UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. MATTHEWS, OF CANTON, TEXAS.
COMBlNED FIRE SCREEN AND FENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,397, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed May 10, 1881. No model.)
tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention is a combined screen and firefender, and is a novel and useful device for having a combined screen and fire-fender always on hand, and so conveniently arranged that it can be put in place or withdrawn from sight by one motion of the hand and in one moment of time. This screen works in the mantel-piece by means of weights, and is secured in position by means of a spring-latch that catches in notches in the jamb. This screen thus arranged can be made to answer for three purposes By letting it nearly down to the hearth it acts as a blower; by letting it entirely down accidents from fire are prevented, and when let down in the summer time it makes a handsome summer screen.
Figure 1 represents a front view of the mantel-piece and screen, with the screen partly drawn up into the mantel-piece, exposing the fire-place. In this figure, A represents themantel-piece; O,the screen; B B, thejalnbs; D, the spring-latch, and d d notches in the jamb B.
Fig. 2 represents a rear view of the mantelpiece and screen, with the screen in the same position as seen in Fig. 1. In this figure, 2, A represents the mantel-piece; O, the screen; B B, the jambs F, the recessinto which the screen is partly withdrawn i i, ropes or chains; gg, grooved pulleys in bearin gs h h; KK, weights attached to ropes i i and resting in channels L L 5 and f f representgrooves out into jambs B B extending the entire length of the same.
Mycombined screen and fire-fender is made as follows: The 1nantel-piece A is made of wood, stone, iron, or any suitable material, and may be ornamented as desired. It must he tall enough to allow the screen 0 to be entirely withdrawn into recess F. I make thejambs of three pieces of plank, so put together as to leave a channel, L L, in the rear side thereof for the free passage of weights K K, the inner planks, B B, not quite extending to the top of the mantel-piece, leaving room enough for grooved pulleys g g, which are mounted on the same in suitable bearings. On the edges of the inner planks, B B, of the jambs I out grooves ff, extending the entire length of the same, to secure the screen 0 in place and guide it as it runs up anddown, and on the inner edge of one of the jambs I out notches to hold the fender up at any desired elevation by means of spring-latch D. The fender G is suspended in grooves f f by means of ropes t t, pulleys g g, and weights K K. The weights are made heavier than the screen, so that when the spring-latch is withdrawn from notches d d the screen will retire into recess F of its own motion. The screen is made fiat, square, or nearly so, and may be of solid sheet-iron (or may be made in two pieces) or other sheet metal, or it may be perforated or made of wire properly bound.
When the mantel-piece is made of wood it should be lined with sheet metal, to keep it from taking fire from heat radiated from the fender or screen.
I claim- 1. In a combined screen and fire-fender, the combination of screen 0, grooved jambs f f,
- spring-latch D, and notches d d, substantially as described.
2. In a combined screen and fire-fender, the combination of mantel piece A, screen 0,
grooves f f, ropes or chains z, pulleys g g,
weights K K, spring-latch D,and notches cl 61,
substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. JAMES CHARLES MATTHEWS.
