(Cl. 129-35) This invention relates to an improvement in binders for loose sheets. Its main object is to provide a low cost, .efiicient binder, to operate in specific ways to be described.

The example of the invention in the drawings is its preferred form. It consists of covers I and 2 joined by a hinge portion 3 of flexible cover material and the mechanism to clamp the loose sheets S in th'e relation of parts to be described.
Elements of the mechanism include hinge pl-ate 5 fastened to cover 2 by a few rivets B. Plate 5 has two spaced hinge eyes 1 along one edge, Fig, 2, to receive a hinge pintle 8. The eyes 1 are spaced to receive the eyes of other plates 9 and I0. Eyes Il are along the edge of plate I0. Eyes I2 are along the edge of plate 9. Th'e plate 9 is the lclamp plate for the loose sheets S. Plate I is for turning over a part of the mechanism and the sheets S from cover 2 against lcover I as in Fig. 4. Plates 5, I0, 9 all have their hinge eyes held on th'e axis of and by hinge pintle 8 so as to provide a piano hinge type of connection between all three plates.
The clamp plate 9 is formed in cross section like a claw, see Fig. 5, to hold the book of sheets S with a stiff spring action. This clamp plate has a central opening I3 for the passing through it of a screw or bolt I4, with its fixed head in a countersunk opening in plate I0, Fig. 5. The fixed head may have a small integral projection to engage a notch in the opening of plate I0 as indicated, merely to avoid relative turning when the hand nut I is screwed down as indicated in the position of parts in Fig. 5.
A coiled spring I6 is positioned around screw I4 between plates 9 and I0. It tends to swing plate 9 up against the finger nut I5 on screw I4.
Plate IIJ has a set of ears I1 bent up out of its material at right angles to its fiat surface. One is shown in Fig. 4 and the spacing of the set is shown dotted in Fig. 2. They are arranged to serve as a straight line abutment stop against which the inner edges of the loose sheets can be squared for neat position in the book pack to to indicate one of the 2 be held in the `mechanism when the clamp is applied.
It is apparent the structure disclosed is low in cost to manufacture. The general utility is also apparent. The structure is adapted for some advantages in its use which will now be mentioned.
The use of the new structure may be compared to the routine use of a board with a spring clip or clamp at the top edge to hold a pack of loose sheets. The type of binder being considered is one adapted for a random pack, that is a pack temporarily assembled, of orders or invoices or other papers to be examined and temporarily bound for examination. The loose papers or sheets to be examined are brought together in a pack S. It is pushed into neat form against the set of abutment ears I1`on plate I0, lying against plate 5, lying against cover 2. This is -done with nut I5 screwed up and spring I6 holding claw plate 9 open for admission of the pack. 'I'hen finger nut I5 is screwed down to clamp plate 9 on pack S against plate I0. The pack can be turned rapidly for easy examination. In the type of single clamp binder it is easier to examine the top iiat side of each sheet before it is turned back to curve over the binder mechanism, See Fig. 5. When the opposite sides of the sheets are to be examined, `it is easy to turn the whole pack over, as the change from the parts in the Fig. 5 relation to the parts in the Fig. 4 relation.
The new structure is low in cost and a more efficient help than prior art ways of handling random packs of loose sheets which are handled rapidly, to be bound only temporarily by -a single clamp along one edge.
Having disclosed the invention, the claims are:
1. Ln mechanism of the type for binding random packs of loose sheets, the combination of three long narrow hinge plates each having pintle receiving eyes adapted to lie along one hinge line and a common hinge pintle to make one piano type hinge construction, for the three plates, one plate adapted to rest flat against a support, another plate to lie fiat against the iirst one, spaced tabs struck up out of the material to extend atl right angles to the second plate and in one line parallel to the hinge line to serve as a positioning abutment means for the neat loose sheet back when laid on the second plate, the third plate having a claw shaped cross section to clamp the pack, a bolt with one end positioned against rotation on the second plate and adapted to pass loosely through a hole centrally provided in the third plate, a spring ycoiled around the bolt between the second and third plates, a nut on the outside end of the boli; to move the third plate down to clamping position on a pack resting on the second plate and in so doing compress said spring for automatic unclamping movement When the nut is turned up, said assembly of the second andthird plates `ibeing rotatable asa whole with said= plates "on said hinge construction 180 back and forth with respect to the rst plate.
2. The structure of claim 1 and a lexible fcover construction of two covers having ra hinge .p0r-v tion, said cover hinge portion .positioned parallel`V to and at one side of the hin-gepintlepi the-claim 1 plate assembly, the rst plate of said assembly being fastened to one of the covers at one side of the cover hinge portion.
