This invention relates to improvements in filling mixing pick and pick weft replenishing looms and it is the general object of the invention to provide such a loom with a multi-stack magazine controlled in such manner that it will deliver bobbins according to a predetermined sequence relatively to the stacks for successive replenishing operations of the loom thereby permitting full use of the bobbin storage capacity of the magazine.
In prior Patent No. 2,380,544 there is set forth a pick and pick filling mixing automatic loom having a multi-stack magazine provided with bobbin releasers and a selector therefor moved by a cam operating independently of transfer. The bobbins are drawn from the stacks with which the selector happens to be in register When the three shuttles of the loom need replenishment. This results in a selection of bobbins which so far as the order of drawing from the stacks is concerned is hit or miss, but satisfactory in many instances. In other instances, however, it is found that all the bobbins will be drawn from one stack while several bobbins still remain in the other stacks. When this happens the loom is stopped by the filling stop motion without being able to use all the bobbins in the magazine.
The actuating mechanism for the selector positioning cam shown in the aforesaid patent is operated by shifting shuttle boxes which give a comparatively slow advantageous feed movement to the pawl which operates the ratchet wheel connectedto the cam. It is an important object of the present invention to utilize this slow or low rate feed of the ratchet wheel in connection with control means for the pawl to move the selector in such manner as will draw bobbins uniformly from the several stacks of the magazine, thereby avoiding premature depletion of one stack.
The usual multi-stack stationary reserve bobbin magazine includes in its construction a shaft which is rocked from normal to transfer position when the magazine is set for a replenishing .operation. It is another object of the present invention to cause the shuttle boxes to give regularly recurring but normally idle working strokes to the feed pawl for the ratchet wheel, and move the pawl into operative position relatively to the ratchet wheel on transferring beats of the loom by means of a control derived from the aforesaid shaft when it moves to transfer position.
In the preferred form of the invention the feed pawl normally hangs in a low position below the ratchet wheel and is lifted to operating position when the aforesaid shaft moves to transfer position. In the modified form of the inventionthe pawl is held in high position above the ratchet wheel by a connection to the shaft during non-replenishing beats of the loom, but when replenishment occurs the connection descends and permits the pawl to fall into operating position.
The shuttle boxes start their shifting movements when the lay is substantially on bottom center and moving forwardly. The magazine will ordinarily be set for transfer at or prior to this time. As the lay reaches front center the magazine is reset and the aforesaid shaft returns to normal position, thereby losing its control of the pawl. The timing of the parts is such, however, that the boxes when shifting cause the pawl to engage one or another of the teeth of the ratchet wheel before the magazine is reset, and the pawl will remain in driving relation with respect to the ratchet wheel after resetting of the magazine.
In the modified form of the invention the pawl not only moves angularly around the ratchet wheel axis but also rises when having a working stroke. The connector from the shaft to the pawl is lifted when the magazine is reset at front center, but by this time the pawl will have risen to a sufficiently high position to prevent the connector from lifting it out of driving relation with the ratchet wheel, and the latter will continue to be moved by the pawl after completion of transfer and resetting of the magazine at front center.
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth.

Referring particularly to Fig. 1, a harness and shuttle box control mechanism K is shown at the left end of the loom and a multi-stack stationary magazine M at the right end. The lay L reciprocates in the usual manner and has right and left groups of shifting shuttle boxes RG and LG, respectively. There are two 'shuttle -boxes in each gang'and each gang shifts in a four-pick cycle so that it is up for two successive picks and then down for the next two successive picks.
The cycles of the two gangs are out of step with bis-attached to-a connection 48 flexible in part each other by one pick, and whenonegangtshlfts the other is at rest with respect to the lay. The
loom operates with three shuttleswnotshown which follow each other in rotationtand allrcarry1 weft of the same kind.
The pattern mechanism K is-built to efiect shifting of the shuttle boxes according tothe setates on a fixed stud 36 and has along high dwell 31, intermediate short dwells 38 and 39, and a long low dwell 40. The cam effects movement of the previousl described lever 28 to determine the position of the selector. The cam is fixed to a ratchet wheel having eight teeth described in detail hereinafter. A lock-wheel 43 and lock 44 yieldingly holdthe cam, ratchet wheeland selector in their several positions.

In carryin the preferred form of the invention into effect I mount a lever 50 loosely on stud 36 and attach the connection 48 to the lower end-of lever arm 5|. A spring 52 anchoredas at 53vnormally tends to turn the. level- 50 in a counterclockwise ldirectionas viewed/in Fig. 2 andrassists-in keeping the connection '48 taut.

Asithe connection 48..is drawn to the left as viewed-in Fig.2 every fourth" pick of the'loom itrocks lever 50' to move-pawl 55 to the left in a clockwisedirection, but the pawl normally traverses apath below the r'atchetwheel and out of engagement with it.
When the magazine is set for transfer, however, shaft l1 moves to its transfer positionpr'eferably priorto' 'the start of shift of gang LG and in doing so lifts theconnector 51 to raise the pawl'55 into operative relationship with respect tothe ratchet wheel 54. As lever 50 rocks due to shifting of the gang'LG the pawl will advance the ratchet wheel one-eighth. of a turn. In doing so it movesdownwardly and places the spring 59 under sometension, which, however, is not enough time. the pawl is still engagedwithone or another'of the teeth'of the ratchet wheel 54 and remains" engaged with the ratchet wheel; during continued rockingof lever 50 despitethe slacknessofc'onnector 51.

