(01. 206-41) This invention relates to carrying cases for smokers pipes, and has for its objects to provide a case which will completely contain the pipe; which will allow the pipe to remain lighted a reasonable time while contained therein; which has no metal part in its construction; in which the elastic used to maintain it in closed position may be readily renewed; which is shaped so that when it is pulled from the pocket of the user, it will not catch on the pocket nor on any of the articles therein; which fits over and under the pipe bowl; which may be readily cleaned; which may be provided with a chain or cord to prevent its loss; which may be molded or carved; which may be made of wood or plastic;

which, while enclosing the pipe, leaves a suiiicient part of the bowl sides exposed to permit it to be firmly grasped by the fingers in inserting and removing the pipe from the case; which, while having a hinged action is not provided with any hinge; which is of strong construction, neat in appearance, durable in quality, inexpensive to make, and effectively fulfills its purpose.

I attain these and other objects by the devices and arrangements illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Fig. 1 is a plan of my improved pipe case; Fig, 2 is a vertical section of the upper part thereof; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the lower part thereof; Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a side elevation thereof, showing the pipe in broken lines, and showing the position of the parts when the pipe is being inserted therein or removed therefrom, also in broken lines.

Similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

My invention is constructed of two separate and unattached parts, held together normally by an elastic means, and held in proper hinged relation to each other by separable interlocked parts.

The upper member 6 is provided with a head I which is preferably stream-lined in shape, as seen in Fig. 1 to prevent its entanglement with the users pocket, or its contents, when it is being withdrawn therefrom; and with a stem 8 which is curved in section as seen in Fig. 4.

The under side of the head 1 is provided with a cavity, or inverted cup, 9 adapted to hold the top part of the pipe bowl, and having a flange, or lip, Ill forming such cavity. The head I is raised above the stem 8 to accommodate the shape of the particular pipe for which it is made.

A depression I4 is made in the rear end of the stem -8 adapted to receive the holding lug 15 of the lower member I3 to act therewith as a hinge about which the said lower member l3 may be swung in inserting or removing the pipe. A groove l6 extends around the outer surface of the stem 8 and is adapted to receive and hold the elastic ring ll, of rubber or other suitable material. A staple I8 is placed in the rear end of the stem 8 to hold a chain, or cord, 19 which may have a ring 20, or other means adapted to which surrounds both stem 8 and part 2|, fastening them together. The rear end of the upward therefrom and adapted to enter the depression M in the stem 8, to hold the member l3 in alinement and to act as a hinge between the parts 8 and I3,

The smoking pipe is inserted into the case by forcing the head 22 downward, against the action of the rubber ring [1; inserting the stem of the pipe into the groove 1 I, until the base of the pipe bowl passes over the flanged head 22 of the lower member l3, and the top of the pipe bowl passes under the flange I0 and into the inverted cup 9 formed therefor, when the member l3 closes under the action of the elastic ring I! and encloses the pipe completely within its structure, except that the sides of the pipe bowl are left exposed to enable the pipe to be firmly grasped by the users fingers to remove it from the case by the reversal of the above-described action.

It is, of course, understood that the particular size and shape of the case may be varied to accommodate the particular design of the pipe and that slight changes may be made in the above described case without departing from the spirit of my invention, as outlined in the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

The stem 81s provided with an open groove ll 56 1, A smokers pipe case adapted to receive a smokers pipe having a stem and a bowl; comprising an upper member including a groove in its under side adapted to cover the stem of a pipe, and a head extending upward from one end of said upper member and having an inverted cup adapted to receive the top of the pipe bowl; an under member adapted to close the groove for the pipe stem, and having a flanged head extending upward from the end of said lower member and coaxial with said head of the upper member and adapted to enclose the lower end of the pipe bowl; and an elastic ring encircling the upper and lower members to hold them together.

2. A pipe case as set forth in claim 1, wherein the inverted cup of the head of the upper member, and the head of the under memberare sep- 4 arated by a substantial distance, thereby per mitting the pipe bowl to be grasped while the case is still closed.
