c. w. slMs 2,438,828 STENCI L ASSEMBLY WITH REMOVABLE ACKING AND FAC ING SHEET March 30, 1948.1
Filed Jan. 16, 1946 INVENTOR. CLAIR w. SIMS BY l ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 30, 1948 s'rENcm Assn MBLY WITH REMOVABLE BACKING AND FACING SHEETS clair w. sims, rasa'aen'a, Calif. substituted. foivapplicatio'n Serial No. 541,104,
June 19, 1944. This application January 16, 1946, Serial No.` 641,423
V 6 claims. (c1. 10ft-4127) My inventionrelates to stencils for use inapplying marks, such as indicia, letters, numerals, designs, and etc., to surfaces, such stencils comprising a sheet having openings therein through which the paint or other marking substance is applied to the material to be marked.
Itis an object of the present invention to provide a stencil package which includes the rstencil proper having adhesive substance applied to certain of its surfaces and having a cooperative arrangement of cover sheet for preserving the stencil prior to the use thereof and making it possible to use the stencil with minimum effort.
It is an object of the invention to provide a stencil having a stencil sheet provided with an opening and a ller piece disposed within Athe opening without connection to the main body of the stencil sheet; Y s
A further object is to provide a stencil package having means for holding a stencil sheet and ller piece in cooperative relation and in` such a manner that these parts may be` conveniently affixed to the surface which is to be stencilled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a stencil package having meansmfor facilitating the alignment of the stencil upon the surface which is to be stencilled This application is a substitute for application Serial `No. 541,104, led June 19, 1944, now abandoned.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be brought out in the following part of the specification. Y
Referring to the drawing which is for illustrativepurposes only, l p
Fig. 1 is a face viewvshowing a stenciljembodying my invention affixed to a surface which is to be stencilled.
Fig. 2 is a, face view of a stencil package.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken as indicated by the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a back view of the stencil package.
Fig. 5 is a view showing the manner in which the cut-out portions of the stencil are removed with the front cover sheet.
In Fig. 1 I show a Wall Ill having a surface II to which marks are to be applied by use of a stencil, and a stencil I2 having openings I3 and I4 defining marks which in the present illustration consist of the letter A and a cipher. The stencil I2 comprises a main body I5 and filler pieces I5 and I1 which are disposed within the openings I3 and I4 so as to mask portions of the surface I I and leave exposed only the stripes comprising the marks which are to appear upon the surface II. The body I5 has a strip or tab 2 I8 along its upper edge, this tab being separated from the body I5 by a linear score I9 permitting bending of the tab I8 relatively to the body I5. The stencil body I5 and the filler pieces I6 and I1 are securedto the surface II of `the wall I0 by adhesive substance which covers the rear faces of `these parts I5, I6, and I1.
The stencil I2, as shown in Fig. 1, is a part of the stencil package which is shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. This stencil package 20 includes the stencil body I5 with its tab I8, the llerpiec I5 within the opening I3 and a cut-out area.2I which fills the space `within the opening I3 not occupiedby the ller piece IE. Accordingly, the
lao
cut-out 2| consists of the letter A. The :stencil package `20 also includes a cut-out 22 in the form f a letter O or zero,` which occupies the, space within the` opening I4 not occupied by the filler` pice I1. The .reariace of the stencil body I5, as shown in Fig. 3, has thereon a coating of adhesive substance 23 and onthe rear face of each insert I5 `andnI'l there is a coating of adhesive substance` 23u., 0n the front face of each cut-out 21| and 22 there is a layer of adhesive substance 24,/ Across the entire front face of the stencil body l5 there is a` front cover sheet 25 which is1 strongly connected by the layers of adhesive 24` tothe front faces of the cut-outs 2I|`and` 22. The front cover sheet is only lightly adhesively secured to the front` face of the stencil body I5 and the front faces of the filler pieces IIS and I1. Inthe-practice of` the invention the front cover sheet may be not at all connected to the filler pieces I6 and I1 but merely extend t'hereover, andthe front cover sheet 25 may be connected to the front face of the stencil body I5 at spaced points or adjacent the periphery by application of an adhesive which will permit ready separation of the front cover sheet 25 from the stencil body I5. l
Across the rear face of the tab I8 there is a rear cover strip 2B and across the remaining rear surface of the stencil body I5 there is a rear cover sheet 21. The strip 26 and the rear cover sheet 21 are preferably made of a paper treated so as to resist the adhesive material of the layers 23 and 23a, so that a strong bond of this adhesive material with the members 26 and 21 will not be formed. Accordingly, it is possible to readily strip the pieces 26 and 21 respectively from the tab I8 and the central body I5. If the adhesive layers 23 and 23a are of rubbery character, the strip 26 and the layer 21 may be made from paper impregnated with paraiiin. It will be noted that there is no coherence between the rear cover sheet 21 and the cut-outs 2| and 22, for the reason that these cut-outs 2| and 22 have adhesive on the front faces only.
In the use of the stencil Package, the following procedure may be followed. First, the strip 26 is removed so as to expose the adhesive on the tab I8. With reference to a guide line or other guide means, the tab is then stuck onto the surface Il, and when the operator is satisfied that the tab is properly aligned, the rear cover sheet 21 is then removed and the remaining part of the assembly is pressed tightly against the surface II to bring the adhesive layers 23 and 23a into engagement therewith, thereby sticking the stencil body I5 and the filler pieces I6 and IIV on the surface Il. Then, as shown in Fig. 5', the front cover sheet is removed from the stencil body I5, carrying therewith the cut-outs 2| and 22, since they are strongly cemented to the front cover sheet 25. This leaves the stencil body I5 and the ller pieces IB and I7 in place on the surface II of the wall I0 in the manner shown. It will be understood that a stencil may have one or more characters as desired.
I claim as my invention:
1. A stencil package of the character described, comprising: a sheet forming a stencil body having an opening therein, a cut-out, and a filler piece disposed within said opening, the rear faces of said body and said filler piece having an adhesive substance thereon; a tab projecting from one edge of said body; a rear cover sheet removably disposedA so as to cover the rear faces of said body, said filler piece and said cut-out; a tab cover piece removably disposed on the rear face of said tab; and a front cover sheet removably secured to the front lface of said stencil, said front cover sheet being so connected to said cutout that removal of said front cover sheet from said stencil body will remove said cut-out from said opening of said stencil body,
2. A stencil package of the character described, comprising: a sheet forming a stencil body having an opening therein, a cut-out, and a filler piece disposed within said opening, the rear faces of said body and said ller piece having an adhesive substance thereon; a rea` cover sheet removably disposed so as to cover the rear faces of said body, said ller piece and said cut-out; and a front cover sheet removably secured to the front face of said stencil, said front cover sheet being so connected to said cut-out that removal of said front cover sheet from said stencil body will remove said cut-out from said opening of said stencil body.