In the modified form of the invention the pawl and its ratchet remain more or less as set forth in the previously mentioned patent. A lever 65 similar to lever 56 is mounted on stud 36 and has an upright arm 66 attached to the connector 48. A spring 61 anchored as at 68 normally tends to turn lever 65 in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 6. The arm of lever 65 has a pawl II pivoted thereto as at 1-2 for cooperation with a ratchet wheel 13 similar to ratchet wheel 54 but having its teeth pointing in the opposite direction.
In this modified form of the invention control for the pawl is derived from the previously mentioned rod 2!. This control includes a head 15 held in vertically adjusted position on rod 2! by a set screw 16 and provided with a lift finger 17 which extends from the head to a position under pawl H. When the top shaft I? which controls rod 2| is in its normal position the latter will be up and the finger T! will therefore hold the pawl abovethe ratchet wheel 13 and cause it to traverse normally idle working strokes over the top of the ratchet wheel. When the magazine is set for transfer, however, rod 2| descends, thereby lowering finger 17 and permitting pawl H to fall into operative engagement with the ratchet wheel 13. As in the preferred form of the invention this last operation will occur when the loom is approximately at bottom center position, or slightly therebefore, and the next ensuing backward movement of pawl H due to shift of gang LG will rock the ratchet wheel 13 for oneeighth of a'turn in a counter-clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 6.
It will be understood that when the lay reaches front center position on a replenishing operation rod 2! will have been lifted to its normal high position due to return of shaft IT to its normal position. It will be apparent from Fig. 6, however, that when pawl H has an operative working stroke it is raised bodily with respect to the finger 1! and will have attained a suificiently high position at the time of front center to prevent unseating thereof relatively to ratchet wheel 13 by the upwardly moving finger l'i. On the return or idle stroke of the pawl it will move downwardly into engagement with finger H and the latter will hold up the free end of the pawl and cause it to miss the nearest ratchet tooth on its next working stroke.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided simple means to give the feed pawl slow gradual working strokes by connections actuated by shifting shuttle boxes, together with controls by which the pawl can operate on replenishing beats only of the loom. The positioning cam, the ratchet wheel, and the pawl may be considered as an actuating or positioning unit for the selector which makes regularly recurring attempts to change the position of the selector, these attempts normally being nullified due to the fact that the pawl is kept in a non-operative position by the magazine but becoming operative on replenishing beats of the loom. In the preferred form of the invention the pawl is below the ratchet wheel and has its idle strokes along the under side of the wheel. When the shaft l1 rocks to transfer position, however, the pawl is lifted into engagement with the ratchet wheel at a time which occurs sufficiently early to permit correctplacement of the pawl with respect to the tooth which it is intended to engage. In the modified form of the invention the pawl is normally held in high position and moves along a. path having an upward as well as rearward component as viewed in Fig. 2, and when shaft l1 rocks at transfer position the controller allows the pawl to fall into driving position with respect to the ratchet wheel. Thereafter as the pawl has its working stroke it also rises and when shaft I! returns to normal the pawl will have been risen suficiently high so that it is not unseated by the controller.
Having thus described my invention it will be seen that changes and modifications may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is:
1. In a weft replenishing loom having a reserve bobbin magazine provided with a plurality of bobbin releasers and a releaser selector movable to register with the releasers one at a time, the magazine having a part movable from normal to transfer position preparatory to a weft replenishing operation of the loom, a positioner for the selector movable from one position to another position thereof to cause the selector to change its registry with the releasers, shuttle boxes which shift in a. given direction when said part is in transfer position, actuator mechanism for the positioner operatively connected to the shuttle boxes and given a normally inoperative movement relatively to the positioner when said boxes shift in said given direction, and connections between said part and said actuator mechanism causing the latter when moving with said shuttle boxes to move the positioner from said one position to another position thereof.
2. In a weft replenishing loom having a reserve bobbin magazine provided with a plurality of bobbin releasers and a releaser selector movable to register with the releasers one at a time, the magazine having a part moving from normal to transfer position whenever the magazine is set for a replenishing operation, shifting shuttle boxes which have a shifting movement during the time the magazine is set for transfer, a positioner for the selector movable to change registry of the selector relatively to the releasers, actuator mechanism for the positioner operatively connected to said shuttle boxes and having regularly recurring movements simultaneous with shifting of the boxes but normally ineffective to move the positioner, and connections between said part and the actuator mechanism effective when said part is in transfer position to cause said actuator mechanism to move the positioner.
3. In a pick and pick filling mixing weft replenishing loom having a reserve bobbin magazine at one end thereof provided with a plurality of bobbin releasers and a selector movable into registry with the releasers one at a time, shuttle boxes at the opposite end of the loom normally shifting when a weft replenishing operation can occur, a positioner for the selector movable progressively to different positions to effect registry of the selector with the-releasers in a given sequence, actuator mechanism for the positioner operatively connected to and moving in time With said shuttle boxes and having movements which are normally idle with respect to the positioner when the shuttle boxes shift, and means effective on successive replenishing operations of the loom to cause said actuator mechanism to move said positioner progressively to said dilferent positions.

