This invention relates to improvements in adat store fronts, wherein the letters or characters are of large size and are individually mounted in' spacedrelaticn to the building wall, is becoming increasingly popular because of the eifectiveness of the sign and the attractive and aesthetic appearance obtained. Thus, the individual charac: ters stand out in relief, and the use of a frame connecting the characters is eliminated.
It is essential, however, for the proper appearance of such signs, that the characters thereof be.
properly aligned, that is, that their upper and lower edges be at the same level. Also, the outer faces of the characters should lie in acommon plane, and each character should be positioned in the same angular relation with respect to the vertical. This presents a difflcult problem in many cases because of irregularities of the building. A slight irregularity in a building wall may cause a bracket secured thereto to extend at an angle to the perpendicular with respect to the over-all plane of the building wall, and tends to magnify. the irregularity as it effects the position 01' the sign character and the spacing thereof from like characters, in a sign of this type. Therefore, one
of the objects of this invention is to provide a bracket which will compensate for such irregularities.
i A further object is to provide a bracket of this character which is simple and sturdy in construction, which is easy to mount, and which is easy to adjust.
A further object is to provide a bracket of this character which is adjustable in length and in any direction transversely thereof.
A further object is to provide a multiple-part bracket wherein the supported part or parts are adjustable longitudinally, bodily transversely and rotatively with respect to the supporting part thereof.

Referring to the drawing. which illustrates the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral l0 designates the bracket which may be used to mount a rigid sign character I2 formed of any suitable material, upon a building (not shown) in proper relation to like characters to form a desired sign. Any number of brackets may be used to mount each character l2 as required to effect a solid mounting which will support the weight of the character, which will properly position the character, and which will withstand wind pressure and other forces acting upon the character l2.
The bracket Ill is preferably formed of three parts, namely, a supporting or anchoring part I4, an elongated arm I6 carried by part [4, and a head mounted on the arm.
Thesupporting part l4 of the bracket is substantially of L-shape and has a base 20 and a flange 22 extending perpendicularly upwardly from said base. Apertures 24 are formed in flange 22 to receive securing means for mounting the part I4 upon a support, for example, a building wall. Apertures 26 are formed in base 2|] to likewise receive securing means in case the part [4 is to be secured upon the horizontal surface of a support. An elongated slot 28 is formed in the base 20 adjacent to the front edge thereof and parallel to the flange 22. A series of teeth 30 and 32 are formed integrally with the base and project upwardly therefrom at each side of the slot 28. The teeth 30, 32 are aligned and their crests are elongated and extend transverse of the slot 28.
The arm I6 preferably constitutes a, solid bar of circular cross section which is bent intermediate its ends at 34, whereby the opposite end portions thereof are substantially straight and parallel, but slightly offset. One end portion of arm 16 bears upon the teeth 3032 of base 20, seated between adjacent teeth and thereby positioned transverse of slot 28. An eyebolt has its eye 36 encircling the arm and its shank 38 extending through slot 28. A nut 40 threaded on bolt shank 3B and acting against washers 42, serves to draw the arm l6 into firm frictional engagement with teeth 30-42 whereby the arm is clamped to and supported by the base 20.
The head l8 has a bore 44 therethrough to snugly and slidably fit upon the opposite or outer end portion of the arm I6. A boss 46 on the head has a threaded bore transverse of and communicating with bore 44, and a set screw 48 is threaded therein to bear against the arm IS. The head t8 has a flange 50 at its outer end, transverse of bore 44, and is provided with apertures 52 to receive securing means by which the character 12 is secured to the head.
In use, the bracket parts l4 for the brackets requiredto mount the various characters I2 which make up the desired sign are secured to the building or other support as accurately as possible.
The brackets are then assembled and the characters are secured to heads l'8, either before or after the, brackets are assembled. When the Sign is l us r ct d it ca b amined fer ali nmen position and n ral ap a ance, and changes can then be made in the adjustment of the individual characters as required to compensate for anyirregularities which detract from the appearance desired. Thus, if the characters are not in flush or coplanar relation, the overall length of the brackets can be adjusted as necessary relative to each other to secure the tdesired-flushrm port and including a plate portion having an lation, This is accomplished easily by releasing either the set screw 48 or-the nut 40 to permit the longitudinal adjustment at the respective ends of the arms, or by effecting the adjustment at both ends, if that is required. Note that vertical tilting is compensated by adjusting the lengths of the upper brackets relative to the lower brackets, or vice versa. Likewise, lateral tilting is corrected by adjusting the length of the brackets at one side relative to those at the other side, it bein apparent that characters of -substantial width in which lateral tilting would be noticeable will generally be mounted by three or more brackets paced apart both vertically and horizontally.
If the upper and lower edges of the characters are out of the desired alignment, the misaligned characters can be raised or lowered by rotating the arms 16 so that the oii-set 34 therein throws the characters to the level desired. Likewise, if the characters are positioned in different attitudes or are inclined with respect to each other, this can be corrected either-by rotating the arms I5 or by bodily shifting the point of connection of arm iii with base =20 as accommodated by the slot 2-3, or by making compensatl-ng adjustments of both'arm rotation and position of arm connection with base 20.
It will be apparent from the foregoing explanation of the use of the device that it ispossible to make any adjustment required to achieve the proper spacing and positioning of the characters of a sign by simple adjustments and without reshaping or reforming the bracket. -Consequent'ly, accuracy of character position can be achieved quick'ly, -thereby reducing the cost and expense of installing the sign and avoiding the possibility of damage thereto which might result if the brackets were bent or reshaped while in place and while supporting a character. At the same time, the bracket has the advantages of simplicity of construction, ease of assembly and erection, and adequate strength for its intended purpose.
While the invention has been iiiustrated and described as a sign hanger, its use is not limited thereto and it may be used for any other purpose for which it is found to be suitable. Likewise, while the construction herein described and illustrated is preferred, other embodiments are contemplated within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
