element substantially equivalent to a top spacer 223 of the extending portion forming the partial hollow end wall structure. It will be observed that no tuck-in flap equivalent to that shown at 31 in the preferred form is necessary on the enveloping hollow end wall structure formed by the panels 235, 235 and 236. If desirable, the glue flap d9 need not be joined to the extension member it. The latter can be omitted. The flap 69, without the application of glue, can be made to function as a bottom spacer. This arrangement would also eliminate the necessity for a tuck-in flap of the type indicated at 31 in the preferred form of blank.
It will thus be seen that the objects hereinbefore set forth may readily and efficiently be attained and since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A box of the character described, compris ing a bottom panel, a hollow side wall provided by panels forming inner and outer spaced apart wall sections connected by a top spacer section, all of said sections having extending portions providing a hollow partial end wall structure composed of inner and outer wall areas connected by a top spacer area having a substantially square aperture traversing the spacer section adjacent an end of said hollow side wall before said hollow end wall structure is swung into position and hinging said inner and outer wall areas and said top spacer area to said inner and outer wall sections of said hollow side wall thereby providing spacing means for an enveloping end wall structure, and a remaining hollow end wall structure provided by panels forming inner and outer wall sections and a top spacer section enveloping said inner and. outer wall.

each having extending portions providing a spaced apart hollow partial end wall structure of inner and outer wall areas connected along a hinge line to said inner and outer wall section and connected by a top spacer area providing spacing means for an end wall structure, said hinge line being defined by the end of the top spacer section in line with the ends of the inner and outer wall sections and bottom panel, which inner and outer wall areas are disconnected transversely along the end of said top spacer section adjacent the hinge line and which are also disconnected along the top of said top spacer area a distance at least equal to the distance between said walls with the inner and outer areas of the end wall structure remaining connected by the top spacer area beyond the area of disconnection, and a remaining hollow end wall structure provided by panels forming inner and outer wall sections and a top spacer section enveloping said inner and outer wall areas and top spacer area respectively, said hollow side wall top spacer section and said hollow end wall top spacer area lying in substantially the same plane.
3. A box of the character described, comprising a bottom panel, a hollow side Wall provided by panels forming inner and outer spaced apart wall sections connected by a top spacer section, said spaced apart wall sections having extending portions providing a hollow partial and wall structure composed of inner and outer wall areas connected by a top spacer area having a cut-out portion providing an aperture adjacent an end of said hollow side wall and extending transversely of said top spacer area, which aperture is of a length at least equal to the space between said walls with the inner and outer areas of the end wall structure remaining connected by the top spacer area beyond the cut-out portion, said partial end wall structure being hingedly positioned at right angles to said inner and outer wall sections of said hollow side wall with one outer side wall area beneath said aperture abutting both ends of the hollow side wall to provide spacing means for an end wall structure, and a, remaining hollowend wall structure provided by panels forming inner and outer wall sections, and a top spacer section enveloping said inner and outer wall areas and top spacer area respectively.

A box of the character described, compris ing a bottom panel, a hollow side wall provided by panels forming inner and outer wall sections connected by a top spacer section, all of said sections having extending portions hinged thereto along a hinge line and providing a hollow end wall structure of inner and outer wall areas connected by atop spacer area providing spacing means for an end wall structure, which hinge line is defined by the end of the top spacer section in line with the ends of the inner and outer wall sections and bottom panel, said top spacer area being disconnected transversely of said top spacer section adjacent the hinge line area and which is also disconnected along the top of said spaced apart end walls along said end wall structure a distance at least equal to the distance between said walls to provide an aperture with the inner and outer areas of the end wall structure remaining connected by the top spacer area beyond said aperture, said inner wall area having an extension member at its bottom portion abutting the outer wall area to maintain the inner wall area in spaced relation therewith and to provide spacing means for an end wall structure. and a remaining hollow wall structure provided by panels forming inner and outer wall sections, and a top spacer section enveloping said inner and outer wall areas and top spacer area respectively.
5. A box of the character described, comprising a bottom panel, a hollow side wall provided by panels forming inner and outer wall sections connected by a top spacer section, all of-said sections having extending portions hinged thereto along a hinge line and providing a hollow partial end wall structure of inner and outer wall areas connected by a top spacer area providing spacing means for an end wall structure, which hinge line being defined by the end of the top spacer section in line with the ends of the inner and outer wall sections and bottom panel, said top spacer area being disconnected transversely of said'top spacer section adjacent the hinge line area and which is also disconnected longitudinally along the top of said spaced apart walls along said end wall structure a distance at least equal to the distance between said walls to provide a cut-out portion with the inner and outer areas of the end wall structure remaining connected by the top spacer area beyond said outout portion, said inner wall area having an extension member at its bottom portion and said outer wall area also having an extension at its bottom portion in overlapping and secured relatioii with said inner wall area extension member rigidly to maintain said wall areas in spaced apart hollow relation with respect to each other and to provide spacing means for anend wall structure, and a remaining hollow wall structure provided bypanels forming said inner and outer wall sections, and a top spacer section enveloping said inner and outer wall areas.

A box of the character described, comprising a bottom panel, a hollow side wall provided by panels forming inner and outer wall sections connected by a top spacer section, all of said sections having extending portions hinged thereto 8 along a hinge line and providing a hollow end wall structure of inner and outer wall areas connected by a top spacer area providing spacing means for an end wall structure, which hinge line being defined by the end of the top spacer section in line with the ends of the inner and outer wall sections and bottom panel, said top spacer area being disconnected transversely of said top spacer section adjacent the hinge line area and which is also disconnected longitudinally along the top of said spaced apart walls along said end wall structure a distance at least equal to the distance between said walls to 'provide a cut-out portion with inner and outer areas of the end wall structure remaining connected by the top spacer area beyond the said cut-out portion, a remaining hollow end wall structure provided by panels forming inner and outer wall sections and a top spacer section enveloping said'inner and outer wall areas respectively, said outer wall area which forms a section of the partial inner end wall structure being connected to the outer wall section of said adjacent end wall enveloping structure along a, crease line, and having a diagonal crease line extending upwardly from the bottom of the outer side wall section providing a bellows end fold for said box.