In.a pick andpickfillingsmixing :weft replenishing loom having. a reserve bobbinmagazine providedswitha plurality of bobbin releasers and aselector registerable with the releasers one at a time, a positioning cam movable vprogressively to effectregistry .of the selector with the releasers in a given sequence, aratchet wheel securedto and moving withsaid cam, shifting ishuttlexboxes having regularly recurringishiftingi movements certain of which occur during replenishing operations of the loom, a pawl for the ratchet operatively connected-to theboxes and having recurring working strokes when the shuttle boxes have said certain shifting: movements, said working strokes being normally inoperative'with respect to said ratchet wheel, and means operative incidenttoweft replenishing operations to move' saidpawl into operative relation with respect to the ratchet wheel prior to said certain shifts of said shuttle boxes occurring during replenishing operations to cause working strokes of the pawl to move said ratchet-wheel and'cam progressivelyto change registry of the selector relatively to said releasers insaid sequence.
6. In a pick and pick fillingm-ixing weft replenishing loom' having a reserve bobbin magazine provided with a shaft movable from normal to transfer position incident to avveft replenishing operation of theloom,lthe-magazinahaving a plurality of bobbin releasers and aselector-registerable withthe releasers-one at a time, a'positioning cam movable progressively to differentpositions to "effect registry of the selector with the releasers ina given sequence, a ratchet wheel moving with the.oam,.a.pawl for the ratchet wheel, shifting shuttle boxes having shifting. movements duringweft replenishing operations of the loom and operatively connected to the pawl and givingithe latter movements normally idle with respect tothe ratchet wheel whentheshuttle boxes have said shiftingmovements, and connections betweensaid shaft andspawl effectivewhen said shaftimoves to transfer position incident to replenishing operations to move said pawl-into working relationship with respect to'the ratchet wheel and causeimovement; of the latter and the cam progressivelvto said different. positions to effectlregistry of'the selector withthe releasers insaidsequence.

In a pick and pick filling mixing weft replenishing loom having a reserve bobbin magazine provided with a plurality of bobbin releasers and a selector registerable with said releasers one at a time, shuttle boxes having shifting movements which occur when replenishing operations of the loom can occur, a positioning cam for the selector below the shaft and movable progressively to different positions to cause the selector to register with said releasers one at a time in a given sequence, a ratchet wheel secured to and moving with said positioning cam, a pawl operatively connected to and having working strokes when the shuttle boxes have said shifting movements, and connections between the shaft and pawl normally causing said working strokes to be above and inoperative relatively to the ratchet wheel when the shaft is in normal position, said pawl tending to fall into operative position relatively to the ratchet wheel, and said connections effective when the shaft moves to transfer position on successive replenishing beats of the loom to allow the pawl to fall into operative position relatively to the ratchet wheel and enable the pawl to cause progressive movements of the ratchet wheel and positioning cam to effect registry of the selector with said releasers in said sequence.
12. In a pick and pick filling mixing weft replenishing loom operating with shuttles which arrive at transfer position every fourth .pick only of the loom and having also a multi-stack Weft replenishing mechanism provided with bobbin releasers and a selector registerable with the releasers one at a time, a positioner for the selector movable to change registr of the selector relatively to the releasers, an actuator for the positi vin Working strokes every fourth pick of the loom which are normally inoperative with respect to the positioner, and means operative on a Weft replenishing operation of the loom to relate the actuator cperatively with respect to the positioner to cause movement thereof to effect said change of registry of the selector relatively to the releasers.
13. In a pick and pick filling mixing weft replenishing m operating with shuttles which arrive at transfer position every fourth pick only of the loom and having also multi-stack weft replenishing mechanism provided with bobbin releasers and a selector registerable with the releasers one at a time, a positioner for the selector movable to change registry of the selector relatively to the releasers, an actuator for the positioner having at least one working stroke every four picks of the loom occurring on those picks on which replenishing operations can occur, said working strokes being normally inoperative with respect to the positioner, and means operative on a weft replenishing operation of the loom to cause the working stroke of the actuator then occurring to move the positioner to cause a change in registry of the selector relatively to the releasers.
14. In a pick and pick filling mixing weft replenishing loom operating with shuttles which arrive one at a time in a replenishing position every fourth pick only of the loom and having also a multi-stack weft replenishing mechanism provided with bobbin releasers and a selector registerable with the releasers one at a time, a positioner for the selector movable to change registry of the selector relatively to the releasers, an actuator having a working stroke normally inoperative relatively to the positioner each time a shuttle is in replenishing position, and means operative on a replenishing operation of the loom occurring when a shuttle is in replenishing position to cause the stroke of the actuator then occurring to move the positioner and thereby effect a change of registry of the selector relatively to the releasers.
