SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,419, dated July 19, 1881,
Application filed March 10, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, JosEPH O. BAIRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
4 This invention has for' its object to furnish a lock of superior merit; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
1n the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lock, showing the dial and the knob by which the bolt is thrown back. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner side of the lock. Fig. 3 is a plan. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section; and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detail views of parts of the lock.
a is the main supporting-plate, to which. is attached the mechanism of the lock, and it is, by preference, made of two parallel plates, a a connected together, so as to leave an air-space between them. On the inner side of the plate a is fixed the bolt a suitably attached, so that it slides freely to and fro on its bearings. The bolt is operated by means of a cam-lever, a, or other suitable device, controlled by'the shaft a", journaled in the plate a, and provided with a suitable knob, to, on its outer end. There is fixed on the bolt a a -lip or flange, a", constructed and arranged'to slide into the radial slots in the disks, hereinafter described.
I) is a hollow shaft journaled in the plate a, and is provided with a dial-plate, b, which rests against the outer face of the plate a, and is provided with a pointer or index, 11 to mark the position on the graduated scale b which surrounds it. b there is fixed the operating-disk c, which is provided with a radial slot in its periphery, and with a series of pin-holes, c formed through it near its rim or periphery. The number of pin-holes c is, by preference, made to correspond arithmetically with the scale b, so that On the inner end of the shaft (Model.)

d is a secondary or innershaft placed within shaft 1). It is provided with a suitable head, d, which rests on bearings on the outer end of shaft b, and by which it may be turned, for purposes hereinafter explained. The inner end of this shaft is flush with the inner face of the operatingdisk 0, and is provided with a threaded pin, 0?, which projects beyond the said disk, as shown. The shaft is held in place by a small washer, d placed on the screw-pin d and against the face of the disk 0.
e is an intermediate disk, fixed on. a hollow hub, e, in which is a female thread to receive the pin 61 on the end of shaft 61. The disk "0 is arranged at one end of the hub, so as to leave a plane surface on that side next the disk 0, to permit it to approach close to the latter. It is also provided with a radial slot, 6 and a series of pinholes, 6 which correspond to the radial slot and the pin-holes in the disk 0. A locking-pin, e, is placed, by preference, in one of the holes in the disk 0 and projects outward toward disk 0, and whenv the disks are brought close together its end will enter one of the holes 0 and lock the two disks together. By turning the inner shaft, d, to theleft and holding the shaft 1) stationary the screw-pin d will move the disk 0 away from disk 0, and draw the locking-pine out, and thus unlock or release the one disk from the other.
The disk 0 isalso provided with a series of pin-holes, 0 formed near its center to receive a in (3 and e is a no iellin in nut in one of the holes, 6 in disk 0, and on the opposite side from the pin a, for purposes hereinafter set forth.

i is a secondary disk placed loosely on the chuckfand against the flangef. It is provided with a radial slot, and with a series of pin-holes corresponding to the slots and pinholes in the disks hereinbefore described. It is provided with a cheek-pin, i, which is engaged by the propelling-pin e on disk 0.
The primary or operating disk 0, the secondary disk 6, and the intermediate disk, 0, form the principal mechanism in the combination of my lock.
Additional disks h, made to correspond in every respect with the disk t, may be provided. I have shown only one additional disk, this being sufficient for all ordinary purposes. The disk 5 and the additional disks which may be provided are pressed together and against the flange f by springs 9 fixed on the inner side of the plate 9.
When additional disks are provided, propelling-pins are placed on one side and checkpins on the other side. The propelling-pin on one disk is arranged so that it will engage the check-pin on the next disk.
The radial slots are all so constructed that when brought into line one with the other, and in proper relative position to the bolt the latter can be thrown back, so as to bring the flange or lip a into them.
The combination on which the lock is set may be changed by changing the relative positions of the propelling and check pins, which change of position is effected by taking said pins out of any given set of holes and inserting them in others.
In setting the disks for the purpose of unlockin g, that one next the outer plate, 9, is first brought into position by turning the shaft b to the left. In commencing the operation of settin g the disks it is best first to give the sh aft 1) two, three, or more turns to the left, which couples all the disks together.
In the drawings the disks are set to be unlocked as follows: The disks being all coupled together, as hereinbefore explained, turn the index b to the left till it points to 15 on the dial. This brings the slot in disk hopposite the flange a Now turn the shaft to the right ten degrees till the index marks 5. This brings the slot of the secondary disk i into line with the from and draw the pin 6 out of hole in the operating-disk, and will cause the pin 0 to enter one-of the holes f in the flange of the chuck f and lock the disk in position. Now hold the center shaft so that it cannot turn, and with the other hand turn the outer shaft, 1), so as to bring the index to the starting-point15, and the slot in the operating-disk will be in line with the slots in the other disks, and the bolt a can be thrown back by the shaft 00", bringing the flange a" into the slots.
It will be seen that the combination hereinbefore described is on the scale of ten.
In the manufacture of the lock the number for setting the operating-disk is fixed, so that whenever the index points to this fixed number the slot of said disk will be opposite to the flange M.
The numbers indicating the position of the other disks may be changed with each time of unlocking.
The scale or combination-number does not change with each time of locking or unlocking. The combination-number can only be changed by changing the relative positions of the propelling and checking pins, in manner as hereinbefore stated.
This lock is so constructed that it may be applied to drawers, doors, safes, vaults, 850.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination of the operating-disk fixed on the inner end of the main shaft, the inner shaft placed and revolving in the main shaft, and provided with a projecting screwstem on its inner end, the intermediate disk placed on the screw-stem of the inner shaft and adjustable longitudinally thereon, a chuck or head-block fixed on the inner plate of the frame of the lock, and a secondary disk placed loosely on the chuck, together with the necessary locking-pins and pin-holes, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the hollow main shaft 11, having a fixed disk, 0, on'its inner end, and the intermediate disk, 0, supported on a hub, 0, provided with a central threaded opening, of a shaft, d, placed and revolving in the shaft b, and having a screw-stem, d working in the hub 6, whereby the disk 0 is adjusted to or from the disk 0, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the disk 1 and operating-disk c, of the chuck f, having the recess j" and perforated flange f, intermediate disk, 0, and central shaft, d, having screw-stem (2 substantially as set forth.
