Description

(No Model.) I R. W. WIL'BER.v
' RUBBER SHOE.
No. 244,349. Patentd" July 12,188 14.
WITNESSES QINVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD W. WILBER, OF BRIDGEWATER, MASSACHUSETTS.
RUBBER SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,349, dated July 12, 1881. Application filed May 28, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD W. WILBER, of Bridgewater,in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Rubber Overshoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference beinghad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters andfigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective of a shoe, partly broken away to show my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail.
This invention has relation to rubber overshoes; and it consists in providing the menforcing piece or stay, which extends upward from the bottom of the shoe, on the upper, with a skived or beveled upper edge, whereby harsh marginal contact is avoided and the upper prevented from cracking oft, all as hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letter a desig nates the upper of the rubber overshoe and b its sole portion. The upper is designed to be as thin and elastic as it can be made to possess at the same time sufficient strength, and is therefore re-enforced on the inside next the sole by means of a stay, 0, of strong rubber cloth for this purpose. This stay extends from the bottom or sole of the shoe up on the up-.
per, being in contact therewith on the inside,
and is designed to strengthen and stiffen the upper, and therebyto enable it to undergo the harsh usage to which overshoes are subjected.
The upper edge, e, of the stay 0 is beveled or skived down, so that the abruptness or stiffness of the stay is gradually softened toward its margin, which, being very thin and flexible, is not liable to bear against the rubber of rior stay-piece extending upward from its sole on its upper, and having the skived upper edge e, whereby abrupt marginal contact is avoided and the' upper prevented from cracking off, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD W. WILBER.
