UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB KATZENBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ATTACHMENT FOR BUTTON-HOLE SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,254, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed December 10, 1880. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB KA'IZENBERG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Button-Hole-Making and Embroidering Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip- Tion.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buttonhole presser-foot to which the improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view, illustrating the use of the improvement. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the foot. Fig. 4 is a crosssection of a button-hole made with and of one made without the improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for button-hole and embroidery sewing-machines for use in laying cords along the edges of button-holes for the purpose of filling out or raising the stitches that surround the same, and thus producing more finished and durable work.
The invention consists in constructing a presser-shoe with apertures for receiving the cords and holding the same while a button- -hole is being stitched, as hereinafter described.
A represents an ordinary presser-shoe used in making button-holes, and which has teeth in its lower edges to engage with and keep the foot in place upon the work. The shoe A is pivoted to and carried by the presser arm or plate B in the ordinary manner. In the end of the shoe A are formed two holes, 0, to receive two cords, D, as shown in Fig. 2, which cords extend longitudinally through the shoe A along the opposite sides of the place where the button-hole is to be formed, and are held in place by the teeth at the other end of shoe 40 A. The cords are held taut by the weight of the balls or of the spools, upon which the said cords are wound and which hang from the end of the shoe. The button-hole is then worked in the ordinary manner, the stitches passing around one of the cords in forming one side of the button-hole and around the other cord in forming the other side of the button-hole.
In some cases instead of the cords D a narrow tape may be used, and the stitches formedaround the edges of the said tape, the buttonhole being cut through the tape and the material at the same time. In this case the apertures C are made in the form of a short slot, 0, as shown at one end of the shoe A.
I am aware that cord-guideshave been provided for use in forming button-holes, and that they have constituted attachments of presserfeet, as illustrated in Patent N 0. 225,523; and also, that sewing-machine prcsser-feet have been constructed withslits to serve as guides for use in stitching stay pieces or strips over uniting seams of boots or shoes. Such inventions I disclaim.
Cords or tapes of varying thickness may be employed, according as it is desired to raise or fill out the button-hole stitches more or less.
What I claim is-- The rectangular oblong presser-shoe A, for use in stitching button-holes, the same having apertures in its opposite transverse vertical end portions to receive and hold cords parallel alongside a button-hole, as specified.
