PROTECTED LABEL Filed July 6, 1953 19 TTOE/YE Y5 Patented July 6, 1954 UNITED STATE ATENT OFFICE PROTECTED LABEL David B. Harris, San Gabriel, Calif.
Application July 6, 1953, Serial No. 366,179
I 3 Claims. 1
My invention relates to labels and is particu larly directed to an improved form of label having a protective transparent shield or cover. The ins vention also relates to large size labels or signs.
Commercial labels having adhesive coatings on the back side are well-known and transparent shields or covers for such labels have been heretofore employed to protect the label surface from damage. Protected labels have been heretofore produced by simply coating the label with varnish or lacquer. To date protected labels have been costly to install on a quantity basis and have required excessive amounts of labor to apply them to packages or other goods. Waterproofing has been diflicult to accomplish.
It is an important object of my invention to provide as a single entity a label which ma be rapidly afiixed in place and which may be lettered while so aflixed and which may then be protected by means of an integral shield or cover which is transparent, and which preferably forms a watertight joint encompassing the label. Other and more detailed objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view showing a preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the two backing strips in the process of removal.
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the label in position on a container and showing the backing strip from the transparent cover sheet in process of removal.
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the protected label in position, afiixed to the container.
Figure 5 is an exploded view, showing the various parts of the protected label assembly.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken substantially on lines 6-5 as shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings:
The label assembly generally designated it includes a label sheet II which is adapted to carry inclicia I2 on its front surface It.
The transparent protective cover sheet I4 is preferably of the same general shape as the label sheet II but of a larger size. The cover sheet I4 is connected by integral tabs I5 with the anchor piece l5a, all formed of the same material. The upper surface It of the transparent cover sheet I4, tabs I5 and anchor piece Ita are all coated with pressure sensitive adhesive material II. A backing strip I3 normally covers this material I'I until the label assembly is ready for use.
The back side It of the label sheet II is also covered with adhesive material 20. If the material 2B is of the pressure sensitive type a second backing strip 2| is employed to cover it. If the material 29 is of the type which is moistened before use the backing strip 2! may be omitted. In any event, the adhesive material 23 of the label sheet II is placed in contact. with the adhesive material I I on the anchor piece Ilia, thereby firmly holding the adjacent edges of the sheets I I and I4 in parallel relationship.
The label sheet I l and its backing strip 2i may be conveniently cut as a unit from commercially available double-layer sheet material furnished on a roll. Similarly, the transparent cover sheet It and its backing strip I8 may convenientl be cut as a unit from another roll of double -layer sheet material. The manner of assembly is best shown in Figures 2 and 6.
In operation, the backing strip 2i, if any, is removed or the adhesive material 29 is moistened. The label assembly is then placed on a mounting surface 22 with the adhesive material 2a in contact with said surface. This serves to hold the label steady while any additional indicia are added to the front surface I3. The backing strip I8 is then removed from the transparent cover sheet I4 and tabs I5. The latter cover sheet It is then folded downward about the scored lines 23 from the position shown in Figure 3 to the position shown in Figure 4. In the latter position, the transparent cover sheet It covers the tabs and completely encompasses the label sheet I I, with the pressure sensitive adhesive material II in contact with the mounting surface 22 and with the front face of the label sheet H. The label sheet I I is thus effectively protected by means of the transparent cover sheet I 4 which extends beyond it in every direction and which is held by adhesive contact to the mounting surface 22.
Having fully described my invention, it is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the details herein set forth, but my invention is of the full scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A protected label assembly or the like, com-- prising; a label sheet adapted to receive indicia on the front side thereof and having a pressure sensitive adhesive coating covering the back side thereof, a transparent protective cover sheet of larger size than said label sheet and having a pressure sensitive adhesive coating covering the front side thereof, spaced tabs on an edge of one of said sheets, said tabs being adhered to the adhesive coating on the other of said sheets to join the two sheets along adjacent edges thereof,
so that the adhesive coated surfaces of said sheets face in opposite directions when the assembly is open and the sheets lie in the same plane, and removable backing strips each cover ing one of said adhesive coatings, said cover sheet being movable about said tabs to overlie said label sheet and extend beyond the edges thereof with the adhesive coating on said cover sheet in contact with the front side of the label sheet.
2. A protected label assembly or the like, comprising; a label sheet adapted to receive indicia on the front side thereof and having an adhesive coating covering the back side thereof, a transparent protective cover sheet of larger size than said label sheet and having a pressure sensitive adhesive coating covering the front side thereof, spaced tabs on an edge of one of said sheets, said tabs being adhered to the adhesive coating on the other of said sheets to join the two sheets along adjacent edges thereof, so that the adhesive coated surfaces of said sheets face in opposite directions when the assembly is open and the sheets lie in the same plane, and a removable backing strip covering the adhesive coating on said cover sheet, said cover sheet being movable about said tabs to overlie said label sheet and extend beyond the edges thereof with the adhesive coating on said cover sheet in contact with the front side of the label sheet.
3. A protected label assembly or the like, comprising; a label sheet adapted to receive indicia on the front side thereof and having a pressure sensitive adhesive coating covering the back side thereof, a transparent protective cover sheet of larger size than said label sheet and'having a pressure sensitive adhesive coating covering the front side thereof, an edge portion of one of said sheets overlapping an edge portion of the other of said sheets, so that said adhesive coatings face and contact one another along the overlap to join said sheets, the adhesive coatings on said sheets facing in opposite directions when the assembly is open and the sheets lie in the same plane, and removable backing strips each covering one of said adhesive coatings, said cover sheet being movable about said overlap to overlie said label sheet and extend beyond the edges thereof with the adhesive coating on said cover sheet in contact with the front side of the label sheet.
