Application .B 21, 1944, Serial No. 519,l07
(Cl. 23d-141)v mils invention relates to improvements in in l terengaging impeller type blower or pump.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a blower or pump well adapted for air and other uids which is of substantial capacity and adapted to deliver fluid under substantial pressure.
Second, to provide a structure having these advantages in which no packings for the impellers are required otherV than such as may be desirable for the impeller shafts.
Third, to provide a structure having these advantages in which the impellers may be' readily machined and assembled in coacting abutment forming relation.
Further objects pertaining to details and economies of the invention will denltely appear from the description to follow. The invention is' defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of the invention is clearly illustratedin the accom-` panying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view partially in section of a pump or blower embodying the features of the invention, certain of the parts being shown conventionally and only such parts being illustrated as are deemed desirable for an underzanding of a practical embodiment of the inven- Fig. 2 is a fragmentary View partially in section showing the impellers in another position in their cycle of movement from that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view partially in section corresponding to that of Figs. 1 and 2, showing the impellers in another position in their cycle of movement.
Fig. 4 i's a fragmentary view partially in section showing a slightly modified form or embodiment of the invention.
` Fig. 5 is a fragmentary View partially in section showing the impellers at another position in their cycle of movement.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view partially in section showing the impellers in still another position in their cycle of movement.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 1 the casing designated generally by the numeral I is provided with an inlet 2 and with an outlet 3. This casing is providedwith or comprises lobes 4, 5 'and 6 having cylindrically curved side walls. the fir-st and second lobes t and 5 being arranged in side by side relation and the -third lobe S being arranged in opposed relation. The curves of the walls of the first and second'lobes intersect at 'l Vwhile the 'curve of the third lobe and the second lobe intersect at 8. The lobe t is open to the inlet 2 as is also the lobe 5.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 3 the outlet 3 .is formed in the end wall 9 of the third lobe E and this lobe has a, recess IB in its peripheral wall adjacent the outlet and in communication therewith when the impellers are in position so that the compressed fluid is being discharged.
I provide first, second and third impellers designated II, I2 and I 3, respectively. It will be understood that the terms first, second and third lobes and first," second and third impellers are used largely as a matter of convenience in description and designation of parts. The shafts I4, I5 and I8 of the impellers II, I2 and I3 are driven synchronously, the shafts It and I5 being driven in the same direction of rotation and the shaft ES in the opposite direction of rotation. The driving connections are Iconventionally illustrated, the driving gear il being in mesh with the gears I8 and I9 of the shafts It and I5, while the gear 20 of the shaft I Ii is in mesh with the gear I9. The shafts are driven at the same speed.
The impellers or rotors I I and I2 are of general elliptical shape having curved sides 2| terminating in relatively pointed ends 22 which constitute the ends of the vanes of the impellers. These ends are, however, preferably curved in a small arc. y
The impeller I3 has oppositely disposed lobes 23 having curved outer ends 24, these lobes constituting the vanes of this impeller I3. Recesses 25 are formed between the lobes or the curved surfaces of the lobes. 'I'he impellers II and I2 are so proportioned and their curvature is such that they are at all times in coacting abutment forming relation. The curved ends of the lobes 23 of the impeller I3 are of such dimensions and curvature and the impeller I2 is of such dimensions and curvature-that the impellers I2 and I3 are at substantially all times in coacting abutment forming relation. The recesses 25 are such as to receive the ends of the impeller I2.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the outlet 26 opens into the second lobe 5 and f in coacting abutment relation with the side recesses of the third impeller receiving the ends of the second impeller.
2. In a blower, the combination of a casing having an inlet and-an outlet and comprising first and second lobes disposed side by side with the ilrstlobe opening to said inlet and a third tions oi their cycle or movement. In Fig. 3 the impellers are shown with the ilrst impeller in air entrapping position and the second impeller in air compressing position, and in Pig. 1 in a iurthe air compressing and delivery position. In Pig. 2 the impeller Il is shown'in position to deliver its charge into the second lobe, where it is picked up by the second impeller l2 and compressed and delivered to the outletl as described.
' The impeller Il traps air from the inlet when in approximately the position shown in Fig. 2. This trapped air is also conveyed to the delivery. Inasmuch as the space for the trapped air is constantly decreased through each cycle of movement from the initial trapping of the air, a substantial compression of the conilned or trapped air results. The embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 3 has a somewhat greater capacity for air compression thanthe embodiment shown in Fig. 4, although the degree of compression depends largely on the head on which the air is delivered.
I have indicated by arrows the direction of lobe dispod in opposed relation to the nrst and second lobes and opening to the inlet, said lobes having end walls and cylindrically curved side walls, vthe curved side walls oi the first and second lobes intersecting `each other, the curve of the side wall of theI third lobe intersecting the curve or the side wall-of the second lobe, the outlet being in an end wall' of the third lobe, ilrst and second impellers disposed within and coacting with the first and second lobes respectively and synchronously driven tor rotation in the same direction, said first and second impellers having symmetrically curved sides and terminating in substantially pointed ends and being in coacting abutment relation to each other, and a third impeller disposed withinv and coacting with the third lobe and synchronously driven with said ilrst and second impellers in the opposite direction relative to the direction of rotation of said first and second impellers, said third impeller having opposed lobes with curved ends and side recesses between the lobes, said second and third impellers being in coacting abutment relation with the side recesses of the third impeller rerotation of the impellers, the iirst and second impellers ll and l2 being rotated in clockwise direction while the third impeller I3 is rotated in counterclockwise direction. The flow of fluid is indicated by dotted lines.
I have illustrated and described the invention in practical embodiments thereof.l I have not attempted to illustrate various structural details in arrangement of driving gears and the like as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
